Elden Ring Nightreign compresses the Souls formula into repeatable three-player co-op runs called Expeditions, each ending in a unique Nightlord boss. The official starter guide from Bandai Namco is blunt that the game is “primarily balanced for cooperative multiplayer sessions with two other players,” and the entire reward roadmap — Relics, Remembrances, raid events, and Shifting Earth zones — is built around clearing those Expeditions in sequence. Here is how the structure chains together and what each layer gates.

What changed

Each Expedition runs across three in-game days. Day 1 is open farming in Limveld, ending with a mandatory Night 1 boss. Day 2 repeats the cycle with a different Night 2 boss. Day 3 is a dedicated showdown with that Expedition’s Nightlord. The Night’s Tide — a circle of blue flame — shrinks the safe area over time, herding the team toward the night boss; stray outside it and cursed rain erodes HP. Between days, defeated players can be revived by teammates attacking their near-death gauge, and a full-team wipe ends the run.

The game ships with eight Expeditions, each capped by its own Nightlord. Clearing the first Expedition, Tricephalos, unlocks six more targets; defeating any four different Nightlords — each first clear awards a Trace of Night — unlocks the eighth and final Expedition, Night Aspect. Replay is unlimited and nothing is missable, but progression is gated by first-clear rewards.

How it works

Permanent progression lives in Roundtable Hold, the hub. Three systems carry over between runs:

Relics. Defeating a Nightlord for the first time awards a special Relic unique to that Nightlord avatar. Subsequent clears of the same Expedition hand out generic, randomly generated Relics instead. Every clear — win or fail — also pays a small amount of Murk, the permanent currency spent at the Small Jar Bazaar. Relics are slotted via Relic Rites, up to three per Nightfarer on color-matched vessels, and their effects activate at the start of each Expedition.

Remembrances. Most of the story is told through per-character Remembrance quests accessed via the Journal. Chapters unlock as you collect Memory Fragments from Expeditions and from defeating Nightlords. Some chapters trigger a “personal objective” inside an Expedition — a marked target whose completion rewards unique Relics, chalices (extra vessels for Relic Rites), and a Remembrance skin. While a Remembrance is active, matchmaking restricts you to teammates without their own active objective, though direct invites bypass this.

The eight base-game Nightfarers are Wylder, Guardian, Raider, and Executor in melee roles; Ironeye as ranged; Duchess blending ranged and spells; Recluse as the spell specialist; and Revenant as a summoner. Duchess and Revenant are unlockable rather than available from the start, each requiring a specific trigger. Every Nightfarer’s Remembrance arc ends in a unique Relic and skin, and several conclude with an alternative ending cutscene triggered by a specific dialogue choice after defeating Heolstor.

Vessels and the Dresser. Vessels bought with Murk change which Relic colors a character can equip. The Dresser, unlocked after two Expedition clears, handles cosmetic garb.

Two in-run systems shape how strong you get before the Nightlord. Runes, earned from every kill and shared across the team regardless of distance, drive leveling at Sites of Grace up to a cap of level 15 per Expedition. Churches scattered on the map each add one Flask charge for the rest of the run, so routing through them is the main way to extend survivability.

The Expedition and Nightlord roadmap

The eight Expeditions and their Nightlord bosses, as named in official materials and the Everdark Sovereigns announcement, are:

  1. Tricephalos — Gladius, Beast of Night. The starter Expedition; clears it to unlock the rest.
  2. Gaping Jaw — Adel, Baron of Night.
  3. Sentient Pest — Gnoster, Wisdom of Night.
  4. Augur — Maris, Fathom of Night.
  5. Equilibrious Beast — Libra, Creature of Night.
  6. Darkdrift Knight — Fulghor, Champion of Nightglow.
  7. Fissure in the Fog — Caligo, Miasma of Night.
  8. Night Aspect — Heolstor the Nightlord. The finale; clearing it triggers the ending.

Each first clear drops that Nightlord’s signature Relic, so working through all eight in order is the fastest way to build out a Relic pool. Several Remembrance quests are explicitly gated on specific Nightlords — Ironeye’s chapter requires defeating the Darkdrift Knight (Fulghor) to claim the Edge of Order, and multiple characters’ final chapters require defeating Heolstor in the Night Aspect.

Raid events and Shifting Earth

Layered on top of the fixed Expedition structure are two families of random events that appear from your second Expedition onward.

Shifting Earth events temporarily reshape the map and reward a permanent run buff for that Expedition when completed. Four are documented: the Mountaintop (reduced frostbite buildup, with attack damage rising near frost), the Crater (a weapon upgrade to legendary), the Rotted Woods (Scarlet Rot immunity), and Noklateo, the Shrouded City (an auto-revive). Several Remembrance quests force a specific Shifting Earth to spawn — for example, Wylder’s Silver Tear objective guarantees Noklateo, and Executor’s Golden Sprout objective guarantees the Mountaintop — so you do not have to wait for RNG during those chapters.

Raids are timed intrusions by special minibosses: the Fell Omen, the Sentient Pest raid, the Augur raid, and the Equilibrious Beast raid, alongside rarer events such as the Fingercreepers swarm and meteorite impacts. Each grants a trophy-worthy reward on completion and, in some cases, a debuff if you fail or ignore it. The Fell Omen drops in near your team and flees if not killed quickly, leaving a damage-taken penalty for the rest of the run. The Sentient Pest raid spawns insects that drain a full level per hit, forcing you to chase the swarm to its moth miniboss to reclaim lost levels. The Augur raid traps you in a large bubble for a contained boss fight. The Equilibrious Beast raid cuts your max HP by 30% until the demon merchant is paid 15,000 Runes on day 1 or 35,000 on day 2 to lift the curse; only one teammate needs to pay. Raids and Shifting Earth can both be forced by restarting an Expedition until a known map layout spawns, since the game draws from a pool of preset layouts rather than truly proceduralprocedural. Generated by rules or algorithms rather than hand-placed — e.g. terrain or quests that the game builds itself. generation.

Which bosses gate which rewards

Mapping the permanent unlocks to their gating boss:

  • Any Nightlord, first clear — that Nightlord’s unique Relic plus Murk.
  • Tricephalos (Gladius) — unlocks all later Expeditions; counts toward Wylder, Raider, and Revenant Remembrance steps.
  • Darkdrift Knight (Fulghor) — Ironeye’s Edge of Order Relic; also satisfies Revenant’s first chapter.
  • Night Aspect (Heolstor) — the ending; required for Wylder, Ironeye, Recluse, and Undertaker final Remembrance chapters, each offering an alternative ending when the right dialogue choice is made.
  • Raid bosses — four distinct raid completion rewards, plus curse-lift access for the Equilibrious Beast raid.
  • Shifting Earth completions — four run-buff rewards tied to each zone.

Post-launch, Bandai Namco introduced Everdark Sovereigns — harder returning versions of existing Nightlords cycled in pairs on a rotating schedule, beginning with Gaping Jaw, Sentient Pest, and Darkdrift Knight. A further content expansion adds new Nightfarers and Expedition targets, extending the roadmap beyond the original eight.

Build path

For a clean reward arc, clear Tricephalos first to unlock the roster, then work the eight Expeditions in order so each first clear banks a unique Relic. Slot Relics at the Rites altar immediately — their effects fire from the start of every run. Interleave Remembrance chapters as Memory Fragments arrive, prioritizing any whose personal objective targets a Nightlord you are about to fight anyway, so a single clear satisfies both the Expedition and the Remembrance. Hold raid and Shifting Earth completions for moments when the shrinking circle will not punish the detour, and use the restart-until-known-layout trick to force specific events when a Remembrance or trophy demands them.
