After a stretch spent on backend systems rather than new content, Manor Lords is back to adding tangible mechanics. The August beta (version 0.8.097, live on the beta branch) introduces an advanced structures tier, a seasonal food and livestock chain, and a Construction Yard that changes how building work is staffed. It is the kind of update that deepens the simulation’s production logic rather than simply extending its map list.
Advanced buildings and the Construction Yard
The headline system is a new advanced building tier that requires professional builders assigned to a Construction Yard. The Yard does two things: it enables advanced structures (which ordinary families can’t raise alone), and it increases build speeds by 50% when properly maintained. It can also use oxen to transport timber in bulk, which rethinks logistics — timber moves as loads rather than piecemeal.
The split keeps families useful without making specialists optional: ordinary families can still handle material transport and ground flattening, but the skilled work is gated. A new Large Stone Church showcases the building animations that ship with the tier.
A seasonal food chain
The update is unusually food-focused, and the systems interlock:
- Cows (and calves) — imported via the livestock trader — give passive Milk and can be butchered for Beef and Hides.
- Oats can be milled into food or turned into Animal Feed, which cattle and sheep need to survive Winter.
- Cheese is produced from Milk and Salt at a new Cheesemonger, unlocked at Burgage Plot rank three.
- Cider comes from apples; Mead from honey.
- Seasons now gate when pasture animals breed and when produce like Wool and Milk is available, so the annual calendar becomes a planning constraint rather than flavor.
Apiaries are reworked to be seasonal too — yield accumulates through spring and summer and is harvested in the fall, scaled by a Wilding affinity tied to meadow strength. A new Herbage affinity gives a chance for extra yield from pasture animals based on meadow quality. The throughline is that meadows now matter twice: once for honey, once for livestock output.
Maps, interface, and balance
- A new Wide Valley map for fresh starts.
- A main interface overhaul, plus Active Recipes to set precise priority orders for Artisans and storage filters on Trading Posts.
- Realistic fire reactions — workers and animals respond more believably to fires — and smarter rival-settlement AI.
The balance pass is broad. The most structural change: pastures now require 2.2× the area for the same capacity, plus a plank construction cost scaled to size — a deliberate constraint on how much land livestock can dominate. Rye yields are reduced so that Wheat is more efficient above 30% fertility, giving fertility a sharper decision weight. Wax is less valuable in trading, settlement-level milestones and Wooden Churches now grant influence, and build times are generally longer. The cumulative effect pushes players toward more deliberate regional planning rather than rapid expansion.
How to access it
The beta is opt-in: right-click Manor Lords in Steam → Properties → Betas, and enter the password veryNiceBasket. Slavic Magic recommends backing up saves first and removing mods, as they “will most likely crash the game.” The official Steam news post is the source for the update details.
