What Changed
Monster Hunter Wilds launched in February 2025 with 14 weapon types inherited from the franchise’s legacy. Through four Title Updates, Capcom has systematically rebalanced every weapon, widening the gap between how each rewards different playstyles. Title Update 4 (ver.1.040.00.00, released December 2025) buffed all 14 weapons, but not equally—some received transformative changes that reshaped their meta position.
The weapon meta now splits across three distinct playstyle columns: speedrunner (solo kill time optimization), casual (forgiving mechanics with high fun-per-skill-invested), and counter-player (reactive playstyle maximizing parries and offset attacks). A weapon ranked SS for speedrunners might sit at B for casuals. Gunlance exemplifies this divergence—ranked SS, S, and C respectively across three post-TU4 tier lists depending on methodology.
This tier list synthesizes data from Game8, Switchblade Gaming, PC Gamer, and community speedrun leaderboards as of May 2026. Rankings reflect Title Update 4 balance changes, the wound system’s impact on weapon viability, and Seikret synergy pairings.
How It Works
Tier List Methodology
Unlike universal tier lists that optimize solely for solo kill time, this guide evaluates weapons across three playstyle columns:
Speedrunner: Solo kill time optimization. Wound exploitation is critical. Every mechanic evaluated against its contribution to optimal DPS uptime.
Casual: Forgiving mechanics and high fun-per-skill-invested. Strong damage output without perfect execution or memorized combo strings.
Counter-Player: Reactive playstyle. Maximizes parries, Foresight Slashes, Guard Points, and offset attacks. The goal is reading monster telegraphs and punishing harder than anyone else.
Wound Roles (for Seikret pairings):
- Creator: Opens wounds faster than average through rapid hits or concentrated fire
- Exploiter: Maximizes damage to existing wounds through Focus Strikes or high single-hit moves
- Ignorer: Pursues alternative damage strategy—KO buildup, raw DPS chains, or support buffs—without engaging the wound system directly
SS Tier: Meta-Dominant Weapons
Long Sword
- Speedrunner: SS | Casual: S | Counter-Player: SS
- Wound Role: Exploiter
- Learning Curve: Low entry barrier, high mastery ceiling (★★★★★)
Long Sword is SS or S across all three playstyle columns, making it the closest thing to an objectively correct answer in TU4’s meta. The mechanism is Foresight Slash: timing it on a monster’s attack generates near-invincibility during the animation and builds Spirit Gauge for free. That Spirit Gauge feeds directly into Crimson Slash and finisher chains—your counter mechanic powers your DPS output simultaneously. Most weapons force you to choose between playing safe and dealing damage. Long Sword doesn’t.
TU4 extended Special Sheathe duration, smoothing the transition into Iai Spirit Slash and opening longer Foresight Slash setup windows. Combined with Spirit Helm Breaker as one of the game’s highest single-rotation damage outputs, Long Sword’s skill ceiling rose without its floor moving. For counter-players specifically, no other weapon converts defensive timing into offensive momentum as consistently.
Best Weapons:
- Headman’s Hamus (Gogma Artian Weapon with high stats, three level 3 decoration slots, customizable with production bonuses)
- Dimensius (Artian Long Sword with variable infusion and reinforcement stats)
- Wyvern Blade “Maple” (660 attack, 10% affinity, 350 Fire, innate Level 3 Critical Boost)
- Stahlrecht (693 attack, 20% affinity, 300 Dragon, maxed-out Critical Element skill)
Matchup Strengths: Excels against monsters with predictable attack telegraphs. Struggles against highly mobile targets that rarely commit to attack animations.
Great Sword
- Speedrunner: SS | Casual: A | Counter-Player: S
- Wound Role: Exploiter
- Learning Curve: Low entry barrier, moderate mastery (★★★☆☆)
Great Sword’s SS speedrunner rating comes from one move: True Charged Slash. TU4 raised raw damage and elemental scaling on Charged Slash, Strong Charged Slash, and True Charged Slash—positioning-based burst is now more punishing than ever. Focus Mode lets you redirect TCS mid-charge to track moving monsters, which is the specific technique separating a 7-minute Arch-Tempered clear from a 12-minute one.
The A casual rating is honest. Pre-commit positioning still punishes players who haven’t learned monster telegraphs. Great Sword forgives nothing when the monster sidesteps before TCS lands. Once you recognize the tells, the A rating is generous—experienced players find GS exceptionally readable. For counter-players, Focus Mode redirect plus Perfect Guard into TCS is one of the most satisfying reactive sequences in the game.
Best Weapons:
- Ostrak Oblivion (Gogma Artian Weapon with high stats, three level 3 decoration slots)
- Düsterstolz (1008 attack, 20% affinity, 400 Dragon, innate Critical Element)
- Stalwart Lamorak (1056 attack, 0% affinity, 500 Dragon, innate Focus)
Matchup Strengths: Dominates slow, heavy monsters that commit to long animations (Gogmazios, Arch-Tempered Arkveld). Struggles against fast, evasive targets.
Bow
- Speedrunner: SS | Casual: B | Counter-Player: A
- Wound Role: Creator
- Learning Curve: Medium entry barrier, high mastery (★★★★☆)
Bow creates wounds faster from safer distances than any other weapon. Spread and Pierce arrows hammer concentrated areas repeatedly, opening wounds that Great Sword and Gunlance then destroy with Focus Strikes. In multiplayer, a Bow player setting up wounds for a GS teammate is one of the highest-value damage roles in the game. TU4 boosted Dragon Piercer and Arc Shot raw damage, plus enhanced Charged Shot scaling and coating application speed—all changes that reinforce Bow’s position at the top of solo speedrun rankings.
The B casual rating is the most misunderstood rating in this table. Bow demands simultaneous management of Stamina and the Trick Arrow Gauge under active hunt conditions. That’s a skill requirement that doesn’t scale down with more casual play—you can’t play Bow casually the way you can play Long Sword casually. The SS casual rating for Light Bowgun exists specifically because it removes these management demands.
Best Weapons:
- Calamitous Angel (Gogma Artian Weapon with high stats, three level 3 decoration slots)
- Dark Filament (240 attack, 10% affinity, 200 Fire, innate Critical Boost 3)
- Verzweiflung (252 attack, 20% affinity, 150 Dragon, Critical Element 3)
Matchup Strengths: Excels at wounding flying monsters and targets with accessible weak points. Struggles in close quarters against aggressive monsters that close distance rapidly.
Light Bowgun
- Speedrunner: S → SS (TU4) | Casual: SS | Counter-Player: B
- Wound Role: Creator
- Learning Curve: Low entry barrier, low mastery (★☆☆☆☆)
LBG moved from S to SS in most rankings after TU4 because of two specific patch changes: Eagle Strike Rapid Fire Gauge recovery was “greatly increased,” and Wyvernblast cooldown was “greatly reduced.” These aren’t incremental tweaks. Greater gauge recovery means more Focus Strike windows per hunt. Shorter Wyvernblast cooldown means more burst damage per fight window. Combined, they fundamentally change LBG’s damage uptime without changing how the weapon plays at a fundamental level.
Its SS casual rating is the highest in this list for the casual column. No positioning requirements, no resource micromanagement beyond standard ammo selection, and genuine variety through ammo types for every encounter type.
Best Weapons:
- Bethorned Agony (Gogma Artian Weapon with high stats, three level 3 decoration slots)
- Szelatya Clairgun (286 attack, 0% affinity, high raw damage with Pierce Ammo)
- Animilater (247 attack, 5% affinity, three 3rd-level decoration slots for elemental builds)
- Valkyrie Flame (273 attack, 15% affinity, Pierce Ammo with innate Poison Duration Up)
Matchup Strengths: Universal matchup coverage. Excels at kiting fast monsters and applying status effects.
S Tier: High Reward, Defined Strengths
Dual Blades
- Speedrunner: S → SS (TU4) | Casual: A | Counter-Player: B
- Wound Role: Creator
- Learning Curve: Low entry barrier, moderate mastery (★★★☆☆)
Dual Blades own the elemental DPS slot in TU4’s meta. The TU4 Demon Boost Mode mid-movement exit improvement means you can now sustain Demon Boost without committing to full combo strings before repositioning—a significant quality-of-life change that raises the effective skill floor upward. Sharpness consumption on Focus Strike: Turning Tide was also reduced, extending edge life in prolonged fights against high-health endgame monsters.
The B counter-player rating is accurate and deliberate. Dual Blades have limited reactive mechanics compared to Long Sword, Great Sword, or Charge Blade. This is a weapon that deals damage aggressively rather than responding to incoming damage.
Best Weapons:
- Eternal Cusp (Gogma Artian Weapon with high stats, three level 3 decoration slots)
- Precipice Ulokiem (294 attack, 0% affinity, 300 Ice)
- Hungerklauen (280 attack, 20% affinity, 150 Dragon, Critical Element 3)
Matchup Strengths: Dominates monsters weak to elemental damage. Struggles against targets with high elemental resistance.
Gunlance
- Speedrunner: S* | Casual: A | Counter-Player: S
- Wound Role: Exploiter
- Learning Curve: Medium entry barrier, moderate mastery (★★★☆☆)
*Gunlance’s speedrunner rating carries an asterisk because three current post-TU4 sources place it at SS, S, and C respectively. The methodology difference: one source cites sub-7 minute Arch-Tempered monster times; another weighs overall consistency across all monster types; a third appears to penalize GL for matchup-dependent performance against mobile monsters where Wyrmstake Cannon placement becomes unreliable. All three are valid methodologies producing different correct answers.
Our S speedrunner rating reflects average performance across the full monster roster. Against Gogmazios or Arch-Tempered Arkveld—slow, heavy targets—GL competes for SS. Against fast, evasive monsters, it drops toward A. TU4 improved Wyrmstake Cannon targeting and Focus Mode accuracy, which directly addresses its weakest matchup category.
Best Weapons:
- Auguring Omen (Gogma Artian Weapon with high stats, three level 3 decoration slots)
- G. Lawful Bors (552 attack, -10% affinity, 250 Dragon, Slightly Strong Wide Shelling)
- Argenesis (437 attack, 5% affinity, 370 Any Element, 3,3,3 decorations)
Matchup Strengths: Excels against slow, stationary targets. Struggles against highly mobile monsters.
Sword and Shield
- Speedrunner: A | Casual: SS | Counter-Player: A
- Wound Role: Creator
- Learning Curve: Low entry barrier, moderate mastery (★★★☆☆)
SnS earns the highest casual rating in the table for a mechanic most tier lists don’t mention: you can use items—potions, flash pods, traps—without sheathing the weapon. That single feature makes SnS fundamentally safer during chaotic multiplayer hunts than any other option in the game. TU4 improved Perfect Rush hitboxes and Forward Slash damage, moving SnS from merely accessible to genuinely strong at the same time.
Best Weapons:
- Kyrie Verd (Gogma Artian Weapon with high stats, three level 3 decoration slots)
- Precipice Mateptro (294 attack, 0% affinity, 350 Ice)
- Corona (280 attack, 10% affinity, 250 Fire, innate Critical Boost 3)
Matchup Strengths: Universal matchup coverage. Best weapon for learning the game.
Charge Blade
- Speedrunner: A | Casual: C | Counter-Player: SS
- Wound Role: Exploiter
- Learning Curve: High entry barrier, moderate mastery (★★★☆☆)
Charge Blade’s SS counter-player rating seems at odds with its A speedrunner placement until you understand Guard Points. Guard Points are frame-precise windows within specific CB animations where a successful block converts incoming damage into a phial-loading counter attack. Land one and you add phials, reposition, and counter simultaneously—the highest-reward defensive mechanic in the game when executed correctly.
TU4 extended guard point windows and added smoother transitions between weapon modes, making Guard Point timing more consistent without requiring frame-perfect precision. The C casual rating is equally accurate: learning phial management, SAED timing, and Guard Point execution simultaneously is a genuine investment.
Best Weapons:
- Promised Abyss (Gogma Artian Weapon with high stats, three level 3 decoration slots)
- Dear Lutemia (756 attack, 15% affinity, 200 Poison, Offensive Guard 2)
- Leidenskraft (756 attack, 20% affinity, 250 Dragon, high white sharpness)
Matchup Strengths: Dominates in the hands of practiced counter-players. Not recommended for casual or new players.
A Tier: Dependable at Any Skill Level
Switch Axe
- Speedrunner: S (TU4) | Casual: A | Counter-Player: A
- Wound Role: Exploiter
- Learning Curve: Medium entry barrier, low mastery (★★☆☆☆)
Switch Axe received the broadest move-level buffs in TU4: Unbridled Slash damage increased, Focus Assault combinations boosted, element discharge enhanced, and new evasion chaining mechanics added. The evasion chaining is the critical change—it removes the static vulnerability window during morph transitions that previously made SA feel punishing in endgame hunts.
Best Weapons:
- Wicked Regnum (Gogma Artian Weapon with high stats, three level 3 decoration slots)
- Eisengeist (700 attack, 20% affinity, 200 Dragon, Critical Element)
- Rath Blaze Splitter (700 attack, 10% affinity, 250 Fire, Critical Boost)
Insect Glaive
- Speedrunner: A | Casual: B | Counter-Player: B
- Wound Role: Creator
- Learning Curve: High entry barrier, moderate mastery (★★★☆☆)
Insect Glaive creates wounds from aerial attacks, giving it a unique positional advantage against monsters where ground contact is dangerous or repositioning is frequent. TU4 simplified Descending Slash chaining and removed knockback from Rising Spiral Slash—two changes that smooth the aerial combat flow without fundamentally altering the weapon’s identity.
The B casual rating reflects Kinsect management: keeping red, white, and orange extracts active adds resource tracking overhead that isn’t immediately obvious.
Best Weapons:
- Limbo Llor (Gogma Artian Weapon with high stats, three level 3 decoration slots)
- Gravordius (775 attack, -15% affinity, 250 Blast)
- Queen Regalia (651 attack, 15% affinity, 180 Poison, Critical Status 3)
Hammer
- Speedrunner: B | Casual: S | Counter-Player: B
- Wound Role: Ignorer
- Learning Curve: Low entry barrier, high mastery (★★★★☆)
Hammer’s alternative to the wound system is head targeting for KO buildup. The KO chain—land head hit, monster stumbles, reposition, repeat—is readable and satisfying without optimization, which explains the S casual rating alongside the B speedrunner placement. TU4 extended Spinslam follow-up movement, giving Hammer more head-tracking coverage during its highest-DPS animation.
Best Weapons:
- Bound Admonition (Gogma Artian Weapon with high stats, three level 3 decoration slots)
- Binder Mace (1144 attack, 0% affinity, 250 Paralysis)
- Blazing Uria (1144 attack, 5% affinity, 250 Dragon, Whiteflame Torrent)
B Tier: Niche Value or Steep Learning Curve
Heavy Bowgun
- Speedrunner: A | Casual: B | Counter-Player: S
- Wound Role: Exploiter
- Learning Curve: Low entry barrier, moderate mastery (★★☆☆☆)
Heavy Bowgun’s S counter-player rating comes from one mechanic: Wyverncounter Ignition. Offset it correctly and TU4’s new gauge restoration triggers on success—a reinforcement loop that rewards counter timing with more counter opportunities per hunt.
The B casual rating is accurate. HBG is slow, ammo management is extensive, and mobility during combat is limited.
Best Weapons:
- Trembling Hels (Gogma Artian Weapon with high stats, three level 3 decoration slots)
- Mountainous Roar (315 attack, 15% affinity, Pierce Ammo focus)
- Ableben Abzug (300 attack, 20% affinity, Critical Element with Slicing Ammo)
Hunting Horn
- Speedrunner: B | Casual: A | Counter-Player: B
- Wound Role: Ignorer
- Learning Curve: High entry barrier, high mastery (★★★★★)
Hunting Horn’s B speedrunner rating reflects solo kill time reality—not the weapon’s full value. In Monster Hunter Wilds multiplayer, Lord Soul song synergy buffs the entire party’s damage output, stamina, and affinity simultaneously. That multiplier effect makes HH’s real contribution to a hunt impossible to measure through solo metrics. TU4 increased Performance Beat raw damage slightly, giving Hunting Horn more solo viability without changing its core identity as a support weapon.
Best Weapons:
- Onyx Choros (Gogma Artian Weapon with high stats, three level 3 decoration slots)
- Resounding Galahad (882 attack, 0% affinity, 400 Dragon, useful song set)
- Ajara-Jivaka (882 attack, 10% affinity, 250 Blast, Slugger 3)
Lance
- Speedrunner: C | Casual: B | Counter-Player: A
- Wound Role: Ignorer
- Learning Curve: Low entry barrier, high mastery (★★★★☆)
Lance is the clearest example of why playstyle-specific tiers matter. Its C speedrunner rating reflects genuinely low solo kill times on standard content. Its A counter-player rating reflects four TU3 buffs, every one of them targeted at the counter-guard loop: Triple Thrust damage significantly increased, Guard Dash animation speed improved, Power Guard chip damage reduced, Shield Tackle damage buffed. No DPS optimization. No speedrun utility. Pure counter-play enhancement.
TU4 continued that pattern—High Thrust and Triple Thrust damage increased further, and Perfect Guard now chains faster. Lance players don’t kill monsters faster than other weapons. They punish harder after every successful parry than any other weapon can.
Best Weapons:
- Aether Pike (Gogma Artian Weapon with high stats, three level 3 decoration slots)
- Blazing Sital (506 attack, 5% affinity, 200 Dragon, Whiteflame Torrent)
- Spear of Prominence (483 attack, 10% affinity, 350 Fire, Critical Boost)
Build Path
For New Players
Recommended Starting Weapons: Sword and Shield or Long Sword
Sword and Shield teaches positioning and in-combat resource management with a forgiving moveset and no sheath requirement for items. You can use potions, flash pods, and traps without sheathing—fundamentally safer during chaotic multiplayer hunts.
Long Sword teaches counter timing through Foresight Slash in a way that builds instincts transferable to every other weapon in the game.
Build Priority (Monster Hunter has no character attributes — builds come from weapons, armor skills, and decorations):
- Primary: Match the weapon’s damage profile — raw attack for hard-hitters (Great Sword, Hammer, Gunlance shelling), elemental value for fast multi-hitters (Dual Blades, Bow, Insect Glaive), and affinity (critical rate) scaling for both
- Secondary: Armor skills via decorations — Weakness Exploit and Critical Boost for raw builds, Critical Element for elemental builds, sharpness-management skills (Handicraft, Protective Polish) for melee
- Universal: Health Boost and Divine Blessing for survival; the Seikret’s two-weapon carry covers matchup flexibility instead of any stat spread
For Theorycrafters
Seikret Synergy Pairings
The Seikret system lets you carry two weapons per hunt. The optimal approach pairs a wound Creator with a wound Exploiter to maximize Focus Strike damage windows. Switch based on wound availability, not preference.
| Creator | Exploiter | Why It Works |
|---|---|---|
| Bow | Gunlance | Bow opens wounds from range; GL Wyrmstake Cannon obliterates them on a locked target |
| Dual Blades | Great Sword | DB rapid hits build wounds; GS True Charged Slash delivers maximum single-hit burst |
| Light Bowgun | Long Sword | LBG Eagle Strike sets wounds safely; LS Foresight Slash counter + Spirit Gauge destroys them |
| Sword and Shield | Charge Blade | SnS creates wounds and heals mid-combat; CB Guard Points punish into SAED phial detonation |
Endgame Weapon Goals
Gogma Artian Weapons represent the endgame ceiling for all weapon types. These weapons feature:
- High base stats
- Three level 3 decoration slots
- Customizable Set Bonus and Group Skill rolls
- Production bonuses (Focus and Reinforcements) that further boost stats
Title Update 4 Meta Shifts
- Light Bowgun: Moved from S to SS due to Eagle Strike gauge recovery and Wyvernblast cooldown reductions
- Dual Blades: Moved from A to SS due to Demon Boost Mode QoL updates and increased elemental cap
- Hunting Horn: Moved from B to A due to Gogma Artian Weapons offering better song selection
- Gunlance: Dropped from SS to S (only received minor QoL changes, overtaken by other weapons receiving significant buffs)
