Capcom has officially revived the Onimusha franchise with Onimusha: Way of the Sword, marking the first mainline entry since Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams in 2006. Developed and published by Capcom using the RE Engine, the action-adventure title launched on September 4, 2026 across Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S. Directed by Satoru Nihei, the game is a single-player, third-person experience.
Setting & Narrative
The game follows samurai Miyamoto Musashi—modeled after actor Toshiro Mifune—through a dark fantasy interpretation of Edo-period Kyoto. The plot begins with Musashi dueling master swordsman Yoshioka Seijuro, then being ambushed and killed by supernatural creatures called Genma. Revived in Hell, a figure known as the Man in White forcibly attaches an Oni Gauntlet to Musashi’s arm and returns him to the mortal realm. The gauntlet is sentient and cannot be removed without killing its wearer. Musashi is directed to find Ono no Takamura, another gauntlet-wielder called an Onimusha, who tasks him with eliminating Genma and purifying sanctuaries. The narrative reveals that the Oni were wiped out by a Genma army led by Minamoto no Yoshitsune, the Man in White’s true identity.
Combat Mechanics
Musashi’s sword combat centers on striking, parrying, and deflecting projectiles. A prolonged parry lets players steer enemies into falls, while a guard stance blocks attacks from all directions. Depleting an opponent’s stamina enables “Break Issen,” a dismembering execution. Consecutive parries or dodges grant combat buffs. On bosses, Break Issen deals heavy damage or yields extra souls rather than executing instantly. Environmental interactions, such as flipping tables for cover, supplement the core combat.
Oni Gauntlet Systems
The gauntlet consumes three soul types from defeated enemies: yellow souls restore health, red souls purchase upgrades, and blue souls power “Oni Armaments”—special high-damage weapons. Oni Vision highlights all enemies and demons in an area. The game is largely linear with open areas and side quests available.
