Nerub-ar Palace — Opening Boss Mechanics & Assignment Guide
The War Within’s first raid, Nerub-ar Palace, opened with eight bosses across a linear progression path. For prog teams, the opening three encounters — Ulgrax the Devourer, The Bloodbound Horror, and Sikran, Captain of the Sureki Vanguard — set the mechanical tone for the instance: heavy personal-soak requirements, add-control checkpoints, and positional discipline that punishes sloppy raid placement.
This guide breaks down each fight’s ability rotation, soak assignment logic, and positioning. Numbers reflect Normal/Heroic tuning as widely documented on community guides; verify exact values against your difficulty and current patch notes, as Blizzard adjusts tuning between seasons.
What it covers: The opening three Nerub-ar Palace fights — ability rotations, soak logic, and positioning assignments. Why it matters: The first three bosses set the instance’s tone: personal soaks, add control, and placement discipline. Who should pick this: Prog teams entering the raid week one.
Ulgrax the Devourer — Boss 1
Ulgrax is a single-phase encounter that cycles through a fixed ability rotation while periodically requiring the raid to use environmental props (webbed carcasses) to interrupt a lethal channel. It is a mechanics-and-positioning check, not a throughput check.
Ability Rotation (approximate)
Ulgrax cycles the following core abilities in roughly this order, repeating:
- Tenderizing Jaws — tanks eat a heavy physical hit and a stacking debuff; swap after the debuff is applied.
- Hungering Belch — a conal breath toward the current tank’s position; both tanks and melee must orient the boss away from the raid.
- ToxicBile — periodic raid-wide AoE pulses requiring moderate healing; not soakable, just heal-through.
- Grasping Eruption — multiple ground swirlies spawn under random players; each player dodges their own.
- WebBomb — targeted projectiles that create web zones; avoid standing in impact areas.
- Volatile Weaver — large swirling ground effects; pre-position the raid to one side of the room so these spawn predictably.
At intervals, Ulgrax casts Devour — a channel that, if not interrupted by throwing a webbed carcass into the boss, kills a player. This is the fight’s hard mechanic.
Soak & Assignment Logic
- Tank swap: Off-tank taunts after 2 stacks of Tenderizing Jaws. Communicate the swap call before 3 stacks lands.
- Carcass duty: Assign 2–3 mobile players (Hunters, Rogues, Evokers) to grab webbed carcasses from the room’s edges and throw them at Ulgrax during Devour. Pre-position these players near carcass spawn points before the cast begins — the window is short.
- Swirlies (Grasping Eruption): No assigned soaks; each player dodges individually. Spread to prevent overlap.
- Healer cooldowns: Line up raid cooldowns with Toxic Bile pulses and after Devour windows, when raid damage spikes.

The Bloodbound Horror — Boss 2
A two-entity fight: the Bloodbound Horror (main boss) and the Faceless Manifestation (add). The encounter alternates between an “organic” phase (Horror active) and an “astral” phase (Manifestation active), with each entity casting independently on a timer.
Phase Structure
| Phase | Active Entity | Key Mechanics |
|---|---|---|
| Organic | Bloodbound Horror | Spreading Hemorrhage, Gruesome Disgorge, Flesh Eruption |
| Astral | Faceless Manifestation | Mind Flay, Manifest Nightmares, Psychic Burst |
| Both (overlap) | Both | Enrage timers force simultaneous handling |
Key Abilities & Assignments
Spreading Hemorrhage (Organic): A debuff applied to several players that, on expiry, drops a pool of blood. Assigned players must run to a designated dump zone (a corner) to drop pools away from the raid. Assign by group: Group 1 → northwest corner, Group 2 → northeast, etc. Stagger expiry timing so the healers aren’t overwhelmed.
Gruesome Disgorge (Organic): Frontal cone from the Horror. The active tank faces the boss away; melee dodge to the boss’s side or rear.
Manifest Nightmares (Astral): The Manifestation targets players with nightmares that must be soaked by nearby allies to split damage. Assign a “soak buddy” system — pair each ranged player with a neighbor. Unsoaked nightmares deal heavy damage to the targeted player.
Mind Flay (Astral): Beam on a random player; break line of sight or simply move apart. Assign interrupters to chain interrupts if the add channels repeatedly.
Phase swap management: When the active entity submerges and the other surfaces, the raid repositions. Pre-call the swap: “Astral up — collapse to center; Horror up — spread to dump zones.”

Sikran, Captain of the Sureki Vanguard — Boss 3
Sikran is a throughput-and-execution check with a strict personal-responsibility layer. The fight is single-phase but escalates as the boss gains energy and unleashes a room-wide sequence at full energy.
Ability Rotation
- Sureki Slash — tank combo; swap on-call. Heavy physical, applies a bleed.
- Shatter Defenses — reduces a target’s armor; the next Sureki Slash must go to a different tank or the debuffed tank dies.
- Exposed Vulnerability — after Shatter Defenses, the boss gains a window where it takes bonus damage. Line up DPS cooldowns here.
- Phase Lattice — several players get a debuff and, after a short delay, fire a beam toward their facing direction. Turn to face a safe wall or empty space before expiry.
- Cosmic Shards / Shardshard. A separate copy of a game world running on its own server; players on one shard don't share the world with another. Fall — ground-targeted AoE markers; dodge individually.
- Decimate (energy cast): At full energy, Sikran unleashes a room-spanning series of beams or slashes. The raid must be pre-positioned in safe lanes to survive.
Assignment Logic
- Tank swap: Strict two-tank swap on Sureki Slash, especially after Shatter Defenses lands. Off-tank taunts immediately when the debuff is applied to the current tank.
- DPS burst window: Hold major cooldowns for Exposed Vulnerability. This is the only meaningful damage-amplification window in the fight.
- Phase Lattice: This is the fight’s killer. Assign no fixed soaks — instead, every debuffed player independently rotates to face the nearest outer wall. Pre-mark the room’s cardinal directions so players know where “out” is.
- Decimate lanes: The safe-lane pattern is deterministic. Study the sequence in logs or a video before prog; assign each player a lane number. Moving to your lane before the cast is mandatory — there is no time once it starts.

Between Decimates, collapse to center behind the boss for melee uptime, then re-spread to lanes ~5 seconds before the next energy cast.
Cross-Fight Assignment Principles
Across all three opening bosses, the assignment patterns repeat. Lock these down on prog:
Soak Assignment Template
| Mechanic Type | Assignment Method | Failure Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Personal debuff dump | Group-numbered to corners | Pools in raid area |
| Split soak (nightmares) | Soak-buddy pairs | Unsoaked one-shot |
| Frontal cone | Tank-facing discipline | Melee clipped |
| Deterministic beams | Lane/number assignment | Wrong lane death |
| Ground swirlies | Individual dodge | Overlap from clumping |
Cooldown Planning
- Healer external cooldowns go on tanks during armor-reduction windows (Shatter Defenses, Tenderizing Jaws at high stacks).
- Raid healing cooldowns align with periodic AoE pulses (Toxic Bile) and post-soak damage spikes.
- DPS cooldowns wait for damage-amplification windows (Exposed Vulnerability on Sikran) rather than blowing on pull.
Communication Cadence
Assign one raid leader call per major event, not a running commentary:
- “Swap” — tank taunt
- “Dump northwest” — debuff movement
- “Lanes” — Decimate pre-position
- “Throw” — carcass interrupt on Ulgrax
Over-calling drowns the calls that actually matter.
Preparation Checklist for Prog Teams
- Pull logs of guilds ahead of you on the same difficulty — confirm the ability rotation and tuning numbers for your patch.
- Mark the room — cardinal-direction markers on the ground for Phase Lattice and Decimate lane reference.
- Pre-assign carcass throwers for Ulgrax before the first pull.
- Define dump zones and soak zones for Bloodbound Horror and mark them with flares.
- Dry-run the tank swap on a target dummy with voice calls before pulling Sikran.
- Review the Decimate lane pattern in a video at 0.25× speed so every player knows which lane is theirs.
The opening three bosses are execution gates, not gear gates. Teams that clean up positioning and assignment discipline clear them in an evening; teams that wing the soaks will stall regardless of item level.
