Firaxis has outlined its post-launch roadmap for Civilization 7, headlined by a major free update and the game’s first paid expansion, both targeting a 2027 release window.
Arc of Tomorrow Free Update
The centerpiece of Firaxis’s update plan is “Arc of Tomorrow,” a free patch that the developer describes as “even bigger in scope” than May’s Test of Time overhaul. The update introduces a fourth Act to Civilization 7, extending the game’s timeline from 1950 to 2050. Currently, Civ 7’s modern age ends in 1950, which means late-game technologies such as nuclear submarines and ICBMs are absent from the base game.
Arc of Tomorrow addresses this with “expanded nuclear gameplay,” adding new units and a new approach to mutually assured destruction. Atomic-era diplomacy options will let players call for nuclear disarmament or escalate warhead production, pushing a doomsday clock mechanic toward midnight.
Beyond nuclear warfare, the update adds the ability to transform settlements into City States and use them to wage Cold War-style proxy wars, avoiding direct conflict with rival empires. Players will also be able to manufacture advanced resources like enriched uranium. A new “Great Works of Film” system lets film crews scout the globe for ideal filming locations, presumably providing cultural benefits.
Earthrise Expansion
Releasing alongside Arc of Tomorrow, “Earthrise” is Civilization 7’s first major expansion. It focuses on space exploration but integrates stellar endeavors across all ages of the game rather than confining them to an end-game Space Age. Players will be able to chart the night sky during antiquity and name celestial bodies. As technology advances through the eras, players can launch orbital missions in the modern age and eventually establish a space agency to explore the solar system.
Release Timeline
Firaxis states that both Earthrise and Arc of Tomorrow are slated for release sometime in 2027. The developer notes that all announced features remain in development and are subject to change.
