Palworld’s breeding system is the single most important long-term progression mechanic in the game. Catching wild Pals gives you baseline stats and random passives; breeding lets you stack ideal passive combinations, lock in high IVs, and produce species you cannot reliably obtain otherwise. This guide covers how the breeding power table determines offspring species, how IVs and passives inherit, and which pairings matter for combat and base-labor rosters.

How Breeding Power Determines the Child
Every Pal in Palworld has a hidden breeding power integer. When two Pals breed, the game averages the two parents’ breeding power values and looks up the species whose breeding power closest matches that average. This is why combining two dissimilar species often yields a third, unrelated Pal — it is not a lineage tree, it is a numeric mapping.
Reading the Power Table
The breeding power table is community-documented and consistent within a given patch, though Pocketpair has adjusted values and combinations across major updates (most extensively in the 1.0 release, which revised breeding values across the entire Paldeck). Key principles:
- Same-species breeding produces the same species, which is how you refine IVs and passives on a single Pal line.
- Averaging two high-power (low-number) Pals tends to produce a strong combat Pal, since legendaries and boss-tier Pals occupy the low end of the scale.
- Averaging two low-power (high-number) Pals produces weak early-game species — useful only for filling out the Paldex.
Legendary and tower-boss Pals are excluded from breeding output in most cases, so you cannot breed your way to a Jetragon directly. You breed toward the strongest breedable combat species and then enhance them with passives and IVs.
Breeding Farm Requirements
To breed, you need a Breeding Farm structure, at least one male and one female Pal assigned to it, and a supply of Cake. The base-level Breeding Farm requires Cake; additional cake recipes (unlocked at later technology levels, such as Mushroom, Vegetable, and Special Cake) can be placed in the same farm’s chest to alter breeding outcomes — improving IVs, producing extra eggs, or boosting passive inheritance. Pals must be opposite sex, not gender-locked, and not in the “cannot breed” category. Assigning a Pal with high Work Suitability in the farm’s labor type speeds up cake consumption and egg production.
IV Inheritance and Stat Optimization
Each Pal has Individual Values (IVs) for HP, Melee Attack, and Defense, ranging from 0 to 100. Wild-caught Pals roll these randomly. Offspring IVs are drawn from the parents’ IVs for each stat, with community data indicating a mix of parental inheritance and some random re-rolling rather than a clean, predictable average — so high-IV parents tend to produce high-IV lines, but individual stats still vary egg to egg.
The IV Refinement Loop
Because child IVs trend toward the parental average, the optimization loop is:
- Catch or breed many candidates of your target species.
- Identify the highest-IV male and highest-IV female for each stat you care about.
- Breed them together. The child’s IVs cluster near the average.
- If the child exceeds a parent, swap it in as the new breeder.
- Repeat until both parents sit at or near 100 in the target stats.
This is why breeding is a generational grind — each generation nudges the average upward, and you discard offspring that roll below the parental average. Stockpile cake and set up a dedicated breeding base with multiple farms running in parallel to compress the timeline.
Which Stats Matter
- Combat Pals: Prioritize HP and Melee Attack. Defense IV matters for tanks but is secondary for burst-damage builds.
- Mount Pals: Movement speed is not an IV — it is a passive and species-base issue. Focus HP for survivability during travel.
- Base-labor Pals: IVs are largely irrelevant. Work speed is governed by Work Suitability level and passives, not IVs.
Passive Skill Inheritance
Each Pal can hold up to four passive skills. Offspring randomly inherit passives from the parents’ pools. The inheritance is not a clean 1:1 copy — the child rolls a subset from the combined parental passive list, and there is a chance of receiving a random new passive from the global pool.
Inheritance Mechanics
- If a parent has all four slots filled, those passives form the inheritance pool. Empty slots on a parent reduce the pool size.
- A child that inherits passives filling all four slots cannot gain additional passives until one is overwritten via breeding with a partner carrying a different passive set.
- Duplicate passives shared by both parents are collapsed into a single entry in the combined pool, so they neither help nor harm the inheritance odds.
The Passive-Stacking Workflow
The standard method for building a perfect passive set:
- Start with two parents of the target species, each carrying one or two of your desired passives.
- Breed until a child inherits the union of the parents’ desired passives.
- Swap that child in as a new breeder paired with another Pal carrying the next desired passive.
- Repeat until a single child holds all four target passives.
- Then run the IV refinement loop on passively-complete breeders, so you do not waste generations re-rolling passives.
Order matters: lock in passives first, then optimize IVs. A Pal with perfect IVs but the wrong passives is far harder to fix than a Pal with perfect passives and mediocre IVs, because IVs average upward predictably while passive inheritance is probabilistic.
Optimal Passive Combinations
Combat DPS Build
The dominant offensive passive stack for combat Pals is:
- Vanguard (party attack bonus)
- Motivated Legend / Legend (attack multiplier)
- Musclehead (attack multiplier, reduces sanity)
- Ferocious (attack multiplier)
This stack trades sanity management for raw damage output. On Pals with self-sustain or when paired with a player who manages food/sanity, this is the ceiling for DPS. Some builds swap an offensive passive for a survival passive depending on the encounter, and balance patches have adjusted multiplier values over time.
Tank / Survival Build
- Burly Body (defense multiplier)
- Hard Skin (defense multiplier)
- Diet Lover (reduced food consumption)
- Serious (work speed — useful if the tank doubles as a base defender)
Base Labor Build
For farming and crafting Pals, the priority passives are work-speed oriented:
- Serious (work speed)
- Lucky (work speed)
- Work Slave (work speed, reduces attack)
- Artisan (work speed)
A base Pal with all four work-speed passives and a level 4+ Work Suitability in its assigned task dramatically outperforms a higher-level Pal with no work passives. This is why breeding dedicated labor Pals is worthwhile even though their IVs do not matter.

Producing a Target Species
Because the child species is determined by the averaged breeding power, producing a specific target requires knowing which parent pairing averages to that species’s power. Community breeding calculators — which encode the full power table — are the practical tool here. The general workflow:
- Look up your target species in a breeding calculator.
- The calculator lists parent pairings whose averaged power maps to that species.
- Choose the pairing where both parents are easiest for you to obtain or already have bred.
- Breed until you get the target species offspring with the desired sex for your next pairing.
Same-Species Refinement
Once you have your target species, stop cross-breeding and switch to same-species breeding. Same-species pairs always produce the same species, which is what you want once you are refining passives and IVs. Cross-breeding is only for initial species acquisition.
Farming and Base-Labor Roster Breeding
For a production-focused base, you want dedicated specialists rather than generalists. Breed separate lines for each Work Suitability type:
- Kindling (Kindling 3+): Suzaku or Ragnahawk lines for smelting and cooking.
- Handiwork (Handiwork 3+): Anubis for high-tier crafting — also a strong combat Pal, so the breeding investment pays double.
- Mining (Mining 3+): Digtoise or Astegon for ore automation.
- Planting/Gathering: Lyleen for planting and gathering, with work-speed passives.
- Transport: Helzephyr or Direwolf variants with speed passives for moving goods between stations.
Breed each line with the four work-speed passives, then assign them to a base with the correct food supply and a bed layout that minimizes travel time. A fully optimized labor base can run indefinitely with minimal player intervention.
Common Pitfalls
- Breeding without a plan wastes cake. Decide your target passives and species before assigning breeders.
- Ignoring sex ratios. You need a male and female of compatible breedability. Some species are heavily sex-skewed, so stockpile candidates of the rare sex.
- Over-investing IVs on labor Pals. IVs do not affect work speed. Spend those generations on passives only.
- Forgetting that passives overwrite. A child with four passives cannot gain a new one without losing an existing one through a breeding overwrite. Plan your passive order so the weakest passive is the one you are willing to lose.
- Assuming legendaries are breedable. Most boss-tier and legendary Pals are excluded from the breeding pool. Check the species’s breedability before investing resources.
