Source note: Part 2 of the Stellaris 3.14 “Circinus” cheat sheet. Tier letters follow the community guide by Argure (based on Montu Plays’ tier lists), cross-checked against the Stellaris Fandom wiki and community discussions. Part 1 covered empire creation (ethics, origins, civics). This part covers the choices you make during the campaign.

Part 1 covered the choices you lock in before unpausing — ethics, origin, civics, authority. Part 2 covers the choices that define the middle and late game: which ascension path you commit to, which tradition trees you adopt, and which ascension perks you spend on them. These are the decisions that turn a generic empire into a specialized powerhouse — or a dead end.

What it covers: All four ascension paths, every tradition tree, and every ascension perk, rated. Why it matters: These mid/late-game picks turn a generic empire into a powerhouse or dead end. Who should pick this: Stellaris players deciding path, tradition order, and perk order.

Ascension Paths

An ascension path is the single biggest transformation your empire can undergo. You pick one via an ascension perk (tier 1), which unlocks a special ascension tradition tree. There are four paths, and they are mutually exclusive — pick one and commit. Some origins (Teachers of the Shroud, Cybernetic Creed, Synthetic Fertility) lock you into a specific path; the rest are open.

The four paths, in community-consensus strength order:

Ascension Path Comparison

PathTierPerk tierBest forKey payoffWeakness
CyberneticST1General use, trade, wide+10% global output, +5% specialist output, +40yr lifespan, +20% habitability, −10% upkeep — all from the tradition + assimilation alone, before traits. Cheap perk, cheap modding.Niche without a trade or habitability build.
GeneticST1Slavery, conquest, min-max, Hive MindsClone Vats, +2 mod points, biological ascension traits (Erudite, Robust, Nerve Stapled), per-planet subspecies specialization. Best minmax ceiling.High micro; no global output bonus (only Robust +5% for 4 points); conquered/immigrated pops don’t auto-assimilate.
PsionicAT1Tall, rush, spiritualists, ship supremacyLatent→Psionic pops, Psi Corps, Shroud covenants (Composer of Strands is strongest), Chosen One leader, best ship techs (Psi Shields, Psi Jump Drive, Precog computers), +115% pop output from telepaths on a Sanctuary world.Weakest pop growth; RNG-dependent (mitigated by Teachers of the Shroud); locked to Spiritualist flavor.
SyntheticBT1Machine empires, ease of use, lategameImmortal leaders, +10% robot output, assimilate everyone into one species (removes species lag), perfect habitability. The strongest lategame trait (Under One Rule).Comes online very late; assimilation resets species to unmodded (post-3.6 bug); Spiritualist FE declares war on you.

The four paths in detail

Cybernetic is the community’s pick for best general-use path. The Cybernetic tradition + assimilation alone grants +10% global output, +5% specialist output, +40 years leader lifespan, +20% habitability, and −10% pop upkeep — before you add a single cyborg trait. The perk is tier 1 (cheap), the ascension project is cheap, and pop-modding special projects are extremely cheap. Cyborg traits are flexible: double trade value, double research, whatever you want. It has a built-in pull toward Materialism, which makes conquered Spiritualist pops easy to manage. Recommended for general use — especially trade builds (stack Thrifty + Trading Algorithms for 1.25×→1.5× trade) and wide playstyles.

Genetic is the minmax ceiling. You get Clone Vats (+1.5 organic pop assembly), +2 genetic modification points, and access to biological ascension traits: Erudite (researcher output, leader bonuses), Robust (+5% all output, +30yr lifespan, +30% habitability), Nerve Stapled (for slaves), Delicious (for livestock). You can create a dedicated subspecies for every job — research pops, mining pops, alloy pops — each perfectly tailored. The catch is micro: conquered and immigrated pops don’t auto-assimilate, so you’ll spend decades gene-modding them, and the special project costs stack. Recommended for slavery/conquest builds and Hive Minds (hives don’t care about trade). Pairs exceptionally with the Overtuned origin for absurd trait stacking.

Psionic is the rush and tall path. It comes online fast (especially with Teachers of the Shroud), and its pop efficiency is unmatched: a Sanctuary world with telepaths can hit +115% pop output, and a single forge Ecumenopolis can crank 5k+ alloys. The Shroud grants the best ship techs in the game — Psi Shields, Psi Jump Drive (longer range), Precog computers (tracking). A Chosen One admiral is a fleet unto itself. The weakness is pop growth (psionics get none) and RNG: the Shroud is a slot machine, though covenants are no longer strictly random in 3.6+ and the Composer of Strands is the reliable strong pick. Recommended for spiritualists, tall play, and rush builds.

Synthetic is the lategame power and ease-of-use path — and the only real option for most Machine empires. You turn all organic pops into synths: immortal leaders, +10% robot output, perfect habitability everywhere, and you can assimilate the entire galaxy into one species (eliminating the notorious species lag). The downside is timing: the required techs (Synthetics) can take decades to roll, and post-3.6 assimilation resets pops to an unmodded template, so late-game modding projects stack to extreme durations. A Spiritualist Fallen Empire will also declare a humiliating war on you when you ascend. Recommended for Machine empires and players who want a simple, powerful lategame. It also offers the strongest lategame trait via the Under One Rule origin.

Which path should I pick?

  • Unsure / general useCybernetic. Strong, cheap, flexible, no hard counters.
  • I want to micro and minmaxGenetic. Highest ceiling, especially with Overtuned or slavery.
  • I’m Spiritualist or want to rush/tallPsionic. Best ship techs, best pop efficiency, fast online.
  • I’m a Machine empire or want it simpleSynthetic. Immortal leaders, assimilate everything, strongest lategame.

Tradition Trees

Traditions are adopted one tree at a time, costing Unity. Each tree has an adoption bonus, several perk tiers, and a completion bonus. Completing a tree grants one ascension perk slot. In 3.1+, you choose which trees to adopt rather than filling a fixed set — so tradition order is a real decision.

There are base-game trees, expansion trees (gated by DLC), and ascension trees (gated by ascension perks). Below are all of them, rated.

Ascension Tradition Trees (gated by ascension perks)

These are unlocked by taking the corresponding ascension perk. They operate like normal traditions but are far more playthrough-defining. All require the Utopia DLC.

TreeUnlocked byTierNotes
CyberneticThe Flesh is Weak / Organo-Machine InterfacingSBest of both Genetic and Synthetic. Special project gives all pops the Cybernetic trait; cyborg traits; Assembly Standards policy. Fits almost any build.
GeneticEngineered EvolutionSClone Vats, +2 mod points, biological ascension traits, Leviathan Transgenesis on completion. Best minmax.
PsionicMind over MatterALatent→Psionic, Psi Corps, Shroud entry, covenants. RNG mitigated in 3.6+.
SyntheticSynthetic Evolution / Synthetic AgeB+25% leader exp, +1 level cap, turn organics mechanical. Must-pick for Machine empires; roundabout for others.

There’s no single correct order, but here are strong openers by playstyle:

PlaystyleRecommended order
Tech rushDiscovery → Expansion → Prosperity → (ascension tree) → Supremacy
Wide/conquestExpansion → Supremacy → Domination → Prosperity → (ascension tree)
Tall/Void DwellersExpansion (Void Dweller variant) → Discovery → Prosperity → Mercantile → (ascension tree)
Megacorp/tradeMercantile → Prosperity → Diplomacy → Statecraft → (ascension tree)
Spiritualist/unityHarmony → Discovery → Statecraft → (Psionic tree) → Supremacy
GestaltSynchronicity → Expansion → Supremacy → Domination (gestalt) → (ascension tree)

Discovery first is the classic safe opener — survey speed and anomaly bonuses are invaluable early, and the +10% research speed completion bonus stays strong all game. Supremacy is near-mandatory if you expect war. Statecraft is sleeper-strong: its agenda speed/duration lets you keep a powerful agenda running nearly constantly, which compounds with whatever your council is good at.

Ascension Perks

Ascension perks are unlocked by completing tradition trees. Tier 0 perks are available immediately; tier 1 requires 1 prior perk, tier 2 requires 2, tier 3 requires 3. You have limited slots, so every pick matters. Below are all perks, rated.
