Source note: Part 3 — the capstone of the Age of Wonders franchise reference. AoW4 systems are verified against the official Paradox AoW4 wiki and Wikipedia; the tome list is cross-checked against the DBLTAP reference and GameRan’s factionfaction. An in-game group or nation players can align with or fight against, with its own goals and reputation system.-creation guide. Part 1 covered the classic fantasy era; Part 2 covered Planetfall. This part covers the current game and ties the whole franchise together.
Age of Wonders 4 (2023) is the franchise’s most radical redesign: there are no fixed factions. Instead you build one from modular parts — a physical form, a culture, society traits, a ruler origin, and a starting tome of magic — and your faction evolves over the campaign as you research more tomes and transform your race. Twenty pre-made factions ship in the base game, but the builder is the point. This part is a reference for that builder, plus a cross-franchise “How to Choose.”
TL;DR
- What it covers: AoW4’s faction builder, all DLC through Expansion Pass 3, plus franchise chooser.
- Why it matters: No fixed factions — form, culture, traits, ruler, and tomes define your empire.
- Who should pick this: Players who want total faction-building freedom in an actively updated 4X4X. eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate — a grand-strategy subgenre about building a civilization over a long arc..
The AoW4 build axis
A faction is defined by four choices at creation, plus a research path during play:
- Physical form — your race’s body (cosmetic + 2 default body/mind traits you can swap).
- Culture — your society’s playstyle: unit roster, city buildings, province improvements, an affinity, and a cultural skill.
- Society traits — 2 picks that add starting bonuses and specialization.
- Ruler origin — Champion or Wizard King (base), or Dragon Ruler / Eldritch Sovereign (DLC).
- Tomes of magic — the tech tree, grouped by 6 affinities and 6 tiers; your starting tome sets your early affinity.
During the game, your affinity (shifted by tomes, culture, traits, and narrative actions) gates which higher-tier tomes, hero perks, and empire perks you can take, and shapes how other factions receive you.
Physical Forms (10 base + DLC forms)
Forms are cosmetic + traits — you can swap their default traits, so an underground-adapted Elf or an arcane Dwarf is fully legal.
| Form | DLC | Default flavor |
|---|---|---|
| Human | Base | Versatile baseline |
| Elfkin | Base | Keen-sighted, arcane |
| Dwarfkin | Base | Tough, defensive, underground |
| Orcoid | Base | Strong, ferocious |
| Halfling | Base | Quick reflexes, elusive |
| Goblinoid | Base | Sneaky, fast recuperation |
| Feline | Base | Resolute, desert-adapted (Tigran-like) |
| Ratkin | Base | Quick, overwhelm tactics |
| Toadkin | Base | Resilient, water-adapted |
| Molekin | Base | Bulwark, underground-adapted |
| Lizardfolk | Dragon Dawn | Reptilian; draconic synergy |
| Avian | Empires & Ashes | Bird-like; flight-themed |
| Insectoid | Eldritch Realms | Swarm-bodied |
| Syron | Eldritch Realms | Returning classic race |
| Lupine | Primal Fury | Wolf-like; primal synergy |
| Goatkin | Primal Fury | Mountain-ish primal |
| Simians | Ways of War | Ape-like |
| Ogrekin | Ways of War | Large bruisers |
Cultures (6 base + DLC cultures)
Culture is the single biggest playstyle decision — it sets your unit roster, city buildings, and an affinity. Five cultures have sub-cultures that further specialize.
| Culture | DLC | Affinity | Playstyle | Sub-cultures |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Feudal | Base | Order + Nature | Martial adjacency bonuses; food income; hero titles | Monarchy / Aristocracy |
| Barbarian | Base | Chaos + Nature | First-strike melee; fast army recovery; food + draft | — |
| Industrious | Base | Materium (×2) | Tough bolter-defense units; production; prospecting | — |
| High | Base | Order (×2) | “Awakened” hidden abilities; stability + knowledge; alignment bonuses | — |
| Dark | Base | Shadow (×2) | Debuffing; prisons/crypts; ignores low-stability penalties | Death / Tyranny cults |
| Mystic | Base | Astral (×2) | Magic units buffed by spellcasting; mana income; Astral Echoes | Attunement / Potential / Summoning schools |
| Reaver | Empires & Ashes | Chaos + Materium | Militaristic; war spoils; total war; flying scouts | — |
| Primal | Primal Fury | Nature | Totem animals; rising fury; 7 totem sub-choices (Crocodile, Crow, Mammoth, Serpent, Sabertooth, Spider, Wolf) | 7 totems |
| Oathsworn | Ways of War | Order | Warrior codes; 3 Oaths (Harmony / Righteousness / Strife) with Devotion scoring | 3 Oaths |
| Architects | Giant Kings | any ×2 | Build Monuments with Wonderstone; Affinity Incarnate scaling | 6 affinity sub-choices |
The Six Affinities
Affinities are the cosmic powers your empire leans into. They come in opposed pairs, focus on certain damage types, and suit different victory paths.
| Affinity | Opposed by | Damage focus | Best victory fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Order | Chaos | Spirit | Military + Expansion |
| Chaos | Order | Fire | Military |
| Nature | Shadow | Blight / Frost | Expansion |
| Shadow | Nature | Frost / Spirit | Expansion + Magic |
| Materium | Astral | Physical | Military |
| Astral | Materium | Shock / Cosmic | Magic |
Stacking one affinity gets you to its higher-tier tomes faster; spreading gives breadth. Your dominant affinity also determines the magic damage type of some cultural units (e.g., Mystic and Architect units).
Tomes of Magic — the tier system
The tech tree is 50+ tomes across 6 tiers (0–V), each belonging to an affinity. Tier 0 is cultural research (your culture + general research). You unlock the next tome after researching three technologies from your current one, progressing toward higher tiers. To reach a tier-II tome of a given affinity you generally need two tier-I tomes of that affinity — so specializing beats breadth for reaching top-tier magic.
- Tier I — a taste of each affinity (e.g., Tome of Pyromancy/Chaos, Tome of Faith/Order, Tome of Roots/Nature, Tome of Souls/Shadow, Tome of Evocation/Astral, Tome of Rock/Materium).
- Tier II — minor race transformations, strong special units.
- Tier III — major faction changes; e.g., Tome of Dragons (Nature/Chaos, Dragon Dawn), Tome of the Cleansing Flame (Order/Chaos, Eldritch Realms).
- Tier IV — powerful buildings/units; terraforming magic.
- Tier V — god-tier: Tome of the God Emperor (Order), Tome of the Chaos Lord (Chaos), Tome of the Goddess of Nature (Nature), Tome of the Eternal Lord (Shadow), Tome of the Creator (Materium), Tome of the Arch Mage (Astral).
DLC tomes are tagged with their pack (e.g., [Dragon Dawn], [Empires & Ashes], [Primal Fury], [Eldritch Realms], [Ways of War], [Giant Kings]).
Ruler Origins
| Ruler | DLC | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Champion | Base | Risen from your people; +10% gold, +20 stability, +20% unit XP, +100 Free City relations |
| Wizard King | Base | Realm-hopping wizard; +10% mana, +5 casting points/level, Overchannel (cast 2 spells/turn) |
| Dragon Ruler | Dragon Dawn | Customizable dragon; draconic skills/equipment/transformations |
| Eldritch Sovereign | Eldritch Realms | Corrupted by the Umbral Abyss; Thrall spell-casting mechanic; Dominate/Manipulate/Wild paths |
Victory Conditions (4 base + 1 DLC)
| Victory | How | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Military | Conquer or vassalize every other ruler (defeat ruler, then take throne city within 3 turns) | Base |
| Expansion | Hold a province threshold and build/light 3 Beacons of Unity across 3 cities; 15-turn interruption window | Base |
| Magic | Bind enough Gold Ancient Wonders (tier-III tome spell), then summon an “Age of Magic” from a tier-V tome; 15-turn interruption window | Base (reworked post-launch) |
| Score | Highest score when the turn limit runs out (disabled in story realms) | Base |
| Seals of Power | Seize and defend independently guarded seals | Empires & Ashes DLC |
Allied Victories is an optional setting (allies of the winner also win, but allied provinces/Wonders don’t count toward Expansion/Magic).

How to choose an Age of Wonders build (AoW4)
- Military conqueror: Barbarian or Reaver culture + Chaos/Materium tomes + Warlord-style units. Pick Orcoid or Dwarfkin for brute force.
- Expansion/peaceful grower: Feudal or High culture + Order/Nature tomes + food/stability traits. Halfling or Human for growth.
- Magic/tome rush: Mystic culture + Astral tomes (Evocation→Summoning→Scrying→Amplification→Astral Convergence/Arch Mage). Elfkin or Feline for arcane synergy.
- Shadow/undeath: Dark culture (Death cult) + Shadow tomes (Souls→Necromancy→Doomherald→Oblivion→Eternal Lord). Goblinoid or Ratkin for sneaky dark.
- Dragon fantasy: Dragon Dawn DLC — Dragon Ruler + Lizardfolk + Tome of Dragons/Evolution. Pure power-fantasy.
- Eldritch horror: Eldritch Realms DLC — Eldritch Sovereign + Insectoid/Syron + Tentacle/Corruption tomes + Umbral Abyss staging.
- Primal beast-master: Primal Fury DLC — Primal culture + a totem (Wolf/Sabertooth/Spider…) + Nature tomes + Lupine/Goatkin.
- Honorable warriors: Ways of War DLC — Oathsworn + an Oath (Righteousness/Harmony/Strife) + Simians/Ogrekin.
- Wonder-builder: Giant Kings DLC — Architects + Monument scaling + any affinity you want to incarnate.
How to choose across the whole franchise
The Age of Wonders games are not interchangeable — each era offers a fundamentally different “pick a faction” experience. Use this to pick the right game for your mood:
| If you want… | Play | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A fixed fantasy race with deep race-relations diplomacy | AoW1 / Shadow Magic | Race = alignment = diplomacy; 12–15 distinct rosters |
| The largest classic fantasy roster + Shadow World layer | Shadow Magic | 15 races, 5 alignment tiers, random maps, movable Nomad cities |
| Race × class build depth (any race, any class) | Age of Wonders III | 9 races × 7 classes; class units modified by race |
| Sci-fi faction × secret-tech builds + doomsday weapons | Planetfall | 8 factions × 7 secret techs; sector economy; cover-based tactical combat |
| Total creative freedom — build any faction you can imagine | Age of Wonders 4 | Modular form + culture + traits + tomes; race evolves during play |
| The current, actively-updated game with the most content | Age of Wonders 4 | Live service through Expansion Pass 3 (2026); Pantheon meta-progression |
Quick rules of thumb:
- New to the series? Start with Age of Wonders 4 — it’s the most accessible, the best-looking, and the actively-supported one, and the faction builder means you can realize whatever fantasy trope you like.
- Want tactical combat depth without the builder complexity? AoW3 is the sweet spot — the race × class grid is deep but bounded.
- Want the old-school race-driven fantasy 4X? Shadow Magic is the classic-fantasy peak (and cheap on GOG).
- Want sci-fi? Planetfall is the only sci-fi entry, and its faction × secret-tech grid is the closest structural sibling to AoW3’s race × class.
The throughline across 25 years: Triumph keeps the hex tactical combat, hero progression, and race/faction identity at the core, but each era re-invents how you compose your side. Pick the era that matches how much creative control you want over your faction.
With Secrets of the Archmages closing Expansion Pass 3 in mid-2026, AoW4’s live-service runway is now the longest in franchise history. Whatever comes after Season 3 will decide whether the modular builder stays the series’ default mode.
