Hades II reached its 1.0 state in late 2025 with a settled roster of Nocturnal Arms, each carrying multiple unlockable Aspects, plus a Hex layer from Selene and the full Olympian Boon pool. This guide ranks the arms at 1.0 for high-Fear clears and pairs each tier with concrete Hex and Boon build targets.

What it covers: The Nocturnal Arms ranked at 1.0 for high-Fear consistency, with Hex and Boon targets per tier. Why it matters: Consistency at high Fear, not single-run ceiling damage, is what clears the Oath of the Unseen. Who should pick this: Players pushing Fear past their clear rate.

How this list is ranked

Tiers reflect consistency at high Fear (Oath of the Unseen), not single-run ceiling damage. The criteria, weighted roughly equally:

  • Action economy — how much damage a weapon extracts per second of player attention, and how forgiving it is during boss windows.
  • Boon coverage — how many Olympian cores (attack, special, cast, dash) the weapon can meaningfully scale, and whether it has a clean duo-Boon path.
  • Hex synergy — whether the arm charges or benefits from Selene’s Hex uptime, since Hexes cover the weapon’s weak phase.
  • Survivability — crowd-control access, mobility, and how exposed the attack animation leaves Melinoë.

Tiers run S (best-in-slot endgame) through B (viable but demanding). Every arm can clear the final bosses; tiers describe how hard you have to work for it.

Tier breakdown

S-Tier — Moonstone Axe

The Moonstone Axe trades speed for raw per-hit value and innate armor on its Ω-special, which makes it the most forgiving arm on Oath settings that strip healing. Its core loop is Special (grounded slam) into charged Attack, letting you stack a single heavy hit inside boss recovery frames. Because its base damage is high, flat-damage Boons multiply well, and its slow attack rate is a feature for on-hit effects.

  • Aspect pick: the more defensive Aspect that turns the Ω-special into a tanking window is the default endgame choice; it turns the axe into a trade weapon that outheals incoming damage via Hexes.
  • Weakness: poor against fast, multi-target swarms in Oceanus and the Fields of Mourning. Carry a crowd-control Hex to compensate.

S-Tier — Umbral Flames

The Umbral Flames are the highest sustained-DPS arm at 1.0 because their ranged fire-projectile stream scales with attack-speed and on-hit effects independently of melee risk. Their Ω-special spreads flame zones that re-proc Boons, which is why Zeus chain-lightning and Hestia burn stacks compound so hard here.

  • Aspect pick: the Aspect that extends flame lifetime or adds lingering ticks is the consistent pick; it converts a burst weapon into a zoning weapon.
  • Weakness: Magick-hungry. Without a Magick-generation Boon or the Selene card that refunds cast cost, the weapon falls into a low-DPS lull.

A-Tier — Witch’s Staff

Melinoë’s starting arm and the most well-rounded. Its Ω-special gives a ranged, dash-cancelable poke that carries Boons cleanly, and its attack chain has enough reach to play at mid-range. It lacks the axe’s burst or the flames’ DPS ceiling, but it has no bad matchup.

  • Aspect pick: the Aspect that retools the special into a larger projectile or charge release pairs with Apollo’s slow and Demeter’s Chill to lock down packs.
  • When to pick: first-timers on high Fear and any run where the Boon pool is uncommitted.

A-Tier — Argent Skull

A mobile ranged arm built around thrown bone projectiles that return. Its strength is uptime while kiting — you can keep DPS rolling during Eris and Prometheus repositioning. Its weakness is single-target concentration; it wants critical-hit scaling to compete with the axe on bosses.

  • Aspect pick: the crit-focused Aspect is the endgame pick; stack Artemis crit Boons and the Hex that adds hit-count.
  • When to pick: Surface path runs, where boss mobility punishes the axe.

B-Tier — Xinth Black Coat

The fastest melee arm and the highest mechanical-skill ceiling. Its combo string rewards frame-perfect dash-canceling and parries, and the Athena deflect line turns it into a control weapon. It lands in B only because its damage requires sustained, risky melee uptime that high-Fear modifiers punish; in skilled hands it clears everything.

  • Aspect pick: the Aspect that refunds dash or adds parry frames is what makes the weapon tolerable at Fear 30+.
  • When to pick: when the Boon draft forces Athena/Aphrodite and you want a melee option.

Hex builds (Selene)

Selene’s Hexes are large cooldown summons charged through Magick spend and Ω-cast use. They exist to cover your weapon’s downtime, so the correct Hex is the one that fills your arm’s gap, not the one with the biggest number.

  • Axe + armor-trade Hex: if you run the tanking Aspect, pick the Hex that applies a brief invulnerability or shield window so you can special into a swarm and Hex-cancel the recovery.
  • Flames + AoE Hex: pick the Hex that adds a second damage zone so your flame carpet overlaps with a Hex blast — you get double on-hit procs.
  • Skull + crit-buff Hex: pick the Hex that grants a crit or hit-count window and fire it inside your return-projectile burst.
  • Staff/Xinth + control Hex: pick a freeze or slow Hex to set up the melee combo string safely.

Hex uptime scales with the Arcana Cards in the Crossroads — specifically the cards that increase Magick regen and Hex charge rate. At high Fear, prioritize Magick-regen and Hex-charge cards over raw damage cards; a Hex you can fire twice per room outperforms one you fire once.

Boon synergies per weapon

Moonstone Axe — flat-damage stacking

  1. Attack: Hephaestus blast or Aphrodite Weak — both add large flat value to the single heavy hit.
  2. Special: Aphrodite or Athena — you want a control effect on the slam, not a DoT.
  3. Dash: Athena deflect for swarm safety.
  4. Duo target: Hephaestus + Aphrodite duo for a heavy-hit amplifier; alternatively the Aphrodite + Athena line for control-plus-damage.

Umbral Flames — on-hit procs

  1. Attack: Zeus Static — chain-lightning on every flame tick.
  2. Special: Hestia Scorch for overlapping burn zones, or Apollo for slow on the spread.
  3. Cast: anything that generates Magick — you need fuel.
  4. Duo target: Zeus + Hestia for burn-plus-chain, the highest DPS ceiling in the current patch.

Witch’s Staff — Chill lockdown

  1. Attack: Demeter Chill — stacks to freeze, covers the staff’s mid-range.
  2. Special: Apollo Slow to extend the freeze window.
  3. Dash: Athena deflect.
  4. Duo target: Demeter + Apollo for an area slow that makes the Ω-special a safe poke.

Argent Skull — crit scaling

  1. Attack: Artemis Critical on the thrown projectiles.
  2. Special: Poseidon knockback to control return timing and spacing.
  3. Cast: Artemis or a Magick-generating core.
  4. Duo target: Artemis offers no duo boons, so pair Poseidon with a duo god (such as Zeus for Killer Current) to layer extra damage onto your crits, which carries the skull toward S on the Surface path.

Xinth Black Coat — deflect combo

  1. Attack: Athena Deflect on the combo finisher.
  2. Special: Aphrodite Weak for damage and damage-reduction.
  3. Dash: Athena or Poseidon.
  4. Duo target: Athena offers no duo boons, so pair Aphrodite with a duo god (such as Hestia for Burning Desire) to layer extra control and damage — the safest way to keep the Black Coat stable at Fear 30+.

Sample endgame build: Flames + Zeus/Hestia

A concrete target for a Fear 30+ Underworld clear:

  • Weapon: Umbral Flames, lingering-tick Aspect.
  • Attack: Zeus Static core, plus the chain-jump upgrade.
  • Special: Hestia Scorch core, plus the spread upgrade.
  • Cast: Magick-regen core so the Ω-special stays affordable.
  • Hex: the overlapping AoE Hex, timed to fire during the boss’s lockout animation.
  • Arcana: Magick-refund and Hex-charge cards over raw damage.

This build’s failure mode is Magick starvation in long rooms — if you don’t roll the regen core, sell a Boon at the sell-fountain in the Crossroads for a re-roll rather than entering Chronos dry.
