Exploration in Enshrouded is directly tethered to the Flame Altar. The corrupted, fog-covered valleys of Embervale are coated in the Shroud—a lethal fungal mist that limits how long the Flameborn can survive before suffocating. Red Shroud areas represent an impassable barrier that instantly kills unprepared adventurers. To pierce these deadly zones and survive longer expeditions, players must continuously sacrifice rare reagents to strengthen the Flame.

What this covers: Flame Level progression requirements (Levels 1 to 9), Shroud survival timer extensions, Flame Altar world capacity limits, and Spark farming locations. Why it matters: Stepping into red Deadly Shroud with a Flame Level below the regional requirement causes your Shroud timer to drain drastically faster, walling off entire regions until the Flame is strengthened. Who should pick this: Flameborn adventurers pushing past the Springlands into the Nomad Highlands and Kindlewastes.

Upgrading the Flame vs Upgrading the Altar

There is a vital distinction between upgrading an individual base’s Altar and upgrading the global Flame Level:

  • Altar Upgrades (Base Radius): Expands the buildable voxel grid of a specific base settlement (from 40x40 up to 160x160 blocks) using Shroud Cores, with the final 160x160 tier costing Shroud Nexus.
  • Flame Level Upgrades (Global Power): A permanent character progression milestone that unlocks new map biomes, extends your baseline Shroud survival timer, and grants +1 attributes to all character stats.

What a Flame Altar Actually Does

The altar is a base tool first and an upgrade sink second. Crafting one costs 5 Any Stone through Manual Crafting, unlocked by the early quest Claim A Spot For Your Base, and placing it marks a permanent build and terraforming zone: every structure and terrain change inside the boundary persists, while anything built outside it resets after 30 minutes or on the next server restart.

  • Placement limit: Only 10 Flame Altars can exist in the world at once, so each outpost competes for one finite budget.
  • Fast travel and rest: Altars double as fast-travel points and heat sources for resting buffs.
  • Skill reset: Interacting with any altar resets the skill tree for 1 Rune per spent skill point.
  • Deactivation: Removing an altar opens a 30-second cancel window. Structures survive until the area resets, a replacement altar restores protection but inherits no size upgrade, and the Flame Level never decreases — global progress is permanent even if every altar is extinguished.

What Each Flame Level Changes Besides the Timer

The Shroud timer is the headline number, but “Strengthen the Flame” also raises altar activation capacity, water source capacity, and a flat attribute bonus that applies from Flame Level 2 onward. Those capacity numbers govern how many crafting stations, water taps, and NPCs a single settlement can support — the real ceiling on a large base.

Flame LevelAltar Activation CapWater Source CapAttribute BonusSurvivors Required
Level 241+10
Level 361+22
Level 475+34
Level 5810+46
Level 6920+58
Level 71030+610
Level 81040+712
Level 91050+814

Two milestones stand out. Survivors enter the recipe at Flame Level 3, so a Level 9 flame ultimately commits 14 rescued NPCs — housing is as much an upgrade material as the ore. And the altar’s own size tiers gate behind the global flame: the 80x80x80 tier needs Flame Level 1, the 120x120x120 tier needs Flame Level 2, and the 160x160x160 tier needs Flame Level 3.

Spark Farming: Flame Sanctums and Shrines

Every Flame Level upgrade demands Sparks—concentrated fire essences found at ancient architectural structures scattered across Embervale.

  1. Flame Sanctums: Massive stone temples housing a central radiant flame basin. Interacting with the basin awards 1 to 6 Sparks depending on the biome—Springlands sites yield a single Spark, while Veilwater Basin sites yield six.
  2. Flame Shrines: Smaller roadside alcoves located along ridgelines and canyon crests. Sparks respawn periodically whenever a server reloads or after a set in-game timer, allowing solo players to re-visit nearby shrines to gather required essences without scouring the entire continent.

Surviving the Deep Shroud

Beyond Flame levels, optimize your survival equipment before descending into mist roots:

  • Hourglass Potions: Chugging a Shroud Survival Flask extends your maximum Shroud time by a flat 2 minutes for the next 45 minutes, and the Greater Shroud Survival Flask adds 4, providing valuable safety margins during lengthy dungeon dives.
  • Return Waypoints: Never enter a deep canyon without placing a fast-travel Flame Altar on the cliff rim directly above. If your timer approaches zero, you can teleport instantly to high ground and safety.

Reading the Shroud Timer

Two colors of fog drive every Shroud decision. White fog is ordinary Shroud and drains the timer at its baseline rate. Red fog marks Deadly Shroud, which depletes the timer far faster and is not meant to be entered below its passage requirement. Several hazards can convert ordinary Shroud into Deadly Shroud, most notably the explosive puffballs.

  • Respawn points restore infinite Shroud time while you stand near them.
  • Noisy canisters and Shroud Survival potions restore a fixed amount of timer.
  • The Guard of the North armor reduces your maximum Shroud time — handy for a self-imposed challenge, dangerous by accident.
  • Upgrading the flame extends the timer and lowers how much Deadly Shroud blankets the map.

Shroud volume can also be cut without permanent upgrades. Destroying the explosive puffballs around a location such as Fort Kelvin thins the fog enough to harvest Shroud resources without becoming enshrouded. Those reductions are not permanent and must be redone after the area resets.

Elixir Wells and Shroud Roots

The Shroud does not appear at random: it springs from Elixir Wells scattered across Embervale. Descending to an Elixir Well and felling the Shroud Root at its bottom awards skill points to every nearby Flameborn, making a well a repeatable reason to dive rather than just a hazard to avoid. An axe is the recommended tool for the root itself, though the enemies crowding it call for a real weapon. Shroud Lairs sit alongside the wells as the other fixed Shroud landmark type, and both are worth marking on the map before you descend.

Crafting the Survival Flasks

The flask that buys extra time is crafted, not found. At an Alchemy Station, a Greater Shroud Survival Flask costs 1 Alchemical Base, 15 Mint Mushroom Meat, and 1 Critter Glands, and stacks 20 to a slot. Mint Mushroom Meat is a Nomad Highlands Shroud resource, so the recipe doubles as a reason to sweep that biome’s mist fields early.

  • Shroud Survival Flask: +2 minutes to maximum Shroud time, 45-minute buff.
  • Greater Shroud Survival Flask: +4 minutes to maximum Shroud time, 45-minute buff.

Both raise the maximum timer, meaning they lift the ceiling that a red-zone dip drains from rather than acting as a heal.

Biomes, Levels, and the Endgame Ladder

The two late regions sit behind the top of the flame. The Albaneve Summits are a frozen, mountainous biome rated level 30–40 with a required Flame Level of 6–8. The Veilwater Basin that follows is a tropical lake biome rated level 35–45 with a required Flame Level of 8–9. The Albaneve Summits’ Shroud fields supply Wolfsbane, Gentian, and the Fell Cyclops and Fell Dragon Youngling trophies, while the Veilwater Basin’s mines supply Aquamarine, Gold Ore, and Mother-Of-Pearl — the ore-and-gem backbone of the Level 8 and Level 9 tribute rows. Each new biome drops the reagents for the next flame upgrade, which is why the region order in the table is also the upgrade order.
