Palworld — Best Base Locations & Resource Node Guide
Palworld’s base-building layer is the backbone of long-term progression. Ore, coal, stone, wood, and Pals with correct workspeeds feed your crafting chain — and where you plant your Palbox determines how efficiently those inputs arrive. This guide ranks base locations by three hard criteria: resource density (nodes within a Palbox radius), terrain defensibility (choke points, walls, raid exposure), and fast-travel access (nearest statue of the great eagle).
A few assumptions: Palbox placement radius is roughly the area Pals will path to for work and the area raids spawn within. Resource node counts shift between patches — Pocketpair has adjusted spawn tables multiple times — so treat node counts as approximate and re-scout after major updates.
What it covers: Base locations ranked by resource density, terrain defensibility, and fast-travel access. Why it matters: Palbox placement decides how efficiently inputs arrive — it is the backbone of progression. Who should pick this: Players placing their first serious base.
How to Evaluate a Base Spot
Before the ranked list, the three criteria in concrete terms:
Resource Density
A top-tier early base has ore nodes (for ingots), stone, and wood all inside the Palbox circle. Mid-game you add coal (for refined ingots) and sulfur (for ammunition). Late-game wants quartz/pure quartz and high-tier Pal spawns nearby. Node respawn timers matter: nodes refill on a cycle, so 4–6 ore nodes in-range sustain continuous smelting with minimal Pal downtime.
Terrain Defensibility
Flat buildable ground with natural choke points (cliffs, water, ravines) reduces wall material costs and funnels raiders. Avoid spots with wide open approaches on all sides unless you’re willing to wall the full perimeter. Elevated plateaus and islands give Pals fewer pathing exploits during raids.
Fast-Travel Access
Every base should be near a statue of the great eagle (fast-travel point). The travel network is how you move Pals, materials, and yourself between bases — a base more than a short run from the nearest statue adds friction every session.
Tier S — Best Overall Base Locations
1. Ruined Fortress (Near the Desert Edge)
The ruined fortress in the central-northern region is widely considered the single best single-base spot for mid-to-late progression. The structure provides pre-built walls and choke points, cutting wall material costs dramatically. Inside the walls there’s flat ground for a large Palbox footprint, and the surrounding region has ore, coal, and sulfur within reach.
- Resource density: High — ore and coal in the surrounding region; sulfur a short run out.
- Defensibility: Excellent — existing walls funnel raids through two main gates.
- Fast-travel: Near the Fort Ruins fast-travel statue.
- Best for: Mid-to-late game main base when you’re running refined ingot production and ammo lines.
The catch: it’s contested territory. Other players on dedicated servers may target it, and the nearby desert has heat mechanics that require heat-resistant armor for comfort.
2. Sealed Realm Fast-Travel Hub Region
The area around the first Sealed Realm fast-travel point (near the starting plateau’s descent) is the strongest early-game base. It has a cluster of ore nodes, wood, and stone inside a compact radius, and the statue is steps away. The terrain is partially enclosed by hills, giving decent natural screening without full walls.
- Resource density: Good for early game — a cluster of ore nodes, ample wood/stone.
- Defensibility: Moderate — hills on two sides, open on the others.
- Fast-travel: Adjacent to a statue.
- Best for: First base, levels 1–20, before you have the gear to push north.
Tier A — Strong Specialized Bases
3. Mount Flossic Slope (Ore + Coal Combo)
The slopes around Mount Flossic have overlapping ore and coal spawns, making it ideal for ingot production at scale. You’ll run multiple furnaces here feeding a central storage that ships refined ingots out via fast-travel.
- Resource density: Very high for ore + coal; lower for wood.
- Defensibility: Mixed — slope terrain can cause Pal pathing issues on stairs/ramps.
- Fast-travel: Moderate distance to nearest statue.
- Best for: Dedicated smelting outpost; not a main base.
4. Snow Region Outpost (Pure Quartz + Late Materials)
The snow biome hosts pure quartz and late-game material nodes, plus cold-adjacent Pal spawns. You’ll need cold-resistant armor before operating here. A small outpost (not a full main base) lets you mine quartz and ship it south.
- Resource density: High for quartz; low for basics.
- Defensibility: Moderate — open snowfields, some rock formations.
- Fast-travel: Sparse statue coverage; plan travel routes carefully.
- Best for: Late-game quartz supply chain node.
5. Coastal Flatland (Southern Beach)
The southern coastal flatland gives a large buildable footprint, ocean access (useful for water-adjacent Pal spawns and transport), and a low raid threat profile because of the water boundary on one side. Resource density is moderate — you’ll likely import ore.
- Resource density: Moderate — wood/stone good, ore requires import or a nearby node run.
- Defensibility: Good — water on one side reduces wall length.
- Fast-travel: Near a southern fast-travel statue.
- Best for: Breeding-focused base or secondary production hub.
Tier B — Situational
6. Starting Plateau
The initial spawn plateau is flat and safe but resource-thin for ore. Fine for the first hour; relocate once you can survive the run to the Sealed Realm area.
7. Volcanic Region Rim
Lava-adjacent terrain has sulfur and volcanic Pals but extreme heat and difficult buildable ground. Use as a mining camp, not a main base.
Comparison Table
| Location | Tier | Primary Resources | Defensibility | Fast-Travel | Best Stage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ruined Fortress | S | Ore, coal, sulfur | Excellent | Near | Mid–late |
| Sealed Realm Hub | S | Ore, wood, stone | Moderate | Adjacent | Early |
| Mount Flossic Slope | A | Ore, coal | Mixed | Moderate | Mid (smelting) |
| Snow Outpost | A | Pure quartz | Moderate | Sparse | Late |
| Southern Beach | A | Wood, stone | Good | Near | Mid (breeding) |
| Starting Plateau | B | Wood, stone | Good | Adjacent | First hour |
| Volcanic Rim | B | Sulfur | Poor | Moderate | Situational |
Base Staging by Progression
Early Game (Levels 1–20)
Build your first base at the Sealed Realm hub region. Priority outputs: ingots from ore, basic weapons, a handful of work Pals (Lamball for handiwork/transport, Cattiva for mining at low workspeed). Keep the Palbox small — you’ll relocate. Run 1–2 furnaces and a stone pit. Don’t over-invest in walls; hill screening is enough until raids ramp.
Mid Game (Levels 20–40)
Move your main base to the Ruined Fortress. Scale to 4+ furnaces, a coal-fed refined ingot line, and a breeding farm. Add Pals with higher workspeeds and correct work types: Anubis-tier (or equivalent) handiwork Pals, mining Pals at level 3+ mining. Wall the fortress gates, add a pal-transport route between storage and furnaces.
Late Game (Levels 40+)
Run three bases: the fortress main base for production, a Mount Flossic smelting outpost for ore/coal throughput, and a snow region quartz outpost for pure quartz. Move Pals and materials via the fast-travel network. Late-game ammunition, high-tier spheres, and endgame armor all pull from these three supply chains.
Resource Node Reference
- Ore: Found in rocky/mountainous terrain across most biomes. Respawns on a timer. Primary ingot source.
- Coal: Concentrated in desert and volcanic-adjacent regions. Required for refined ingots.
- Sulfur: Volcanic and desert regions. Required for ammunition (gunpowder chain).
- Pure Quartz: Snow biome. Required for late-game circuitry and advanced crafting.
- Stone/Wood: Universal; density varies. Wood from forests, stone from rocky ground and pit quarries.
Defensibility Quick Rules
- Wall the choke points, not the perimeter. Pre-existing terrain walls save materials.
- Elevate storage and crafting. Pals path better on flat ground; keep workstations on level terrain.
- Funnel raids through gates. Raiders spawn inside the Palbox radius — gate placement controls where they hit.
- Watch Pal pathing on slopes. Ramp/stair bases cause Pals to get stuck; prefer flat builds for production.
Common Mistakes
- Over-building the first base. You will relocate. Don’t sink walls into the starting plateau.
- Ignoring fast-travel distance. A resource-rich spot far from a statue costs you time every session.
- Single-base strategy in late game. Throughput needs specialization — one base can’t smelt, breed, and mine quartz efficiently.
- Wrong Pal work types for the job. A mining Pal without the mining work tag won’t mine; check work suitability before assigning.
Patch Caveats
Palworld’s resource spawns, Palbox radius, and raid mechanics have changed across multiple patches. Node counts in this guide are approximate. After any major update, re-scout your base spots before committing materials. The Sakurajima update and subsequent patches adjusted spawns and added new regions.
