Dragon Age: The Veilguard shipped on October 31, 2024, from BioWare and Electronic Arts as a single-player RPGRPG. Role-Playing Game — a game built around character progression, story, and player choices. centered on the player-created hero Rook and a team of seven companions. The official EA page emphasizes that players must “unite the Veilguard and defy the gods,” and the Steam store description calls out fluid combat combined with the companion ability wheel to exploit weaknesses. For players trying to build the strongest team compositions, the system is less about raw stats and more about pairing the right primer and detonator abilities across Rook and the two companions who can be active in combat at any time.

How the Combo System Works

Every companion has five abilities, but only three can be equipped for a given mission. Abilities are tagged as either primers or detonators for three status effects: Overwhelm, Sundered, and Weakened. A primer applies the status, and a matching detonator consumes it for a combo explosion that deals increased damage and stagger. The companion ability wheel highlights valid combo opportunities with arrows, so the order matters: prime first, then detonate. BioWare’s progression blog notes that Rook and companions each have their own skill trees, and building relationship levels grants companions skill points that improve these abilities.

Overwhelm increases stagger damage on the target, Sundered increases general damage taken, and Weakened reduces the target’s own damage output. Detonating any of the three creates the same explosion, but the applied effect changes how the fight feels. Sundered combos speed up a kill on a priority target, Weakened combos reduce incoming pressure from a heavy hitter, and Overwhelm combos make it easier to break an enemy’s stagger bar for a takedown opportunity.

As companions level up, players can convert these single-target explosions into area effects, making the combo system scale from focused single-target burst into crowd control as the game progresses.

The Seven Companions and Their Roles

BioWare lists seven recruitable companions on the official site, each with a clear combat identity.

Lace Harding is the scout and archer. Her abilities include Seismic Shot, Heavy Draw, Shred, Adrenaline Rush, and Soothing Potion. Heavy Draw detonates Overwhelm, and Shred applies Sundered, so she can either set up a target for increased damage or finish a stagger combo started by someone else.

Davrin is the Grey Warden who fights alongside Assan. His abilities are Battle Cry, Death from Above, Heroic Strike, Assan Strike, and In War, Victory. Heroic Strike applies Overwhelm, while Death from Above detonates Weakened, giving him a clear combo pair with a Weakened primer.

Bellara manipulates the Fade with electricity and control magic. Her abilities are Fade Bolts, Enfeebling Shot, Replenish, Time Slow, and Galvanized Tear. Fade Bolts detonates Sundered, and Enfeebling Shot applies Weakened, making her a strong partner for either a Sundered detonator or a Weakened detonator.

Taash is the dragon hunter who dual-wields axes and breathes fire. Spitfire applies Overwhelm, and Dragonfire Strike detonates Weakened. Taash works well as either an opener or a closer for stagger-focused teams.

Lucanis is a mage killer who deals necrotic damage with dual daggers. Eviscerate detonates Overwhelm, and Debilitate applies Sundered. He also carries Soothing Potion and Adrenaline Rush, giving him team support options alongside his damage.

Emmrich is the necromancer. Final Rites detonates Sundered, Entangling Spirits applies Weakened, and he also has Replenish, The Bell Tolls, and Time Slow. His kit leans toward debuff control and area denial.

Neve is the ice mage. Icebreaker detonates Sundered, and Glacial Pace applies Weakened. She also carries Time Slow and Replenish, making her a control-oriented partner for a physical or elemental damage dealer.

Building Rook Around the Team

Rook chooses one of three classes: Warrior, Mage, or Rogue. Each class has two weapon types and its own abilities that can prime or detonate effects. A Warrior can apply Overwhelm with Titan Stomp or Grappling Spear and detonate Weakened with Groundbreaker, Driving Kick, Reaper, Heroic Leap, or Blight Bane. A Mage can apply Overwhelm with Chain Lightning or Storm Surge, apply Weakened with Corrupted Ground or Ice Blast or Entropic Sphere, and detonate Sundered with Void Blade, Meteor, Spirit Bomb, or Dark Squall. A Rogue can apply Sundered with Toxic Dash or Explosive Daggers, apply Weakened with Static Strikes or Reeling Bolt, and detonate Overwhelm with Explosive Trap, Pilfer, or Storm’s Path. Each class also has three specialization areas that unlock more powerful abilities once the prerequisite nodes are filled.

The skill tree is laid out as a constellation map with node shapes that indicate what each point buys. Large circles unlock core class skills and weapon proficiencies, diamonds grant assignable abilities, medium circles add major passives or ability upgrades, small hexagons apply traits that modify class mechanics, and small circles provide minor stat boosts. This structure means even small point investments can improve a combo’s reliability, whether by extending a buff duration, adding a guaranteed critical hit on knockdown, or letting a ranged attack return blocked missiles. The progression blog confirms that a Grey Warden Rook can still take the Veil Ranger specialization if playing a Rogue. This means the class choice is the mechanical anchor, while factionfaction. An in-game group or nation players can align with or fight against, with its own goals and reputation system. and race choices shape dialogue and story interactions.

Skill points can be refunded individually or for the entire tree at no cost, so experimenting with builds carries little penalty. The largest experience gains come from quests, with smaller gains from combat and exploration, so the natural pacing rewards finishing companion quests as well as main missions.

Strong Team Compositions

Because only two companions can join Rook, most players will rotate based on enemy type, but a few compositions stand out for reliability.

Sundered burst composition. Bring a companion who applies Sundered, such as Harding with Shred or Lucanis with Debilitate, and a Rook or companion who detonates it. Bellara’s Fade Bolts, Emmrich’s Final Rites, Neve’s Icebreaker, and several Mage abilities all detonate Sundered. This composition focuses on killing one tough target quickly.

Weakened control composition. Pair a Weakened primer like Bellara’s Enfeebling Shot or Neve’s Glacial Pace with a Weakened detonator like Davrin’s Death from Above. This lowers incoming damage and is useful against heavy bruisers or bosses that hit hard enough to threaten the party.

Overwhelm stagger composition. Apply Overwhelm with Taash’s Spitfire, Davrin’s Heroic Strike, or a Warrior Rook, then detonate with Harding’s Heavy Draw, Lucanis’s Eviscerate, or a Rogue Rook. This is the strongest choice when the goal is to break an enemy’s stagger bar and open a takedown window.

Mage-Rook plus Neve and Emmrich. Two sources of ice and spirit magic create frequent Sundered and Weakened combos while keeping the battlefield controlled. This team works well for players who want to fight at range and manage cooldowns rather than parry and dodge.

Warrior-Rook plus Davrin and Taash. Two physical companions with strong stagger tools create a melee-focused front line. This team is forgiving for players who prefer to stay aggressive, since both companions can apply Overwhelm and detonate Weakened.

Equipment and Companion Progression

Gear matters alongside ability selection. The Lighthouse hub contains the Caretaker’s Workshop, where weapons, armor, and accessories can be upgraded and enchanted. Each item or ability can hold one enchantment, and the same enchantment can only be used once across the whole loadout, so choices must be spread across the party rather than stacked on one character. Duplicate items empower existing ones, so collecting repeats is not wasted.

Companions also have their own gear, skill points, and companion quests. Completing companion quests is one of the main ways they gain experience, and the relationship levels gained from those quests feed directly into stronger abilities. The progression blog notes that these bonds are not limited to romance; platonic friendships are equally important and equally rewarded.
