Guild Wars 2’s fifth expansion, Janthir Wilds, didn’t ship new elite specializations. What it shipped was arguably more structurally important: a relic system that replaced the sixth rune-slot bonus with a single, build-defining effect, and a spear weapon opened to every profession in the game. Together, those two changes did more to shift the build meta than a new spec line would have, because they touch every existing elite specialization at once.
This guide is mechanics-first. It pairs representative relics with named elite specs, rates the synergy, and tells you where each pairing actually earns its slot — open-world, fractals (T4 + CMs), or raids/strikes. Where exact numbers would require patch-note verification, I say so.
What it covers: Relic-and-spec pairings rated by synergy across open-world, fractals, and raids — plus the spear’s role. Why it matters: Janthir’s relic system replaced a passive rune bonus with a build-defining effect touching every spec at once. Who should pick this: GW2 players reworking builds after the fifth expansion.
How the relic system changed build identity
Before Janthir Wilds, your sixth rune bonus was a passive stat stick with a conditional proc. The relic system decoupled the build-defining effect from the stat budget: you now choose a relic for what it does, then tune your stats through your armor runes (which were trimmed to five-slot sets) and your gear.
The practical effect: a relic is closer to a third trait line than a rune. Many of them key off specific triggers — using a healing skill, applying chill, dodging, using an elite skill, or spending initiative/energy. That means relic selection is gated by your rotation, not just your stat line. A relic that procs on dodge looks great on paper and does nothing on a static DPS rotation where you never dodge on cooldown.
A short list of widely-used relics and their trigger hooks (exact damage coefficients change per balance patch, treat as directional):
- Relic of the Fireworks — procs an AoE burst when you use a healing skill. Strong on healers and on DPS that heal frequently.
- Relic of the Aristocracy — power-oriented, rewards sustained uptime. Common on power DPS.
- Relic of the Chronomancer — wells/clone synergies, alacrity-adjacent.
- Relic of the Deadeye — initiative spend / mark interactions.
- Relic of the Frigid / Relic of the Peering Rata — chill and condition stacks.
- Relic of the Thief / Relic of the Zaki — niche, trigger-dependent picks.
The point is not the list — it’s the rule: pick the relic whose trigger you can satisfy on cooldown in the content you actually play. A relic that demands dodge-weaving is a raid relic, not a strike relic where you may freeze for mechanics.
The spear as a fifth weapon for every profession
The spear is the expansion’s other system-level lever. ArenaNet gave all 9 professions a spear, and the implementations are genuinely distinct — a Guardian spear is a mid-range holy-projectile kit, an Elementalist spear cycles attunements, a Necromancer spear leans into conditions, a Thief spear is an initiative-spender, and so on. This is not a reskinned greatsword.
Two things make the spear matter for build identity:
- It fills gaps elite specs had. Several specs historically struggled for a viable ranged option or a viable power option; the spear often slots into that exact hole.
- It competes with established meta weapons. Where the spear beats the incumbent (e.g., longbow on a power Guardian build, or pistol on a condi Engineer), it does so because of relic synergy — the spear’s skill 2/3/5 sequences trigger relic effects at a favorable cadence.
Relic × elite specialization synergy matrix
This table rates representative pairings across the three content tiers. S = the relic is core to the spec’s current meta; A = strong, swappable; B = niche or off-meta. Treat ratings as a snapshot — GW2 balance patches move these regularly.
| Elite Spec | Relic | Open-World | Fractal (T4/CM) | Raid/Strike | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Willbender (Guardian) | Fireworks | A | A | S | Frequent healing-skill use in the flow trigger; burst lines up with judges |
| Bladesworn (Warrior) | Aristocracy | S | A | A | Sustain power uptime; gunblade flow keeps procs live |
| Catalyst (Elementalist) | Chronomancer | A | S | S | Jade-sphere + well-ish synergies, alacrity-friendly |
| Mechanist (Engineer) | Peering Rata | A | S | S | Condition cadence matches mech pet + grenade loop |
| Specter (Thief) | Thief | B | A | S | Shadow magic / stealth trigger lines up with rotation |
| Harbinger (Necromancer) | Zaki | A | S | S | Condi burst via elixir+cannie scaling |
| Untamed (Ranger) | Frigid | A | A | B | Chill application synergizes with unleashed mode |
| Vindicator (Revenant) | Fireworks | S | A | A | Dodges + healing proc align with alliance energy spend |
| Virtuoso (Mesmer) | Aristocracy | A | S | S | Blades + power sustain; clean on static targets |
| Scourge (Necromancer) | Zaki | A | S | S | Torment/burn stacking rewards condi relic triggers |
| Berserker (Warrior) | Fireworks | A | B | A | Primal-burst windows line up with heal-skill procs |
Notes: “Fireworks” shorthand refers to the heal-skill-trigger relic family; exact relic names and coefficients shift per patch. The raid/strike S ratings reward reliability on a static or predictable target — fractals move more, so burst-relic builds that need setup sometimes drop a tier there.
Tier list — relic value by content type
Ranked by how often the relic actually fires and how much of your DPS it represents, which is the only honest metric.
Open-world (events, metas, bounties)
- Relic of the Fireworks — most builds heal themselves constantly in open-world; the proc is almost always live.
- Relic of the Aristocracy — events last long enough for sustained uptime to pay off.
- Relic of the Frigid — chill on trash-heavy metas stacks fast.
- Relic of the Thief — stealth-reliant roaming builds, niche but clean.
Fractals (T4 + CMs)
- Relic of the Zaki — condi burst clears T4 trash and scales into CM boss windows.
- Relic of the Chronomancer — alacrity support builds anchor fractal comps.
- Relic of the Peering Rata — condition uptime on short fights.
- Relic of the Aristocracy — power DPS on static-ish CM targets.
Raids & strikes
- Relic of the Fireworks — heal-trigger burst windows align with phase breaks.
- Relic of the Aristocracy — long fights reward sustained power.
- Relic of the Chronomancer — support alacrity is table stakes.
- Relic of the Zaki — condi on burn/torment-stacking specs.
Build order — converting a pre-Janthir Wilds build
Most players aren’t starting fresh; they’re migrating a 2023-era build. Here’s a precise order to avoid wasting gold.
- Audit your old rune set. Your six-slot rune is now five-slot + a relic. Identify which effect you were actually getting from slot 6 — that’s the relic you should trial first.
- Pick the relic by trigger, not by stat. Re-read your rotation and count how many times per minute you dodge, use a healing skill, apply chill, or spend an elite. Match the relic to the most-frequent trigger.
- Re-gear stats if the relic freed a budget. Some relics removed the need to over-invest in a stat (e.g., crit chance from runes); you can swap a trinket toward power or precision accordingly.
- Test the spear only after the relic is settled. The spear competes with a known-good weapon; swap it in once your relic is stable so you isolate variables.
- Golem-bench, then live-bench. Hit the Lion’s Arch aerodrome golem for a baseline, then run three fractal T4s and one strike. If your golem DPS is up but your live DPS is down, your relic trigger isn’t firing in actual content — that’s the signal to switch relics, not the weapon.
Where the spear actually wins
Not every profession benefits from the spear, and pretending otherwise wastes gold. Based on community consensus:
- Clear wins: Guardian (power ranged option that didn’t exist cleanly before), Elementalist (attunement-flow spear for several specs), Engineer (a viable condi melee/ranged hybrid on some kits).
- Marginal: Warrior and Ranger — strong on paper, often edged by incumbent weapons in optimal comps.
- Skip for now: Mesmer virtuoso spear is playable but rarely optimal over the incumbent; same for some Revenant builds.
The honest summary: the spear is a tool to fix a hole, not a universal upgrade. If your elite spec already had a clean power-ranged or condi-melee option, the spear may not beat it even with relic synergy.
What this expansion actually did to the build game
Two takeaways for anyone returning after End of Dragons or Secrets of the Obscure:
- Relics lowered the floor, not the ceiling. A correctly-picked relic can carry a mediocre build; a wrongly-picked relic can kneecap a great one. The skill check is trigger literacy — knowing your own rotation’s trigger density.
- The spear broadened the bench. It didn’t replace the meta; it added options to specs that were short on them. The strongest builds in Janthir Wilds are still mostly pre-existing elite specs, now tuned with a relic that finally fires on cooldown.
If you’re investing gold, prioritize relic flexibility over weapon experimentation. Owning three relics for different content types buys you more practical DPS than chasing the spear on a profession where it’s marginal.
