Setting & Narrative
The game is set in the Arcadia planetary system in the year 2361, within an alternate timeline where the 1901 assassination of U.S. President William McKinley never occurred. Without Theodore Roosevelt’s anti-monopoly policies, megacorporations came to dominate society. Players control an Earth Directorate Commander aboard the ship Incognito, dispatched to investigate interdimensional rifts threatening the colony. Arcadia is governed by the Protectorate, an authoritarian regime ruled by Henry Varick, grandson of colony founder Alexandra Varick. The Protectorate is engaged in a factional war against Auntie’s Choice, a megacorporation seeking to monopolize skip-drive technology, and the Order of the Ascendant, the Protectorate’s former research branch.
Core Mechanical Updates
The Outer Worlds 2 retains the first-person perspective of its predecessor while introducing a toggleable third-person view, a feature largely unavailable in the original game outside limited sequences. Obsidian expanded the weapon selection and increased the overall focus on action combat. Players alternate between combat, stealth, and dialogue systems when encountering hostile NPCs, and the branching dialogue tree system returns, influencing story paths based on interactions with party members and supporting characters.
Development & Reception
Development began shortly after the first game’s 2019 release, entering full production two years later. Tim Cain, co-director of the original The Outer Worlds, remained involved as a creative consultant before departing Obsidian in 2020. Despite critical praise, the title underperformed relative to Microsoft’s internal sales projections.
