Stellaris’s ascension paths are the long-term decision that defines what your pops become. Since the 3.6 “Orion” rework, each path is no longer two stacked ascension perks; it is one perk that unlocks a tradition tree and a multi-stage situation that transforms your population. This tier list ranks the paths by how reliably their payoff matches their cost, and explains how to pick one based on empire type, what you can afford, and what you want at the endgame. All values here are drawn from the official Stellaris wiki and the rework dev diary; where a number depends on DLC, that is noted.

What changed

The rework consolidated five loosely-defined paths into four formal ones plus a machine-only branch:

  • Psionic Ascension — regular empires only, requires Utopia; entered via the Mind Over Matter perk or the Teachers of the Shroud origin, then the Psionics tradition tree and a Psionic situation (Shadows of the Shroud DLC).
  • Genetic Ascension (Biomorphosis) — regular empires and hive minds, requires Utopia; the Engineered Evolution/Biomorphosis perk opens Genetic traditions. The Biomorphosis situation (BioGenesis DLC) is a 0–1800 progress situation with three approaches: Mutation, Cloning, Purity.
  • Cybernetic Ascension — regular empires, hive minds, and Driven Assimilators, requires Utopia; entered via The Flesh is Weak or Organo-Machine Interfacing, then Cybernetic traditions. The Cyberization situation (Machine Age DLC) is a 0–1000 progress situation.
  • Synthetic Ascension — regular empires and machine intelligences; requires Utopia for regulars, Synthetic Dawn for machines. Regulars take Synthetic Evolution; machines take Synthetic Age. The Synthesization situation (Machine Age) converts pops to Mechanical.
  • Machine-only branch — Synthetic Age / Transformation (Machine Age DLC): the Synthetic Age perk starts a Transformation situation that studies Nanotech, Modularity, and Virtuality before locking a path.

Each path now unlocks gradually through traditions instead of being dumped while paused, which the dev diary called the intended design goal.

How it works

The situation system

Every path runs through a situation with a progress bar, stages, and approach choices you can switch between. Progress speed is modified by buildings, jobs, civics, and your chosen approach. Stages gate events and often require a building before they continue:

  • Biomorphosis — base +15/month, +1.25% per 100 Genomic Researchers; three stages (0–600, 601–1200, 1201–1800), each fires an event that picks an approach and grants a permanent stacking modifier. Stage 1 needs a Genomic Research Facility; stage 2 advances Gene Tailoring; stage 3 picks the Purity/Cloning/Mutation tradition tree.
  • Cyberization — base +10/month; four stages (0–250, 251–500, 501–750, 751–1000). Pauses after stage II until you build an Augmentation Center, then cyberizes pops monthly until none remain.
  • Synthesization — base +10/month; four stages mirroring Cyberization, pausing after stage III until an Identity Complex is built, then synthesizing pops monthly.
  • Psionic Ascension — base +10/month over 0–1000 in three stages; stage II needs a Psi Corps building, stage III needs the Great Awakening tradition. Approaches toggle event weighting and unity/progress trade-offs (Organized Meditation, Watch and Wait, plus Zro or Astral Thread variants).
  • Transformation (machine) — three study stages (Nanotech, Modularity, Virtuality) and a fourth that locks the chosen path; each study can be prioritized at a research-speed cost to seed a deposit on the capital, tripled once committed.

Approach trade-offs

Most situations offer a speed-vs-safety lever. Cyberization’s Overdrive multiplies progress by 1.2 but takes a -15% engineering research hit and weights “challenge” events five times heavier; Cautious cuts progress to 0.8 for less risk and +5 “opportunity” event weight. Synthesization mirrors this with Overclocked (×1.2), Real Time, and Error Correcting (×0.8). The Cybernetic Creed origin’s Conclave of Fusion situation scales differently, driven by Technophant and Haruspex jobs. Reading the approach tooltip before you pick matters: faster is rarely free.

Resource cost

The real cost is not the perk slot — it is the buildings, jobs, and strategic resources the situations demand. Biomorphosis wants Genomic Researchers and Genomic Research Facilities. Cyberization and Synthesization both hard-stop until you build and staff an Augmentation Center or Identity Complex, so you need the construction capacity and the pops to run them. Psionic wants a Psi Corps and leans on Zro (and Astral Thread with Astral Planes) for the higher-unity approaches. Machine Transformation seeds deposits of Nanites, Living Metal, or Energy/Dark Matter depending on path. Plan the economy before you commit, because a stalled situation is wasted perk slots and tradition progress.

Build path (the tier list)

This is a payoff-vs-cost ranking, not a flavor ranking. Tier reflects how reliably the path delivers its advertised advantage given a competent economy.

S tier — Synthetic Ascension (regular and machine)

Synthetic Evolution turns your organic pops into immortal, low-upkeep synthetics you can heavily specialize, and machine Synthetic Age opens the three Machine Age sub-paths (Nanotech, Modularity, Virtuality), each with its own tradition tree. The community tier lists rate Synthetic Age the top ascension perk overall. Cost is high — Synthetics technology is a dangerous tech for regulars, and the Identity Complex is a hard gate — but the ceiling is the highest in the game: full pop specialization, assimilation of foreign robots, and a finisher that adds trait picks and roboticist jobs. Pair with Mechanist origin or a Materialist ethic for the smoothest tech path.

A tier — Cybernetic Ascension

The Flesh is Weak / Organo-Machine Interfacing opens Cybernetic traditions, which now work for regulars, hive minds, and Driven Assimilators with tradition swaps per empire type. The payoff is a mid-point between staying organic and going full synthetic: cyborg traits that borrow from the robot trait list at a discount, reduced empire size from cyborgs, the ability to spend robot modification points on organics, and an assimilation option for integrating alien pops. Driven Assimilators get a uniquely strong version (Crucible Worlds, +1 pop assimilated per planet per year). Cost is moderate — Integrated Cybernetics tech plus an Augmentation Center — and it scales well into the late game without the dangerous-tech risk of full synthetic. A safe, strong default.

A tier — Psionic Ascension

Mind Over Matter (or Teachers of the Shroud) opens the Shroud, psionic leaders, psionic armies, and a Covenant finisher. The rework replaced the old +5%/+10% energy-from-jobs with unity-from-jobs, and made Telepaths boost only psionic pops’ output (rising to +10% after Breach the Shroud), so a psionic empire runs fewer but more efficient pops. Cost is low — only a Psi Corps — and the Teachers of the Shroud origin skips the perk entirely while blocking every other path, so it is the cleanest on-ramp. The catch is variance: the Shroud is random, and the payoff depends on which entity you covenant with and what you roll. Strong ceiling, higher variance than synthetic or cybernetic.

B tier — Genetic Ascension (Biomorphosis)

Engineered Evolution opens Genetic traditions, and the BioGenesis Biomorphosis situation grants stacking modifiers per approach taken (Purity gives pop growth speed, Cloning gives organic pop assembly, Mutation gives habitability and auto-modding throughput). The rework added transgenesis technologies that splice Leviathan traits (Drake-Scaled, Voidling, Polymelic) and cross-class traits (Lithoid traits on non-Lithoids, Plantoid traits on non-Plantoids) into your species. The flexibility is unmatched — you can tailor pops per planet — but the cost is high: Gene Tailoring, Genomic Research Facilities, and frequent special projects to modify species, plus you stay biological and keep consumer-goods and habitability concerns. Hive minds get the cleanest version. Powerful if you enjoy micromanagement, slower to pay off than the machine paths.

B tier — Synthetic Age / Transformation sub-paths (Nanotech, Modularity, Virtuality)

Machine-only, locked behind the Synthetic Age perk and the Machine Age DLC. The Transformation situation studies all three before you commit, so you can pick based on what your seeded deposits support. Each unlocks its own tradition tree if a slot is free. The community tier lists rate Virtuality and Nanotech highly as traditions, but the choice is gated by having the strategic resources (Nanites, Living Metal, Dark Matter) to lean in. A strong but resource-conditional pick.

C tier — staying unascended

You can finish a campaign without committing to a path, and some “tall” megastructure builds (Galactic Wonders, Master Builders, Cosmogenesis) compete for the same perk slots. But an ascended empire’s specialized pops and reduced empire size usually out-scale an unascended one by the crisis year, so this is a deliberate challenge run rather than a default.

How to choose

Match the path to your empire type first, because the gating is hard:

  • Regular Materialist empire, tech-focused — Synthetic. The dangerous-tech risk is real but the ceiling is the highest; Mechanist origin smooths the start.
  • Regular empire, wants safety or a mixed army — Cybernetic. Lower tech risk than synthetic, works for hive minds and assimilators, and the cyborg trait list is broad.
  • Regular Spiritualist, or Teachers of the Shroud origin — Psionic. The origin blocks every other path, so the choice is made for you; otherwise it is the cheapest and lowest-variance if you like the Shroud flavor.
  • Hive mind — Genetic (the cleanest version) or Cybernetic. Synthetic is closed to hive minds.
  • Machine Intelligence — Synthetic Age and one of the three Transformation sub-paths, chosen by which strategic resource you can secure.
  • Driven Assimilator — Cybernetic, which you can unlock by assimilating 30 pops instead of needing a perk.

Then weigh cost against payoff. If your economy cannot staff the situation buildings (Augmentation Center, Identity Complex, Genomic Research Facility, Psi Corps) or supply the strategic resources, slow down and build the economy before taking the perk — a stalled situation wastes the perk slot and the tradition progress. If you can staff them and want a reliable endgame, Synthetic and Cybernetic are the top two; if you want the cheapest entry and do not mind randomness, Psionic; if you want maximum pop tailoring and do not mind the micro, Genetic.

What it means

The rework made ascension a gradual journey rather than a paused decision: each path has a building gate, an approach lever, and a population-conversion phase you can watch complete. Path choice is also an economic choice — the perk is cheap, the situation is not. Pick the path your empire type can legally take, confirm you can afford its buildings and resources, and you reach the endgame with a transformed population instead of a stalled progress bar.
