On 29 October 2026, FINAL FANTASY XIV sits in the narrow gap between the last Dawntrail story patch and the point where everything restarts. The live client is Patch 7.57. The next patch, 7.58, has a maintenance date — Tuesday, 10 November 2026 — and no published notes. And the Fan Festival keynote that closes the pre-expansion cycle starts at 7:00 p.m. PT on Friday, 30 October, one day after this was written.

This piece is the state-of-play document: the 7.5x ladder as it actually shipped (including the rungs it skipped), what Evercold has officially confirmed versus what coverage has filled in for it, and the free trial’s real rule set. It is not a retread of our 7.56 coverage, which reported a news event — 7.56’s story quests and the beastmaster launch — and predates 7.57 entirely. This adds the ordering that piece never had, and what to do in the twelve days before 7.58.

What this covers: the Dawntrail 7.5 → 7.57 ladder rung by rung, Evercold’s officially confirmed contents and the ones that are still only expected, and the current free trial’s actual restrictions. Why it matters: the ladder skipped numbers (there is no 7.52, 7.53 or 7.54), which makes “wait for the next patch” advice meaningless — the useful question is which rung carries the content you want back. Who should care: returning players choosing what to do before 7.58 lands on 10 November, anyone deciding whether the free trial now reaches content they care about, and Evercold planners who need to know which claims are Square Enix’s and which are not.

The 7.5x ladder, rung by rung

Square Enix’s patch-notes log for Dawntrail lists exactly five entries for the 7.5 series: 7.5, 7.51, 7.55, 7.56 and 7.57. There is no notes page for 7.52, 7.53, 7.54 or 7.58. That is the whole ladder, and it is shorter than a returning player’s memory of previous cycles usually assumes.

7.58Nothing published. The only official statement is that its maintenance begins Tuesday, 10 November 2026Crystalline Conflict Season 21 notice

A note on that third column, because it is where this kind of article usually goes wrong. Square Enix prints an “Updated on …” stamp on each patch-notes page, and those stamps are revisions, not release dates — the 7.55 notes say they were updated on 4 August 2026, a week after the Lodestone had already posted its database entry for 7.55. So the dates above come from the Lodestone’s own per-patch entries, and 7.56’s is corroborated twice: the 8 September update notice logs a beastmaster-specific hotfix, a job that only exists from 7.56 onward. For 7.57 the anchor is the platform-staggered client update that ran from 9:21 p.m. PDT on 12 October (PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S) to 12:02 a.m. on 13 October (Switch 2).

Two structural facts fall out of it. The odd-numbered sub-patches carry the systems content — 7.51 the Ultimate and the cosmic exploration zone, 7.55 the Occult Crescent and the Phantom Weapon conclusion — while 7.56 carried the story and the new job. And the tail of the ladder is beastmaster maintenance.

Where 7.57 leaves the game today

Patch 7.57’s own summary is two lines: it “introduces same-region player matchmaking to the Japanese data centers, as well as a number of adjustments to the Crucible of the Unbroken.” The matchmaking change is the one with a future: same-region matching widens the pool from a logical data centre to the whole physical data centre, and the notes are explicit that this is a staged rollout — “once same-region player matching has been confirmed to operate stably on the Japan data center, it will be rolled out in turn to other data centers.” If you play on Aether, Chaos or Materia, nothing has changed for you yet.

The Crucible side is more concrete, and it is where the arithmetic lives. Patch 7.57 raises the score for defeating elite enemies “from 625 to 800” and the Sleepless Survival bonus “from 375 to 1,000”, auto-registers familiars to battlehorns when your team holds three or fewer, and defaults the unassigned-battlehorn warning to “No”. Those are numbers a returning beastmaster can plan around; anything else about the duty’s tuning is not in the notes.

Then there is the part that expires. Crystalline Conflict Season Twenty-one closes “with the beginning of Patch 7.58 maintenance on Tuesday, November 10, 2026”, with rewards paid on rank and tier per physical data centre — the top 300 in the Japanese, North American and European centres, the top 100 in Oceania, and only for players who played at least one ranked match. Meanwhile All Saints’ Wake opened on 15 October and Keybound Brawler, the typing event run as a FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE collaboration at the Gold Saucer, opened on 28 October and runs “to the release of Patch 8.0” — note the number, because it is the clearest official statement that Evercold is patch 8.0.

Evercold: confirmed, and merely expected

The expansion itself is not rumour. The Lodestone published “FINAL FANTASY XIV: Evercold Coming January 2027!”, pointing at an official teaser site that was already carrying the keynote trailer at that point and was expanded after Berlin with a second trailer and “a first look at the upcoming bastion job.” What that official teaser site does not carry is a day in January, and no official page I could open states one.

A specific January release day, the second job’s identity, the middle tier’s name, how the two modes interactNot stated anywhere official—

The wording Square Enix uses to define the modes is worth reading closely, because it is the whole of the official definition: “Switch between Reborn Mode, based on the current combat system, and Evolved Mode, designed to highlight each job’s unique identity.” Everything else — whether existing jobs keep their rotations inside Evolved Mode, whether the two share a matchmaking pool, whether switching costs anything — is unaddressed, and the site carries a blanket caveat that “all content and systems introduced on this site are subject to change prior to release”.

Two footnotes on that site matter more than their size. The first: “Players can enjoy certain updates without purchasing Evercold, including: overarching changes to game design; new battle system, PvP updates, and Duty Support updates.” So the battle-system split is not gated behind the box. The second: “The Reborn and Evolved Modes are not applicable to limited jobs. Moreover, new jobs introduced in Evercold can only be played using Evolved Mode.” Read together with 7.56, that settles a question the ladder raises — beastmaster, being a limited job, sits outside the Reborn/Evolved split entirely, and the new Bastion will not be playable in Reborn Mode at all.

The free trial’s actual shape in October 2026

The free trial site leads with the pitch — “Play the Free Trial up to level 80 for FREE with no restriction on playtime!” — and lists “18 different jobs”, with blue mage as the only limited job on that roster. Beastmaster is not among them.

The restrictions are the part people misremember. Gil is capped at 300,000. Chat channels (shout, yell, tell) are unavailable, along with the market board, trading, the moogle delivery service, retainers and Free Companies. You cannot create linkshells or cross-world linkshells but you can join them; you cannot recruit through the Party Finder but you can be invited, and the Duty Finder works normally. PvP is unavailable to trial players, as are Lodestone and forum logins, the companion app, optional items and gift codes. Character creation is capped at eight characters per physical data centre.

One inconsistency is worth flagging rather than smoothing over. The page’s “About” panel advertises “four award-winning games for FREE” and names A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, Stormblood and Shadowbringers, while the rules block says “all classes, jobs, and limited jobs available in A Realm Reborn, Heavensward and Stormblood can be played up to level 80.” The two do not reconcile on the page. Either way, no current endgame is reachable on a trial account: the live cap is 100 and Evercold raises it to 110.

What to do first if you are coming back

The ordering below follows the ladder rather than a content guide’s priority list, so the expiring items come first.

  1. Bank your Crystalline Conflict season. Season 21 ends with 7.58 maintenance on 10 November 2026, and tier rewards require at least one ranked match played. This is the only item on the list with a hard, published deadline.
  2. Finish the 7.56 main scenario. “A Winter’s Dream” starts with Tataru at The Rising Stones, requires a level 100 Disciple of War or Magic and prior completion of “Trail to the Heavens”. Our 7.56 write-up has the surrounding detail; what matters here is that it is the last story beat before 8.0.
  3. Unlock beastmaster, with the right expectation. “Strangers in the Wood” is in New Gridania at X:11.8 Y:13.6, from an Excited Adventurer, and asks only for a level 50 Disciple of War or Magic and “The Ultimate Weapon” — so almost any account qualifies. The job is melee DPS sharing monk and samurai gear, starts at level 1 and caps at 50, and cannot enter Duty Roulettes, deep dungeons, PvP, Ultimate raids, Eureka, the Bozjan Southern Front, the Occult Crescent, Variant or Criterion dungeons, Stone, Sky, Sea, squadron missions or the Hall of the Novice. Retainers cannot be assigned the job; it does earn more FATE experience than other jobs.
  4. Decide whether Crucible Rankings is worth your time. Season 1 began 25 October 2026 and runs “until late November 2026”; scores must be recorded on your Home World with Crucible Mode set to the third degree and the rankings box ticked, and the top 300 per physical data centre receive vouchers. Note the notes’ own known issue: the in-game end date is “incorrectly listed as ‘Early December’”.
  5. Pick your catch-up lane. If you raid, 7.56 already removed the weekly restrictions and enabled the Echo in AAC Heavyweight Tier (Savage), and Dancing Mad (Ultimate) has been up since 7.51. If you gather or craft, Auxesia and the Cosmic Tools came in 7.51 and the Phantom Weapon line closed in 7.55 — the crafting side of that ladder is mapped in our i750 gear and stat breakpoint guide.
  6. Do not wait for the next patch to plan. 7.58 has a maintenance date and no notes; the expansion decision that will shape a day-one character — which mode you intend to play — is yours to make before then.

What is still open, and when it may close

The Tokyo Fan Festival runs 30–31 October 2026, and its schedule describes the keynote as “packed with new information” and the event as “our third and final Fan Festival before Evercold”, streamed in Japanese and English from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. PT on Friday. That is the next place a January day, the physical ranged DPS, or the middle raid tier’s name could appear — until it does, all three remain unstated. Our 7.56 report anticipated that the release date might be revealed at this Fan Fest; the month has since been published officially, and the day has not. Nothing beyond “January 2027”, and nothing about Patch 8.1 or later, appears on any official page cited here.
