Against the Storm — Cornerstone & Blueprint Drafting Mechanics Guide
Against the Storm is a roguelite city-builder where each settlement is a short, high-density run inside a longer cycle. Two drafting systems shape almost every decision you make: cornerstones (persistent bonuses you select at intervals) and blueprints (building recipes you draft as your reputation climbs). Picking well is the single largest lever between a clean victory and a stalled settlement at Prestige difficulty.
This guide covers how both systems work, what changes across biomes, and how to rank your picks at higher Prestige levels where margins tighten.
What it covers: Cornerstone and blueprint drafting ranked — mechanics, biome variance, and Prestige-level pick ordering. Why it matters: Drafting is the single largest lever between a clean victory and a stalled settlement. Who should pick this: Players pushing Prestige difficulty or stuck at a plateau.
How cornerstone drafting works
Cornerstones are special modifiers chosen from a limited draft. The core flow:
- Opening draft. At the start of each settlement you are offered a set of cornerstones and pick one. This sets your initial economic direction.
- Milestone drafts. As you gain reputation, additional cornerstone drafts trigger at fixed reputation thresholds. Each milestone offers another small pool and you pick one.
- Empowered cornerstones. Certain cornerstones can be “empowered” when specific conditions are met (biome, species composition, or prior cornerstone ownership), amplifying their effect. The game surfaces empowerment eligibility in the draft UI.
Cornerstones fall into broad functional buckets:
- Production multipliers — bonus output from a specific chain (e.g., planks, cloth, bricks).
- Trade and economy — improved trade routes, extra amber, better packaging.
- Species and housing — bonuses tied to species composition or housing satisfaction.
- Hostility and storm mitigation — reduced hostility, faster storm preparation, easier resolve management.
- Service and needs — buffs to service buildings or need fulfillment.
A cornerstone that aligns with your biome’s strengths and your species composition outperforms a generically strong pick that fights the map.
How blueprint drafting works
Blueprints unlock production buildings beyond your starting set. Drafting triggers at reputation thresholds during the settlement:
- Each draft offers a small number of blueprints; you pick one to add to your construction menu.
- Blueprints cover crafting chains (planks, fabric, bricks, tools), food processing, services, and intermediate goods.
- What you draft determines which complex needs you can satisfy. If no blueprint in your pool covers a required service good, you must trade for it or absorb the resolve penalty.
Blueprint picks are path-dependent. Drafting a lumber mill line early unlocks plank-based construction; drafting a cloth line opens trade goods and higher-tier clothing needs. The cost of a wrong early pick compounds because later drafts are fewer and more constrained.
Draft cadence and reputation thresholds
Reputation gain drives both cornerstone and blueprint drafts. As a rule of thumb, early reputation milestones come quickly (completing orders, fulfilling needs), while later milestones slow down as requirements climb. Plan your first two blueprint drafts before the first storm — those buildings define your survival floor.
Cornerstone tier logic
Rather than a fixed tier list that rots with every patch, here is the reasoning framework used to rank cornerstones, then concrete picks per biome.
Universal S-tier reasoning
A cornerstone is top-tier when it:
- Solves a bottleneck you cannot otherwise remove (e.g., a service good your biome can’t produce).
- Provides a multiplicative bonus to a chain you are already running.
- Reduces hostity or storm pressure in a way that frees wood and labor.
- Enables empowerment reliably on this map.
Universal pick-order principles
- Need coverage before production. A cornerstone that lets you satisfy an otherwise impossible need beats a +20% production bonus.
- Trade-enabling cornerstones scale. Extra amber and better packaging compound across a long settlement.
- Hostility reduction is difficulty-multiplied. At Prestige 10+, every hostility point matters more; mitigation cornerstones climb in value.
- Species-conditional picks need commitment. If a cornerstone rewards a species you didn’t bring or can’t house, skip it.
Biome-by-biome drafting priorities
Biomes differ in resource availability, soil types, and default hostility curves. Draft priorities shift accordingly.
Royal Woodlands
The baseline biome. Strong wood output, moderate soil, balanced needs.
- Cornerstones: Prioritize plank and cloth multipliers; wood is abundant so plank chains are cheap to feed. Hostility mitigation is useful but not mandatory at low Prestige.
- Blueprints: Secure a plank chain early, then a service building (temple or equivalent) before the first storm. Food processing second unless your starting biome has a rich food node.
Scarlet Orchard
High-value trade goods, thinner wood, fruit-oriented economy.
- Cornerstones: Trade and packaging bonuses rank higher here than in Woodlands because the biome exports efficiently. Cloth and luxury-good multipliers pay off.
- Blueprints: Prioritize the chain that turns local fruit into trade goods; trade income substitutes for the wood you lack.
Marshlands
Difficult terrain, limited building spots, hostile environment.
- Cornerstones: Hostility reduction and storm mitigation climb to S-tier. Production cornerstones that don’t require large buildable area are safer.
- Blueprints: Compact production chains; avoid blueprints that need sprawling logistics you can’t place. Secure food early — Marshlands food nodes are lean.
Cursed Royal Woodlands
Hostile variant with elevated storm pressure and penalties.
- Cornerstones: Mitigation first, production second. Any cornerstone that lowers hostility or eases resolve pressure is premium.
- Blueprints: Same logic as Royal Woodlands but weight service buildings heavier — resolve management is the run-killer here.
Coral Forest
A later-added biome with its own resource profile.
- Cornerstones: Lean on cornerstones that exploit its unique nodes; confirm current node list against the latest patch notes before committing a strategy.
- Blueprints: Draft to cover the biome’s signature needs first; general-purpose picks come after.
The exact biome roster and node availability has shifted across patches. Verify current biome behavior against the in-game codex or recent patch notes before treating any biome guide as definitive.
Blueprint pick-order by difficulty
Prestige difficulty (the ascending difficulty ladder above the base Veteran level) changes draft pressure in two ways: fewer choices per draft and tighter hostility/reputation requirements.
Low Prestige (1–5)
- Flexibility is cheap. You can afford a production-focused first draft and fix gaps later.
- Recommended first picks: Plank chain → service building → food processing.
- Trade drafts are a luxury, not a necessity.
Mid Prestige (6–12)
- Need coverage tightens. Prioritize a blueprint that covers a service need your biome can’t self-supply.
- Trade becomes structural. A blueprint that produces a trade good lets you import what you can’t make.
- Hostility-aware drafting: If your cornerstone path is mitigation-light, draft a building that reduces resolve pressure (e.g., a service building covering a common need).
High Prestige (13–20)
- Every draft is load-bearing. The first blueprint pick often determines whether the run is viable.
- Pick order: Service coverage → trade good → plank chain → food. This inverts the low-Prestige order because unmet needs cost more than slow construction.
- Empowerment planning: Draft blueprints that set up cornerstone empowerment you’ve already committed to; don’t waste a draft on a building your cornerstones don’t reward.
Cornerstone tier table (general, Prestige 10+ reference)
The table below summarizes reasoning; exact rankings shift with biome and species composition.
| Tier | Cornerstone type | Why | When to pick |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | Hostility/storm mitigation | Frees wood and labor; difficulty-multiplied value | Cursed/Marshlands, high Prestige |
| S | Unmet-need enabler | Removes a bottleneck nothing else can | When a required need is uncovered |
| A | Trade and packaging bonuses | Compounding amber across the run | Scarlet Orchard, trade-heavy builds |
| A | Empowered production multiplier | Multiplicative on a running chain | When empowerment is reliable |
| B | Flat production bonus | Good but replaceable by blueprints | Early game, flexible maps |
| B | Species-conditional bonus | Strong if committed, dead if not | Only with matching species/housing |
| C | Niche utility | Situational, map-dependent | Rarely first pick |
Common drafting mistakes
- Chasing production before coverage. A +25% plank cornerstone won’t save a run where a service need is unmet.
- Ignoring empowerment. Passing on a cornerstone you can empower for a marginally stronger non-empowered pick leaves value on the table.
- Drafting blueprints for buildings you can’t feed. A building with no input chain is dead weight.
- Treating trade as optional at high Prestige. Trade is the pressure valve when self-sufficiency isn’t possible.
- Locking species composition too early. Some cornerstone picks assume a species mix; confirm housing before committing.
Glossary
- Cornerstone — A persistent modifier drafted at settlement start and reputation milestones.
- Blueprint — A building recipe added to your construction menu via draft.
- Empowerment — A condition-based upgrade to a cornerstone’s effect.
- Reputation — The settlement progress currency; thresholds trigger drafts.
- Hostility — The opposing pressure that rises and peaks during storms; high hostility punishes resolve.
- Prestige — The difficulty ladder above Veteran, scaling penalties and tightening drafts.
- Resolve — Species satisfaction; low resolve causes population loss.
- Amber — Trade currency used to import goods you can’t produce.
Difficulty scaling summary
At higher Prestige, draft pools shrink and requirements climb, so the cost of a wrong pick rises faster than the benefit of a right one. The strategic shift is from optimization (low Prestige: make the best pick) to risk management (high Prestige: avoid the pick that kills the run). That framing matters more than any individual tier ranking, which is why this guide leads with reasoning rather than a fixed list.
