7 Days to Die has pushed V3.4.0 to its experimental branch, and the headline feature is a search bar with category filters for backpacks and containers — an inventory change aimed squarely at the moment when a horde is closing in and you cannot find the item you need.
What changed: The V3.4.0 experimental build adds inventory search and filters, and lets players recover lost drones through traders. Why it matters: Inventory management is the friction point that scales with playtime — the longer a run goes, the more items compete for the same slots. Who should care: Long-run players with full backpacks, and anyone who has lost a drone to terrain.
What is in the build
| Feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| Search bar | Type an item name to find it in a backpack or container |
| Category filters | Filter by category instead of scanning the grid |
| Drone recovery | Ask a trader to recover a stuck or missing drone |
| Branch | latest_experimental |
The search applies to containers as well as the player’s backpack, which is the more useful half. Base storage in 7 Days to Die becomes a wall of near-identical icons by mid-game, and filtering it by category is a direct reduction in the time spent not playing.
Drone recovery addresses a different frustration. Drones that get stuck or go missing have previously been a loss with no in-game remedy; routing recovery through a trader gives the player a path back to the item without an admin command.
How to get on the build
The changelog spells out the opt-in: right-click the game in Steam, open Properties, go to the Game Versions & Betas tab, and select latest_experimental from the dropdown. The build then downloads like any other branch change.
That path matters because experimental builds in 7 Days to Die routinely break saves and mods. The changelog lists known issues rather than presenting the build as stable, which is the honest framing for a branch that exists to be tested.
The known issues
Two are listed. The first is a fix in progress for zombie colour variants not showing up, tracked to a b6 build. The second is more disruptive: locked slots reset after closing the inventory. For players who rely on locking slots to protect hotbar items, that is a bug worth knowing about before starting a long session.
Forward look
V3.4.0 is experimental now, with stable promotion unannounced. The locked-slot reset is the issue most likely to delay that promotion, and the search feature is the one most likely to survive into stable unchanged — it touches the interface rather than the simulation.
