Ascendance arrives in 2027, and the TGS hands-on made one thing clear: the expansion’s difficulty answer — new attack patterns on returning monsters, pack-hunting Araketa, and wound-economy combat via the Boost Bracer — assumes you arrive built. Here is what to finish in the Update 4 endgame before Master Rank resets the board.
What this covers: The Update 4 endgame checklist — Artian weapons, Transcend armor, decorations, and the systems that carry into Master Rank — plus the dated admin chores. Why it matters: Master Rank expansions historically obsolete low-rarity gear fast; the prep that pays is the stuff that crosses the rank boundary. Time to read: About 7 minutes.
The pre-Ascendance checklist
| Priority | Task | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Finish the Update 4 endgame — Gogmazios and the current pinnacle hunts | Teostra’s new moveset confirms Ascendance assumes tempered-plus skill; practice against the hardest available fights |
| 2 | Artian weapon ceiling — max your best weapon’s Artian setup | Artian upgrades are the highest-impact prep that historically carries |
| 3 | Transcend armor progression | Update 4’s armor ceiling — the last rank of defense you can bank before Master Rank |
| 4 | Build your decoration bank | The sphere economy lets you bank upgrade materials that don’t expire with rank |
| 5 | Master 2–3 weapon classes | Boost Bracer is weapon-specific — the Sword & Shield demo showed per-class boost moves, so versatility pays double |
| 6 | Decide on character edits | Vouchers go away with the Ver. 2 update (2027) — unlimited free re-edits arrive then; don’t buy vouchers after December 3, 2026 (10 free vouchers + 10 Palico vouchers distributed) |
What we know crosses the rank boundary
Capcom’s TGS reveals let you plan around three confirmed facts. First, the base-game QoL (faster weapon swap without the Seikret, equipment changes outside the tent) ships into the base game too — so current-hunt quality of life won’t get worse. Second, wound interaction matters: the Boost gauge recharges when you shatter wounds mid-boost, which means Focus Strike discipline and part-break knowledge are the transferable skill. Third, Teostra’s rework (slams that track mid-animation, dust-blast setups) signals the difficulty floor is rising — the “Wilds is too easy” era is being answered at the expansion level, not just Tempered modifiers.
The Switch 2 question
The base game hits Switch 2 on December 4, 2026 (physical pre-orders open, digital from October 19), with Ascendance confirmed for the platform too. If you’re platform-flexible, that’s the decision point: bank progress on current hardware now, or start fresh on Switch 2 two months before the expansion and catch up through the (faster, better-QoL) early game. Starting from zero after Ascendance launches is the only clearly bad option — Master Rank never assumes a fresh file.
The honest read
The classic Monster Hunter expansion playbook — farm now what won’t be obsolete — applies, with one Ascendance-specific twist: Boost Bracer changes the meta toward sustained aggression, so the weapon classes that reward uptime (the ones already strong in the current tier list) are the safest mains to over-invest in. But the honest ceiling on prep is knowledge, not gear — Artian and Transcend will be outclassed within weeks of Master Rank; your ability to read Teostra’s new slam tells won’t be. Play the hard content now, bank decorations, and let the gear reset when it resets.
