Icarus is the survival game where the planet itself is the boss. Monsters can be dodged, kited, and out-planned — but the oxygen meter does not negotiate, the temperature curve does not care about your build, and the talent tree quietly decides whether you spend your points becoming a hunter or just a very organized victim. This is the systems guide: how stamina, oxygen, and talents actually interact, and how to build a prospector that extracts on schedule.

What it covers: Icarus’s survival stat systems (oxygen, temperature, hunger/thirst, stamina), the talent system’s structure and economy, and which talent picks survive contact with the actual game. Why it matters: Icarus’s difficulty comes from stat neglect, not combat — most early deaths are slow ones from ignored systems, and the talent tree is the tool that fixes that. Who should pick this: Prospectors in their first sessions and returning players respeccing for Open World vs timed missions.

The session structure everything hangs on

Icarus has two modes and the survival mechanics read differently in each. Prospects are timed missions: drop in, complete the objective, extract before the timer — the world resets, but your character XP and talents persist. Open World removes the timer for learning. In prospects, every system below is a budget you allocate; in Open World it is a sandbox you experiment in. Respec costs 150 gold per talent point (right-click → Refund Point), so nothing is permanent — experiment.

Oxygen: the clock nobody reads

The planet’s atmosphere is unbreathable, so your suit runs a constant O₂ drain — and the meter is the number one new-player killer. The oxygen supply chain:

TierMethodWhat it doesCost / notes
0Raw OxitePut Oxite rocks in the suit’s oxygen slot — direct refillMine pale blue Oxite rocks; small pieces can be picked up bare-handed
1OxidizerConverts Oxite into breathable air balloon8 sticks, 12 fiber, 20 leather, 10 bone — character-crafted
2Oxite Dissolver + containersFills portable oxygen vesselsSulfur-fueled; feeds Bladders and Tanks
2Oxygen Bladder / TankEquippable suit-slot reserves for expeditionsBladder = light; Tank = extended duration

Two rules make this system work. First, fill everything before you drop — Oxite doesn’t regenerate within a mission, and a refill run mid-contract is a death sentence with extra steps. Second, don’t dive caves early: oxygen drains fastest in thin/toxic air underground, and the dark also hides predators. Gear up (bladders minimum) before deep exploration.

Temperature, hunger, thirst: the quiet killers

Cold biomes and desert heat both drain you on a curve your clothing must answer — a campfire is a survival tool, not decoration. The food system rewards the same upgrade thinking as oxygen: cooked meat and meals give dramatically better buffs than raw scraps (which can also sicken you). The trap is that these meters fail slowly — most early deaths are not predators, they are a neglected warmth bar three minutes before the dropship arrives.

Stamina: the combat currency

Stamina is the system that connects everything: sprinting, attacking, and dodging all draw from it, and running it empty mid-fight is how “fleeing” becomes “dying.” The talent tree treats stamina as an investment line — the Hunting tree’s Chase ‘Em Down adds flat maximum stamina (+10/+25/+40 across levels, and it appears twice for stacking), the Farming line’s Get Up and Go adds +2/+5/+10%, and Quick Getaway triggers 5 seconds of accelerated regen when damaged. For melee-heavy builds, stamina is the DPS stat.

The talent system: 465 points of identity

The structure matters more than any individual talent. Five categories — Survival, Adventure, Habitation, Combat, and Solo — each containing subtrees (e.g., Survival splits into Resources, Hunting, Cooking/Farming; Combat into Bows, Spears, Blades, Firearms). Progression is gated by a rank system: every tree advances through Novice → Apprentice → Journeyman → Master by spending 4 / 8 / 12 points in that tree, with the strongest talents locked behind Journeyman or Master.

The economy: a prospector reaches level 60 with 90 talent points + 30 solo points, plus 18 bonus points from completing specific missions across Olympus, Styx, Prometheus, and Elysium. That is not enough to buy everything — it is enough to buy two strong identities.

Picks that survive contact with reality

ArchetypeCore picksWhy
Solo prospectorSolo tree (Marathon Runner, Fleet Footed, Lone Wolf) + Resources: Dense Packing I/IIWeight capacity and stat resilience carry solo play
Hunter/quartermasterHunting: Fine Butcher I/II, Chase ‘Em Down ×2, Health Bars, Big Game HunterMeat/leather yields + stamina + boss tracking for the whole squad
Builder/settlerBuilding: Discount Wood/Stone, Stone Hauling I/II; Tools: Speedy Mining, Lumberjack EnduranceBase throughput — bases feed oxygen and food chains
Combat specialistBows: Easy Draw, Increased Arrow Damage I/II, Trained Bowman; or Firearms: SharpshooterBows are the quiet early-game standard; firearms scale later

Two structural warnings. First, dependencies are real — Peerless Lumberjack requires Lumber Yield + Wood Breakdown + Seasoned Logsman first; the wiki lists requirements per talent, so check before committing Master-rank points. Second, don’t spread thin: a Novice in five trees beats a Master in zero, but the payoff talents (Ghillie Armor, Arctic Armor blueprints, Peerless Lumberjack) all sit deep — pick one lane to Master first.

Talent-synergy play: the loop the system wants

The design intent is that talents feed the survival systems and the systems feed extraction. The canonical loop: Oxygen Thief (Resources) increases Oxite yield → more Oxite feeds your Oxidizer and Tanks → Steady Breathing (Exploration) and oxygen gear extend cave trips → caves hold the ore that Iron Miner and Unburdened make haulable → the extraction timer hits with you at the dropship, holding everything. Break any link and the whole chain runs late — which is how missions are lost.

Co-op math

Up to 8 players, and the talent system quietly encourages role specialization — a hunter, a builder, and a miner outperform three generalists because yield talents stack with role focus. Explore caves in pairs (oxygen + ambush insurance), and assign one player the clock — calling the extraction window early is a talent in itself.
