Cloud Imperium Games has pushed Squadron 42, the singleplayer component of Star Citizen, from Q4 2026 to Q2 2027. Game director Chris Roberts cited the media saturation around GTA 6 as the primary factor, stating Q2 2027 “provides a better time” for the project to release.

What changed: Squadron 42 moves from Q4 2026 to Q2 2027, dodging GTA 6’s launch window. Why it matters: The singleplayer Star Citizen campaign was first planned for 2015 — now 12 years in development. Who should care: Backers and PC players still waiting for the Wing Commander spiritual successor.

Roberts argued that even though GTA 6 isn’t launching on PC in November, coverage across outlets and content creators would leave little room for other games to receive attention. “There is no way I want to launch my spiritual successor to Wing Commander… launching into the attention buzz saw of GTA 6,” he wrote in an RSI website post.

Analysis

The reasoning is plausible — GTA 6 will dominate gaming media whenever it arrives — but a delay this far into 2027 raises fair questions about whether development progress is the real driver. Roberts framed the shift as a coverage strategy, but the project’s history of missed windows and the reported state of recent Star Citizen livestreams suggest CIG may also simply need more time. Backers who have waited since 2014 are unlikely to find the GTA 6 argument fully convincing on its own.

CIG will now aim for a Q2 2027 launch, meaning the earliest realistic window is April–June 2027. Whether that date holds or joins the growing list of missed targets will depend on what CIG shows between now and then.
