Creative Assembly is taking a different structural approach with Total War: Warhammer 40,000. Instead of releasing a trilogy as the studio did with the fantasy Total War: Warhammer series, the 2027 launch will serve as a single “bedrock” release. Major updates and DLC will be built directly on top of this one game, rather than split across separate standalone titles.

A Unified Sandbox Model

Battle product owner Dave Petry confirmed the decision at Gamescom 2026, citing the success of the Immortal Empires mode — which consolidated every factionfaction. An in-game group or nation players can align with or fight against, with its own goals and reputation system. and lord from the fantasy trilogy into one massive sandbox — as a primary inspiration. Petry explained that the unified approach keeps all players in the same space rather than siphoning them off into partial experiences across multiple releases. The studio also cited internal development benefits, noting that working on the same foundation lets the team “build better together” and address shared problems continuously.

Launch Factions and Post-Launch Plans

The initial release will include four customizable factions:

  • Space Marines
  • Astra Militarum
  • Aeldari
  • Ork

That roster is notably smaller than the fantasy titles’ lineup at comparable stages, but Creative Assembly has already outlined post-launch content. Space Wolves are confirmed as an upcoming addition, with Genestealer cults and Chaos forces also planned for future updates. Additional Space Marine chapters are expected to arrive over time as well.
