FINAL FANTASY XIV’s sixth expansion, Evercold, is set for a January 2027 release, and it splits the game’s combat rules in two. The publisher’s own announcement calls it “an unprecedented battle system overhaul with Reborn and Evolved modes coming to the game with the launch of Evercold.” The first confirmed product of that split is the Bastion, which Square Enix describes as “a main tank that wields a pair of greatshields known as skyltborg.”

Two things announced months apart are easy to blur together here, and they answer different questions. Evolved Mode is a ruleset — a parallel version of the game’s job mechanics, not a difficulty dial. The new third raid tier is a difficulty dial. Everything below is what the official material actually states, kept separate from what it does not.

What changed: Evercold ships with two combat rulesets. Reborn Mode is “based on the current combat system and job mechanics”; Evolved Mode “offers greater emphasis on job identity.” New Evercold jobs are Evolved Mode only. Why it matters: The Bastion, the expansion’s first new job, exists only inside Evolved Mode, and a third difficulty tier is being inserted between Normal and Savage because Square Enix measures the gap at 85% versus 14–20% raid completion. Who should care: Anyone planning a day-one Evercold character — the mode you pick decides which jobs you can level at all.

What Evercold Is, Per Square Enix

Square Enix announced Evercold during the keynote at Fan Festival 2026 in Anaheim, in late April 2026. That announcement fixed the frame: a sixth expansion, a January 2027 launch, and the opening chapter of the “Godless Realms Saga” story arc, with the teaser trailer offering “a glimpse into the adventures that the Warrior of Light will experience on the Fourth.”

The Anaheim release also carried the expansion’s headline numbers. The level cap rises from 100 to 110. Two jobs are coming, listed officially as “tank and physical ranged DPS.” The content line-up names new cities, new areas, new dungeons, new trials, a new raid series, a new Ultimate raid, PvP updates, and continuing gear and crafting additions. Alongside the expansion itself, Square Enix lists further design updates, among them Seasons (“an overhaul to the way players earn rewards and improve their characters”), an Armoury Update to make multi-job play easier, and expanded character customization.

At Fan Festival 2026 in Berlin on July 25, Game Director Naoki Yoshida filled in the setting. PCGamesN’s keynote report describes much of the expansion taking place on the reflection called The Fourth, aboard giant vessels Yoshida called Realmships — “civilization’s home high above the now-frozen wastes on the planet below” — which PCGamesN reports are grouped as “The Five Firmaments” and appear to be elementally attuned. Square Enix’s own Berlin release names the first of them: “Naglfar, the Realmship of Water; Hringhorni, the Realmship of Fire; and Fargarth, a new city.”

One date outside the expansion belongs in this frame: FINAL FANTASY XIV launched on Nintendo Switch 2 on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, per Square Enix’s Berlin announcement. That landed between Patch 7.55 and Patch 7.56, the patch that the existing site coverage of the Evercold road treats as the last main-story beat before the expansion.

Evolved Mode and Reborn Mode: What Has Actually Been Said

Square Enix defined the split in two sentences at Anaheim: “Reborn Mode will be based on the current combat system and job mechanics, while Evolved Mode offers greater emphasis on job identity.” That is the entire official mechanical definition shipped so far. The same announcement carries a footnote that does the practical work: “New jobs introduced in Evercold will only be playable using Evolved mode.”

PCGamesN’s Berlin report characterises the result as a divided world rather than a settings toggle: it describes the Bastion as “a main tank in the new divided world of Evolved Mode.” That is a report of the keynote’s framing, not a Square Enix phrasing.

What no official source states is how far the two modes diverge. Whether existing jobs keep their current rotations inside Evolved Mode, what “job identity” means as a mechanic, whether the modes share a matchmaking pool, and whether swapping is free are all unaddressed in both announcements. Treat any firm claim about Evolved Mode’s systems beyond the job restriction as speculation until the additional Live Letters Square Enix has promised.

The Bastion: A Level-90 Main Tank With Dual Gunshields

The Bastion was revealed in Berlin as the first new job of the expansion. Square Enix’s summary is one line — “Bastion, a main tank wielding two greatshields known as skyltborg” — and PCGamesN’s show-floor report supplies the weapon’s behaviour: the shields “flip around on the arms to swap between a clawed melee mode and giant triple-barrelled cannons.”

That last row is backstory Yoshida gave on stage, reported by PCGamesN: the combat style “originates in the vast expanse of the Northern Empty,” where “the region of Aerslaent has long been protected by these Bastions, who have been studying the Skyltborg for generations.” Square Enix’s written release does not repeat it, so it is keynote framing rather than a formal lore statement, and PCGamesN’s account adds that Bastions can provide defensive and curative boons to the wielder and allies — a description with no numbers attached.

The exclusivity is the part with the sharpest consequence. A player who wants to level the Bastion has to be playing Evolved Mode to do it, and the second Evercold job — the physical ranged DPS Square Enix announced at Anaheim but has not yet revealed — falls under the same footnote by default.

The Third Raid Tier, and Why It Is Not Evolved Mode

Separate from the mode split, Square Enix is adding a third difficulty tier to eight-player raids, first signalled at Anaheim and expanded on in Berlin. PCGamesN reports Yoshida putting numbers on the gap the tier is meant to close: “currently 85% of all players make it through Normal raids, but just 14-20% complete Savage,” which he described as a “large difficulty and reward gap” that is intimidating to jump across.

The new tier does not have a public name yet. Its position on the ladder is what has been stated: PCGamesN reports Yoshida saying it is “roughly equivalent to, or slightly below, the level of extreme trials,” and that it will act as a “stepping stone” awarding “a new type of ‘season gear’ that provides more gradual upgrades, getting slowly closer to the level of savage rewards.” A Savage veteran can skip it entirely.

The tier applies across the expansion’s eight-player raid series. That series is the Final Fantasy VII crossover, “Beyond the Lifestream,” and PCGamesN reports it spans “all three of the difficulty modes, across the full three wings that you’d expect from a standard raid series.” For anyone sequencing the existing Normal-to-Savage ladder, the current Savage gear progression roadmap is the baseline the new middle tier is being measured against.

Everything Else Confirmed for 8.0

  • A non-linear main scenario. Square Enix describes “changes to the narrative structure that will be implemented for the main scenario, field, and game system, allowing players more freedom to choose what area they complete first between various paths.” PCGamesN’s report goes further: the introduction is the same for everyone, after which three zones can be completed in any order, dungeons included, before the paths reconverge.
  • Auto Content Balancing. Official wording: “difficulty scaling and enemy levels will adjust to the appropriate player level as they play through dungeons in their chosen order.” PCGamesN notes Yoshida limited this to “certain” missions and instances and asked players to “Trust us.”
  • Seasons on a weekly cadence. PCGamesN reports the move from daily resets to a week-based structure and a two-patch seasonal cycle, with Yoshida stating: “Again, no season passes, no additional fees.”
  • Character Action Skins. A feature letting players “assign alternate animations to personalize existing General actions, such as Teleport and Warp,” per Square Enix, with job-action skins arriving later. PCGamesN reports the split precisely — general skins in 8.0, job skins in 8.1 — and quotes Yoshida: “changing your character’s action will not affect your DPS - only your emotional DPS.”
  • Expanded character customization. Square Enix lists “a greater range of color options with the new color picker, the ability to fine-tune features such as eyes and lips, new elements such as eye shadow, and more.”
  • A Chocobo overhaul. Square Enix: “Beginning with Patch 8.1, Expansive updates to chocobo companions, including an overhaul of the chocobo raising system, as well as the ability to call forth your chocobo to assist you in dungeons.” PCGamesN adds that 8.1 allows two-player-plus-Chocobo dungeon light parties and that 8.2 reworks breeding.
  • Cross-data-centre matching. Square Enix: matchmaking “will expand across entire physical data centers rather than being limited by logical data centers, beginning with Japan in mid-October and North America and Europe to follow.” PCGamesN dates the testing start to October 12.
  • Two crossovers. The EVANGELION — Ghosts of Desire alliance raid, with animator Mahiro Maeda joining “as a special guest artist and designer,” and the FF7 raid series.

What Is Still Unconfirmed

The name of the middle raid tier is unknown. So is the mechanical definition of Evolved Mode beyond its two-sentence description, and the identity of the physical ranged DPS job. PCGamesN reports two further items explicitly hedged: a “World Raids” system the team is “cooking up,” where Yoshida noted the name is likely to change, and automatic travel to quest destinations with pathing markers, which “might not make the cut for Evercold’s launch.” Square Enix has promised additional Live Letters to cover features such as the new raid difficulty in more detail; PCGamesN quotes Yoshida joking that a session “might take four hours.”
