Last Epoch’s crafting is the reason a single ring can carry a build from the campaign into deep Monolith content. Eleventh Hour Games rebuilt the system around Forging Potential instead of fracture chance, so every craft succeeds until the item simply runs out of room to be improved. This guide walks through how that resource works, the runes and glyphs that shape it, and the decision points that keep your best bases from going to waste.
What Forging Potential actually does
Every craftable item in Last Epoch carries a pool of Forging Potential (FP). When you apply a shardshard. A separate copy of a game world running on its own server; players on one shard don't share the world with another., rune, or glyph, the craft consumes a random slice of that pool, normally in the range of one to fifteen points. Crucially, the craft itself always succeeds — the affix you were upgrading does land. The item only becomes “uncraftable” when FP reaches zero, and the last attempted craft still applies even if it spent the remaining pool.
This matters because it removes the old fracture roulette from the equation. Instead of a hidden failure chance that compounds across repeated attempts, you watch a number tick down. The official crafting overview describes this as giving players “clearer expectations”: the point at which you can no longer craft does not arrive out of nowhere, it gets closer as the item loses potential.
Affixes themselves have seven tiers, with tier one the lowest and tier seven the highest. Per the Last Epoch support documentation, only tiers one through five can be added or raised through crafting — tier six and seven affixes must already be on the item when it drops. An item can hold up to two prefixes and two suffixes, and all affix stats are global, meaning “Increased Physical Damage” on a ring behaves the same as on a weapon’s implicit.
Shards: the building blocks
Affix shards are the raw material of directed crafting. You collect them from world drops — enemies, barrels, chests — and by destroying equipment with a Rune of Shattering, which returns some of that item’s affixes as shards. Because each shard represents a specific affix and tier, you can target exactly the stat you want rather than gambling on a random roll.
This is what the developers call “directed crafting,” and it is the system’s spine. The 0.8.4 crafting rework kept this intact while changing everything around it, because the ability to push a known stat onto a known base is what makes progression feel legible. If you need resistances for a Monolith push, you farm the relevant shards and apply them; you are not waiting on a dice roll to decide whether the stat appears.
The runes that reshape an item
Runes act directly on an item and each has a distinct strategic use. The Rune of Shattering destroys the item and returns some of its affixes as shards, which is how you replenish your supply of specific shards. The Rune of Refinement rerolls all affix values within their current tiers, useful when you have the right affixes at the right tiers but low rolls. The Rune of Removal strips a random affix and now returns shards equal to that affix’s tier, softening the blow if it removes something you wanted.
Two runes are worth particular attention for endgame gear. The Rune of Ascendance transforms an item into a random unique or set item of the same type — only the item type matters, not the subtype, so a silver ring can become any unique or set ring that can drop. The Rune of Creation removes all remaining Forging Potential and then duplicates the item, which lets you equip two copies of items like rings or one-handed swords and has further use tied to the legendary item system.
A newer utility rune, the Rune of Discovery, costs no Forging Potential and adds random tier-one affixes to every empty affix slot. It is a cheap way to round out a low-potential item or grab a handful of random upgrades in the early game.
Glyphs and the strategic decision
Glyphs support a rune or shard and modify the outcome of a craft. The rework moved the system away from pure math — which glyph extends my crafting the longest — toward genuine strategy. The Glyph of Hope gives a chance that a craft consumes no Forging Potential at all, which is where “lucky” moments come from: an item that looked spent can suddenly accept several more crafts.
The Glyph of Chaos rerolls an affix when you upgrade it. This turns rare items with one or two unwanted affixes into viable crafting bases, because you get multiple shots at converting a bad affix into one you want. It also gives every shard a use — you keep a few of each on hand so you can reroll affixes into stats you actually value.
The Glyph of Order preserves a good low-tier roll and carries it forward when you upgrade the affix, so a high roll at tier two can survive the climb to tier five. The Glyph of Despair is the chase glyph: when upgrading an affix, there is a chance the affix is sealed instead of upgraded. A sealed affix moves to its own slot and cannot be modified further, but the prefix or suffix slot it vacated is now open — this is how you craft five-affix items.
Picking the right base
Because Forging Potential is now the limiting factor, base selection changed. Rare items drop with more potential than magic items, and high-level rare items drop with even more. Exalted items — the ones carrying tier six or seven affixes you cannot craft yourself — drop with particularly high potential, because the developers wanted to shield players from bad RNG on hard-to-replace items.
The practical takeaway: start from a rare base that already has one or two affixes you want, rather than building a magic item from scratch. You will have more room to apply glyphs like Order or Chaos without running dry. If you have a tier three affix on a zero-instability base, spend your first craft pushing it to tier four before filling the other slots, since the order of operations affects how much potential each subsequent craft costs.
A progression order that holds up
For leveling, do not over-invest in items you will replace. Tier two and three affixes merged from shards are enough to reach the campaign’s end. Save your shard stock and your glyphs for the gear that will carry into Monoliths.
Once you are farming endgame bases, the loop looks like this: identify a rare base with one or two desirable affixes and high Forging Potential; use shards to add or raise the affixes you need, prioritizing the lowest tier each time so success chance stays favorable; layer Glyph of Hope when you want to stretch a craft, Glyph of Chaos when an affix is wrong but the tier is right, and Glyph of Order to lock in a strong roll. Reserve the Rune of Refinement for after the tiers are set, so you are rerolling finished items rather than mid-process ones. Keep the Rune of Ascendance and Rune of Creation for bases you can afford to gamble or duplicate.
The level requirement on an item rises as you craft, and the system will not let you complete a craft that would push the requirement past your current level — so you never equip an item and suddenly find it unequippable. There is an upper level requirement cap, so a finished item stays equippable as you continue to level.
What it means for players
The Forging Potential system is the reason Last Epoch crafting feels fair where older ARPGARPG. Action RPG — an RPG with real-time combat rather than turn-based fights. crafting did not. You can plan. You can see the resource depleting. You can choose between stretching a craft with Hope, fixing a bad affix with Chaos, or pushing for a fifth affix with Despair. None of that requires memorizing fracture thresholds or calculating compound failure odds across a dozen attempts.
For build progression specifically, this means the path to a finished item is repeatable: farm shards for the stats your build needs, apply them to a good rare base, and use glyphs to steer the outcome. The ceiling — a five-affix item with high rolls across the board — is rare and expensive, but every step toward it is a step you chose to take rather than one the system forced on you.
