The Elder Scrolls Online: Gold Road added a system that no previous chapter had: the ability to build your own skill. Scribing, introduced with the June 2024 chapter, lets you take a base Grimoire, slot three Scripts into it, and produce a finished ability that lives on your bar like any other skill. It is a combat-focused crafting system rather than a gear one, and it opened eleven new skills to per-character customization at launch. This guide walks through how the system is unlocked, how a Scribed skill is assembled, which Scripts matter, and a starter Grimoire build you can copy.
What changed
Scribing arrived with Gold Road and, as of July 10, 2025, the base system was made free to unlock through the in-game Crown Store — you no longer need to own the chapter to access Scribing, though the Grimoire lineup and quest content still originate from Gold Road. Per the official Elder Scrolls Online guide, the system gives every character the ability to “customize 11 new skills to suit your playstyle.”
The unlock path is straightforward:
- Pick up the free Scribing bundle under Upgrades in the Crown Store.
- Your character must be level 30, or have access to the Champion System (which waives the level requirement).
- Start the quest “The Second Era of Scribing” from the Scribing collectible in your Collections menu, then speak to Adept Irnard Rirnil near the Mages Guild in Skingrad.
- Completing the tutorial grants access to the Scribing Altar in the Scholarium beneath Eyevea, plus your first Grimoire and the Scripts to assemble it.
- Further access to Grimoires and the full system unlocks by completing “The Wing of the Indrik” on one character; alts only need to finish the tutorial quest to use everything your account has unlocked.
Crucially, Scribing quest progress is per-character, but the unlocks are account-wide. Grimoires and Scripts purchased on one character are available to every other character on the account at a discounted vendor price.
How it works
The three-part assembly
Every Scribed skill is built from three Script slots applied to a single Grimoire, sealed with Luminous Ink. The official guide lays out the roles:
- Focus Script — defines the main function of the skill. This is what changes the skill’s damage type, whether it targets enemies or allies, and — importantly — the skill’s final name, its resource type (Magicka or Stamina), and its resource cost. Picking the Magical Focus Script on the Wield Soul Grimoire renames the finished skill to “Magical Soul” and makes it deal Magical Damage.
- Signature Script — enhances the Focus effect, triggers a unique interaction with an existing mechanic, or adds a secondary attribute. The Damage Over Time Signature, for instance, adds 9,000 Magic Damage over 10 seconds to the target.
- Affix Script — adds a buff or debuff drawn from the Major/Minor buff system. The Breach Affix applies Major Breach, reducing the target’s Physical and Spell Resistance for 10 seconds.
A few hard rules from the guide shape every build: you must choose one of each Script type; not all Scripts are compatible with all Grimoires; and not all compatible Scripts are compatible with each other. Experimentation is part of the system.
Grimoires and Scripts as permanent unlocks
Grimoires are bought for gold from Chronicler Firandil in the Scholarium after completing “The Wing of the Indrik.” Each Grimoire requires a related achievement — the Bow Grimoire “Vault” needs the “Bow Apprentice” achievement, for example. Once bought on one character, alts purchase the same Grimoire at a discount. Grimoires are consumed once to permanently unlock the skill on that character.
Scripts are looted from the world, bought from vendors, or earned as quest rewards. Consuming a Script permanently unlocks its effect at the Altar for that character. Three Script categories gate behind three “Wings” of the Scholarium questline:
- Wing of the Gryphon unlocks Focus Scripts from daily solo-exploration quests (the DLC-zone daily quests), daily Mages Guild quests, and PvP Rewards for the Worthy.
- Wing of the Dragon unlocks Signature Scripts from daily World Boss quests, daily Cyrodiil quests, and daily Fighters Guild quests.
- Wing of the Netch unlocks Affix Scripts from daily World Event quests, daily Imperial City quests, and daily Undaunted quests.
After each Wing, the matching Script type also appears on a rotating weekly stock at Chronicler Firandil and Filer Ool in the Infinite Archive. The first daily quest of each category each day carries a guaranteed Script drop.
Luminous Ink — the consumable
Luminous Ink is the only thing consumed when Scribing. Crafting a brand-new skill from three empty slots costs three Ink; changing one Script on an existing skill costs one. After “The Wing of the Indrik,” Luminous Ink rarely drops from defeated enemies; after “The Wing of the Netch,” it rarely drops from harvesting crafting materials. Because Ink is the scarce input, the system rewards getting a build right the first time and only re-Scribing when you have a clear reason to change a slot.
The Class Mastery Signature Script
After “The Wing of the Dragon,” a special Signature Script — the Class Mastery Signature — becomes available through Class Script Scraps. You collect 50 scraps, automatically consumed, to unlock the script for the current character. Scraps come from normal and veteran Trials (including weekly coffers and leaderboards), normal and veteran Arenas, the Infinite Archive, daily dungeon reward boxes, Battleground reward boxes, Master Writs, Cyrodiil Elder Scroll capture rewards, and becoming Emperor. Once unlocked on one character, alts buy it from Chronicler Firandil directly.
Build path
A starter Grimoire build: Wield Soul as Magical Soul
The official support page uses Wield Soul as its teaching example, and it is the cleanest starter build because every slot choice is documented. Wield Soul’s base behavior launches a concentrated blast of Soul Magic at a single target.
- Grimoire: Wield Soul (single-target soul magic blast).
- Focus Script: Magical — converts the blast to Magical Damage, sets the resource to Magicka, and renames the skill Magical Soul.
- Signature Script: Damage Over Time — adds 9,000 Magic Damage over 10 seconds to the target, turning a burst skill into a burst-plus-pressure tool.
- Affix Script: Breach — applies Major Breach for 10 seconds, cutting the target’s Physical and Spell Resistance and amplifying the rest of your rotation.
- Cost: 3 Luminous Ink to Scribe the first time; 1 Ink per slot changed afterward.
This build is a self-contained single-target damage skill that also debuffs the enemy for your other abilities, which is why it shows up in DPS and PvP guides alike. Slot it on your bar from the Skills menu — it appears under its parent skill line (for example, Vault lives under the Bow skill line).
Which Scripts matter
If you are choosing where to invest first, the official guidance is consistent:
- Focus Scripts decide your resource type and damage type, so they are the most build-defining. Pick a Focus that matches your resource pool (Magicka for magicka builds, Stamina for stamina builds) before worrying about Signatures.
- Signature Scripts are where the system’s customization depth lives. The Class Mastery Signature is the long-term goal for any serious build because it ties the Scribed skill to your class kit.
- Affix Scripts are the cheapest lever to pull for group content. Major Breach (single-target Grimoires) and Minor buffs (AoE Grimoires) are the default picks because debuff uptime compounds with the rest of your group.
Note the rule the guide emphasizes: single-target Grimoires have access to Major buffs and debuffs, while Area-of-Effect Grimoires have access to Minor ones, because AoE skills can apply to many targets at once.
What it means
Scribing is the first time ESO has let players author a skill rather than pick one. The system’s design — permanent Grimoire and Script unlocks, only Luminous Ink as a consumable, account-wide unlocks behind a single character’s quest progress — keeps the cost of experimentation low once you are in, while the Wing-gated Script drops give daily-quest grinders a steady reason to keep playing. For build crafters, the eleven launch Grimoires and the three-slot assembly open combinations that did not exist before Gold Road; for everyone else, a single well-chosen Scribed skill can fill a gap a class kit could not. As of the 2025 free-unlock change, the only barrier to entry is the level-30 or Champion-System gate and the tutorial quest, which makes now the right time to start collecting Scripts even on alts.
