Pearl Abyss launched Crimson Desert, a single-player action-adventure RPGRPG. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is planned for early 2027. The game sold three million copies within its first week and received generally positive reviews, holding Metacritic scores of 77/100 on PC and 78/100 on PS5.
Gameplay & World
Set on the open-world continent of Pywel, Crimson Desert follows Kliff, a member of the Greymanes factionfaction. An in-game group or nation players can align with or fight against, with its own goals and reputation system., through a high-fantasy landscape shaped by factional conflict. The combat system, powered by Pearl Abyss’ proprietary BlackSpace Engine, combines combo attacks, environmental traversal, and elemental magic. Players can engage in horseback combat, fight large-scale bosses including dragons, and access a variety of weapons and abilities.
Beyond combat, Pywel offers fishing, cooking, crafting, and hunting activities. Pearl Abyss drew inspiration from Sicily, Italy to inform the continent’s architecture and natural landscapes. The game is strictly single-player, with no multiplayer integration planned.
Development & Technology
Development began in early 2018 under the codename Project CD, with the title officially announced at G-Star 2019. Originally conceived as a prequel to Black Desert Online, the project was reimagined during early development as a standalone experience in a separate universe. Total development spanned seven years.
The BlackSpace Engine—an upgraded version of the engine used in Black Desert Online—features a custom XML scripting system that allows non-programmers to parse data more quickly than Python or Lua-based pipelines. On September 1, 2026, Pearl Abyss released a free 20-minute cloud-streamed demo via Twitch using Amazon GameLift Streams on AWS infrastructure.
DLC: Charting the Unknown
During a Sony State of Play presentation on September 3, 2026, Pearl Abyss announced Charting the Unknown, a DLC expansion releasing October 15, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows. The expansion adds naval combat, underwater exploration, additional mechs, and expanded base-building housing features. Narratively, Kliff travels beyond Pywel aboard a ship alongside companions Oongka and Damiane.
