Eternal Return’s Season 12 has run through two headline updates: the August engine-and-systems rebuild that opened the “Sailing” season, and the October character drop that added Seres. This guide walks through what each patch actually changed, the numbers Nimble Neuron published for the new fighter, and how the season has landed with players.

What this covers: the Seres kit and how to unlock her, the Ranked lockout that ran to October 6, the Season 12 systems that arrived in August — the Rest rework, Chronosphere safe zones and the Unity 6 engine move — plus the October 1 balance pass and the player numbers behind the season.

What Patch 12.5 and Season 12 shipped

Nimble Neuron took the servers offline for an estimated four hours on October 1, 2026, from 2 AM UTC, to apply Patch 12.5. Season 12 itself opened earlier: Patch 12.0 Part 1 landed on August 6, 2026, after a six-hour maintenance that also began at 2 AM UTC, and it carried the season theme, the ER Pass and the engine migration.

Patch 12.5October 1, 2026New character Seres, Tennis Club Priya skin, store events, balance pass

The two updates are different in kind. Patch 12.5 is a character patch with a long balance list attached; Patch 12.0 Part 1 is the structural one, and most of what a returning player will notice about Season 12 — resting, safe zones, the late-game rules on the map — comes from August, not October.

Seres: the new two-handed sword fighter

Seres is a two-handed sword wielder whose kit reads closer to a support than to a duelist. Her character line is a promise rather than a threat: “I will become the sword that protects you.”

Her passive and four actives are built around a shared theme of shielding and damage-sharing:

ELoyal GuardianLeaps to a chosen ally and guards them for 3 seconds, taking 12/13/14/15/16% (+1% additional HP) of the damage before reduction, and heals Seres for 25% of the damage the guarded ally deals; cooldown 12/11.5/11/10.5/10 seconds
ROath to the LightUp to 2.5 seconds unstoppable while raising a shield that absorbs 15/30/45 (+5% Skill Amp, +1.5% max HP) for Seres and nearby allies, stacking every 0.25 seconds; cooldown 85/75/65 seconds

The through-line is that almost nothing in the kit is pure damage. Rush pays out only if the shield survives its window, and Oath to the Light is a team shield first and a personal escape second.

How to unlock Seres — and the Ranked lockout

Seres cost 9,900 A-Coin for two weeks after launch, and Nimble Neuron kept her out of Ranked matches until October 6, giving the ladder five days without her. A Seres Emote Bundle ran from October 1 to October 15, priced at 480 NP down from 800 NP, and bundled four Seres emotes with a one-day XP Boost. Tennis Club Priya joined as a Rare skin in the same patch.

Seres and Lucia have a dedicated pairing

Loyal Guardian is where Seres stops being a generic protective support. When the guarded ally is Lucia, her leap range grows by 1.5 metres, the damage she absorbs rises to 16/17/18/19/20% (+1% additional HP before reduction), and her self-heal rises from 25% to 30% of the ally’s damage. Nimble Neuron also added unique voice lines for the two when they help each other.

There is a safety valve as well: Seres will not step in front of an ally if her own HP is below 20%, and casting Loyal Guardian on herself instead grants 20% movement speed for 1.5 seconds.

Season 12 “Sailing” and the Unity 6 engine move

The Season 12 notes describe the engine change in a single line: “We updated the game to the Unity 6 engine to improve overall stability and performance.” Around that line, the patch details graphics-quality improvements, frame-rate work aimed at fights with multiple objectives, a redesigned loading structure, and custom graphics options covering image quality and shadow processing.

The season rollover was scheduled tightly. Season 11’s ranked season ended on August 5, 2026 at 23:59 UTC, a one-week preseason followed, and Season 12 ranked began on August 13 after the 12.1 maintenance. Ranked history from the preseason received a soft reset at the start of Season 12.

Season Pack: Sailing went on sale at 13,780 NP, was discounted to 5,800 NP — about 57% off — from August 6 to August 20, then to 6,400 NP (about 53% off) through the end of the season. Its contents included the Wave Slasher Xuelin epic skin, the two Season 12 characters Lucia and Seres, six season skins and 100 Sailing Tokens.

The reworked Rest system

Resting stopped being a between-fights-only action. In Season 12 it can be started at any time, including in combat, and it now charges through three stages that each pay out as they complete:

StageCast durationRecovery on completion
Stage 13 seconds15% of all HP
Stage 23 seconds15% of all HP
Stage 34 seconds50% of all HP

Cancelling forfeits only the stage in progress. Pressing the Rest hotkey again, issuing a movement command, taking damage, or being forced out by a crowd-control effect will all cancel it, and a one-second cooldown applies when it is cancelled. One quality-of-life detail: a movement command given within 0.25 seconds of a stage finishing is honoured after the recovery completes, so the heal is not wasted.

Chronospheres replace Temporary Safe Zones

The other big systems change is the Temporary Safe Zone, which swapped area control for a moving Chronosphere. The designers’ stated reason is consistency: the old temporary zones and the final safe zone ran on different rules, and unifying them removes a learning curve while giving contested teams somewhere to skirmish.

The published timeline runs: a safe zone spawns in a 30-metre radius for 5 seconds; a first shrink narrows it to a 10-metre radius over 20 seconds; a 10-second standby shows the next movement target; the Chronosphere moves; a second shrink narrows it to 5 metres over 15 seconds; it holds that 5-metre radius for 40 seconds; a third shrink closes it to zero over 5 seconds; then the winner is determined.

Two rules matter more than the timeline. Characters still outside the safe zone are instantly eliminated the moment it activates, and once a zone is live, non-targeted movement skills can no longer slip through its barrier walls. Targeted movement skills can still attempt the crossing, but doing so eliminates the character.

The rest of the Season 12 toolkit

Several smaller systems came with Patch 12.0 Part 1 and its follow-ups:

SystemDetail
Restricted Area ReopeningLumi sells a reopening order for 20 Credits, available from Day 3 to Day 5 and limited to one purchase per team per phase; buyers gain CCTV vision of the target area, and first-spawn mutant wild animals in a reopened area get a 10% higher spawn chance
Test Subject RecordsA new Archive tab of character lore, unlocked by completing Tutorial 1 and watching every Main Episode Ep. 1 scenario, with Analysis Progress capped at 100%
Late-game phase timingDay 7 extended from 150 to 200 seconds; Night 7 from 50 to 60 seconds
Portable Safe ZoneDuration cut from 7 to 5 seconds and cost raised from 40 to 50 Gadget Energy; the CNOT Gate gadget was removed
Starting itemOmurice 3 was removed and Watermelon 3 added, with 660 HP Regen
Rapid ReconstructionRevival HP raised from 50% to 60%, and the elimination-prevention penalty’s revival time rose from 3 to 5 seconds

Patch 12.5 added its own social and interface features: a User Block list capped at 50 users, an NP Purchase Stamp reward track, a Kiosk priority-material guide in the Special Store, and floating-text display settings. Matchmaking was also tightened on Asia 1, where the highest-tier queue is now restricted to Mythril and 8,600 RP and above.

The October 1 balance pass

Patch 12.5 shipped a wide balance sweep, mixing targeted nerfs to high-win-rate characters with buffs to the ones underperforming. The table below collects a sample; the notes list every ratio.

CharacterSkill / statChange
NickyPure Rage Uppercut!! (R)Damage 100/180/260 → 80/155/230 (+35% Skill Amp)
LukePressure Washer (R)Mark damage attack-power ratio 13% → 15%
MagnusHeavy Strike (E)Wall-collision damage gains +30%→+40% Extra Attack Power, +30%→+35% Skill Amp, +7%→+8% target max HP
BlairBase Defense47 → 50
BihyungLet’s Have a Blast! (R)150/300/450 → 120/270/420 (+170% Extra Attack Power)
CharlotteDefense per level2.9 → 2.6
CraverShowdown! (R)150/235/320 → 130/205/280 (+70% Skill Amp)
FenrirRending Claws (Q)HP recovery 40/65/90/115/140 → 50/80/110/140/170 (+60% Attack Power)
HyunwooStomping Foot (Q)Early damage 50/100/150/200/250 → 90/130/170/210/250; cooldown 9/8/7/6/5s → 7/6.5/6/5.5/5s

Read the rationale behind the table and the direction is consistent: Nimble Neuron cut characters it described as over-performing at higher tiers and lifted the ones it described as underperforming. Charlotte “has maintained an excessively high win rate at higher tiers,” the notes say, so both her Arcana mastery scaling and her defense per level came down. Luke, by contrast, “has been showing somewhat low average damage,” so his R mark damage went up.

That is a familiar seasonal lever, and if you like comparing how different games handle it, the Diablo IV seasonal class rankings are worth reading alongside it. Eternal Return’s version is more granular — single mastery-percentage nudges such as Camilo’s Rapier mastery dropping from 1.3% to 1.2% per level, or Cathy’s Dual Swords skill amplification from 4.6% to 4.5% — but the goal is the same.

What the player numbers say

Steam Charts marks the Season 12 launch month as the year’s strongest on Steam so far. August 2026 averaged 10,560.50 concurrent players, a 37.61% gain over July, with a monthly peak of 27,157. September 2026 then averaged 9,476.80, down 10.26%, and the trailing 30-day window at the time of writing averaged 9,353.42 with a peak of 24,945.

PeriodAvg. playersPeak
August 202610,560.5027,157
September 20269,476.8026,776
Trailing 30 days (at time of writing)9,353.4224,945

The game’s all-time Steam peak remains 52,288, set in December 2020 early in its free-to-play run. The August spike lines up with the Season 12 launch and the Unity 6 update; the September pullback is the usual post-launch settling, and the October character release is the next thing likely to move the line.

Whether that loop is for you depends on what you want from an endgame. Eternal Return is a last-player-standing battle royale with a ranked ladder, but its newest kits lean heavily on team utility, and the PvE-versus-PvP endgame comparison is a useful mirror if you are weighing a test-subject battle royale against a co-op raid schedule.
