AION 2 launched on Steam and NC’s PURPLE launcher on 5 October 2026, free to play and PC only, and has been patched in the same weekly maintenance slot every week since. That rhythm — not any single patch — is the thing worth reading closely, because it tells you how fast the item-level ladder climbs, how much of the update budget goes into tuning the ladder back down, and what NC is charging for alongside it.

The two AION 2 articles already on this site cover the launch window’s structure and the 13/14 October update. Neither asks the question this one does: what has the update cadence actually been, week by week, and does a weekly patch schedule plus a first raid on 4 November look like an endgame that holds the audience the launch drew?

What this covers: every AION 2 update NC has shipped since launch — four consecutive weekly patches, the tiered hard-mode dungeon rollout that ends at Ludra on 4 November, the first Daeva Pass season, the live event calendar, and the weekly account-restriction notices in between. Why it matters: the endgame gate climbed from item level 2,600 to 2,700 to 2,800/3,000 between 21 October and 4 November, and one of those patches trimmed boss attack by 15% alongside its new content — the cadence is as much catch-up as content. Who should care: lapsed launch players deciding whether to return before Ludra, groups still choosing a server, and anyone budgeting for the Daeva Pass and the skins that ship alongside it.

What the launch window promised, in NC’s numbers

NC’s launch-week release claims AION 2 “amassed 400,000-plus concurrent players (CCU) on Steam” immediately after launch, and held the number one spot across three Steam charts at once: Top Sellers, Popular New Releases and Trending Free. It also says the game stayed number one on Steam’s Global Top Sellers chart and in 15 territory charts since Early Access opened on 30 September.

The 26 October release adds the first-18-days tally: 108.2 million hours played, more than 6.3 million characters created, 53.2 million instances cleared including 21.1 million party dungeon runs, and more than 26.4 million PvP kills. Urugugu Canyon is the most-cleared instance at nearly four million clears on Normal difficulty, and the class leaderboard runs Gladiator first, then Chanter, then Sorcerer. NC also claims 35.6 million hours watched on Twitch since Early Access.

That release contradicts itself on its own headline. The title says players “dedicate 12,000+ game years”, while the body text says the 108.2 million hours amount to “more than 6,000 years of combined playtime”. 108.2 million hours is roughly 12,300 years, so the headline is the figure that survives the arithmetic — but a press release that disagrees with itself about its headline number is one to read with a calculator to hand.

The monetisation model was published before launch in NC’s own FAQ: “AION 2 is free to play with an optional monthly membership”, offering “optional paid cosmetic items, a Battle Pass and a membership to access player-driven economy & currency exchanges”. That gives three things to check against what has actually shipped: cosmetics, a battle pass, and the membership that gates economy features.

The patch cadence as it has shipped

Four patches in four weeks, every one inside the same weekly maintenance window (Tuesday evening Pacific, Wednesday morning Central European). Each carried one headline content addition and a list of tuning and fixes.

The 13/14 October patch is the outlier and has its own write-up — see the Halloween patch and server-transfer breakdown for rules and rewards this piece does not repeat. Only two of the four patches added a new dungeon tier, and both landed in the second half of October.

The ladder, not the patch, is the content

The pacing device in AION 2 is item level, and the schedule is legible. Hard-mode expeditions opened at 2,600 on 21 October, the next pair at 2,700 on 28 October, and Ludra opens at 2,800 for Normal and 3,000 for Hard on 4 November. That is roughly 100 item levels a week, and a 200-point spread at the raid because both Ludra difficulties unlock at once.

Endgame gateItem levelOpened
Krao Cave and Draupnir, Hard2,60021 October 2026
Urugugu Canyon and Vakron Sky Island, Hard2,70028 October 2026
Ludra, Normal2,8004 November 2026
Ludra, Hard3,0004 November 2026

The tuning in the 27/28 October patch went the other way, and that is the more revealing half. Boss attack fell 15% on Normal Expedition and Transcendence stage 1, and boss attack plus damage boost each fell 10% on Hard stages 2 to 4, with Transcendence stages 1 and 2 losing 6.5% boss HP. NC’s stated reason is survivability: the changes “will help prevent characters with lower progression levels from being defeated in a single hit”. The same patch raised level-45 base HP for every class — Gladiator and Templar from 4,702 to 6,202, the other six from 4,702 to 5,702 — and cut the Assassin’s Illusive Clone cooldown from 90 seconds to 60.

Three weeks after launch, the ladder was being sanded down rather than extended. The gear side got the same treatment: crafted gear Amplify caps rose (True Dragon and Star Dragon from 1 to 3, White Dragon and Dark Dragon from 3 to 5), and cross-tier transfer opened up, so Tier 3 Expedition gear can now transfer to Tier 2 crafted gear and Tier 2 Expedition to Tier 1 crafted — NC’s own worked example is an Enraged Kromede Necklace into a White Dragon Lord Necklace. That is a catch-up mechanic for anyone who arrives late, delivered as a patch note.

Ludra on 4 November is the first scheduled test

NC’s Ludra announcement is unusually direct about what the boss represents: “Ludra is the first major challenge players will face in AION 2.” Both difficulties open immediately to players at the item-level requirements, and the fight arrives with a 14-day check-in track from 4 to 17 November plus a Hall of Fame that gives the first 20 hard-mode parties per region exclusive titles: 10 players per region for the first clear, 40 for second through fifth, and 150 for sixth through twentieth, across Europe, NA East, NA West, South America and Asia.

The more interesting number is the Daeva Bootcamp milestone ladder NC attached to it: rewards unlock globally at 500,000, 1,250,000, 3,000,000, 5,000,000 and 7,000,000 dungeon clears during the event window, counted across the Conquest and Transcendence dungeons in the event list. That is a public scoreboard for endgame participation with a fixed ceiling — the closest thing to a retention metric NC has published. There is also a four-times Odyle Energy delivery by in-game mail, once a day per account, from 28 October to 10 November — a resource top-up timed to get the playerbase to 2,800 before the raid.

Servers, three weeks in: pairings rotate, transfers closed

The 28 October matchmaking notice republishes the Abyss pairing list: 23 pairings in Europe, 9 in NA East, 5 in NA West, 6 in South America and 10 in Asia. It also states the rule that breaks the launch-window assumption: pairings are refreshed to keep combat balanced, and “the same factionfaction. An in-game group or nation players can align with or fight against, with its own goals and reputation system. may now be matched together (Example: Asmodian vs. Asmodian)”. The one-faction-per-server structure described in the launch primer on classes, factions and servers still holds; what changes is who you meet in the Abyss and the Spacetime Rifts.

Transfers are over, and the terms tightened before they closed. The 26 October Server Transfers Update put the service on hold, then resumed it with the minimum character level raised to 45 — the transfer terms published on 9 October had set the floor at 10, which is the figure the earlier article on this site records because it was correct on the day. The 27/28 October patch then closed the transfer period outright, moved the two shop items back out of Substance Morph, and restored the standard Odyle Energy limits: 4 per character per week and 16 per server per week.

What the cadence costs

Three things now run on overlapping clocks: the battle pass, the attendance events, and the cosmetic store. The Daeva Pass arrived on 28 October as season 1, “Prelude to Flight”. There is a free Basic track and a Premium track at 1,000 Quna, both purchasable once per character, running to the 1/2 December maintenance, with a maximum level of 50 and levels buyable at 50 Quna each.

The expiry calendar is a cadence of its own. Daeva Pass items and shop coins are claimable to 15 December, three pass item types are deleted on 16 December, and the Resurrection Spiritstones sold for Kina under Rise to the Challenge are removed on the same date. A player returning after a break has to read the deletion column as carefully as the reward column.

Enforcement runs on the same weekly schedule

The most consistent post-launch series from NC is not a patch at all. Eight account-restriction notices went out between 10 and 28 October, and each states a count.

Restriction date (as stated in the notice)Accounts restricted
10 October4,996
12 October10,000
14 October9,422
15 October7,933
16 October10,326
20 October15,380
23 October12,586
28 October4,651

That is 75,294 accounts restricted in 19 days. Every notice carries the identical reason field — gold farming and bot operations, use of unauthorised programs, real-money trading, and “abnormal trading patterns that disrupt the game economy” — and each states that normal play, “including long grinding sessions”, is not affected. The notices do not split bots from RMT from economy abuse, so the composition of that 75,294 is not knowable from them, and this piece does not guess at it.

What the concurrency numbers say, and what they do not

The launch peak is well attested: SteamDB’s notice, carried on the game’s Steam feed, records 397,905 concurrent players on 5 October. Steam’s own most-played rollup, whose latest entry covers 28 October, now lists AION 2 ninth by peak concurrent players at 231,472, against eighth place in the previous week’s rollup. Against the launch-day peak, that is a decline of roughly 42%.

NC’s own publicly repeated figure — 400,000-plus concurrent players — is the launch number restated in the 26 October release, not a post-launch measurement. No retention curve, weekly average or returning-player figure has been published, so the honest position is that the concurrency question is open.

What does move it is scheduled: 4 November. Ludra is the first dated piece of endgame content since launch, the Daeva Bootcamp ladder gives a global dungeon-clear total with a 7,000,000 ceiling, and the pass and attendance events run to early December. If the endgame is holding, the clear totals and the raid’s Hall of Fame fill rate are where it shows first.

What is not confirmed

No dated roadmap beyond 4 November appears in NC’s Steam announcement feed for the game, and the Producer’s Letter posted on 14 October carries no text body in its Steam announcement, so no roadmap commitment can be sourced from it. NC has not published a post-launch concurrent-player figure, has not broken down the restriction counts by reason, and has not dated a return of the transfer service, though it has said the service may be resold.
