A high peak-FPSframerate. How many images (frames) the game shows per second; higher = smoother motion. 60 fps is a common target. number looks excellent in a screenshot, but it does not tell you how a PC will feel during a 24-player FFXIV alliance raid or a packed World of Warcraft battleground. In those moments, the frames that arrive late are the ones that matter. A machine that averages 120 FPS can still feel rough if its 1% and 0.1% lows collapse to 30 FPS whenever mechanics, spells, and nameplates fill the screen. For MMOMMO. What changed
Both major MMORPGs have raised their hardware floors in the last few years. FINAL FANTASY XIV: Dawntrail now lists a Windows 11 64-bit minimum of an Intel Core i5-8400 or higher, 8 GB of RAM, a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 4 GB or AMD Radeon RX 480, and a 140 GB SSD. The recommended tier moves to an Intel Core i7-9700 or higher, 16 GB of RAM, and a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 6 GB or AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT. Square Enix also stresses that the latest graphics drivers are required and that 32-bit Windows is no longer supported.
World of Warcraft has moved in the same direction. Blizzard’s current support articles indicate that retail WoW requires a DirectX 12-capable GPU, an SSD with at least 128 GB of free space, and a six-core Intel Coffee Lake or AMD Zen 2-class processor as the practical minimum. The recommended tier points to eight performance cores at high boost clocks and an 8 GB DirectX 12 GPU. In both games, the days of coasting on a four-core CPU and a hard drive are over.
The official FFXIV Dawntrail benchmark adds another useful signal. Square Enix warns that benchmark scores on identical hardware may be up to 20 percent lower than the previous Endwalker benchmark because of the graphical update. That is a direct reminder that the engine is doing more work per frame, so raw average FPS from older hardware is not a reliable anchor for new content.
How it works
MMO engines are not pure GPU workloads. They have to track dozens or hundreds of actors, process network state, evaluate addons, and submit draw calls. Much of that work funnels through one or a few CPU threads. When the main thread saturates, the GPU can sit underutilized while the frame graph stutters. Independent benchmarks of WoW have repeatedly shown this pattern: average FPS may look healthy in simple outdoor zones, but 1% and 0.1% lows drop sharply in capital cities, mass combat, and raids. Player-captured frametime data on high-end hardware has shown the GPU at reduced utilization in busy encounters while CPU thread load stays pinned, producing low 0.1% lows despite healthy average FPS.
The official FFXIV benchmark reports both an average frame rate and a minimum frame rate for the same reason. A wide gap between those numbers is a warning that the system can render some frames quickly but struggles with the heaviest cuts. In live content, that gap maps directly to the stutter you feel when a tankbuster or raid-wide mechanic lines up with a frametime spike.
1% and 0.1% lows are not marketing metrics. They are averages of the slowest 1% and 0.1% of frames in a capture. If a frame takes 33 ms instead of 8.3 ms, the game effectively pauses for a quarter-second. In a GCD-based MMO, that pause can make a mechanic harder to dodge or a rotation harder to execute cleanly. Consistent frametime matters more than peak FPS because the human eye notices variance far more than it notices a slightly lower but steady number.
What it means
For a raid-focused build, the CPU should take priority over a flagship GPU. A modern six-core processor with strong single-thread performance is the realistic floor for either game, but an eight-core chip with large cache, such as a Ryzen 7 7800X3D or 9800X3D, is where the 1% lows start to stabilize in heavy FFXIV alliance content and WoW raiding. Cache size and memory latency help the main thread feed the GPU without stalling, which is why X3D-class CPUs are often recommended for CPU-bound MMOs.
Memory should be treated as part of the CPU package. Dual-channel 16 GB is the practical minimum now, and 32 GB is worth budgeting if you run Discord, a browser, streaming software, or heavy WeakAuras and addon suites alongside the game. A single 8 GB stick or mixed-speed RAM can widen the frametime gap even when the average FPS looks fine.
Storage is no longer optional. Both FFXIV and WoW list SSDs as a requirement or strong recommendation. A slow hard drive cannot stream zone assets, character models, and spell effects fast enough to keep frametimes stable during a zone change or a phase transition. A mid-range NVMe drive with 512 GB or more is the sensible target, with room left over for the operating system, cache, and patches.
The GPU still matters, but mostly for resolution and visual settings. For 1080p raiding, a mid-range DirectX 12 card with at least 6 GB of VRAMVRAM. Video RAM — memory on the graphics card used for textures and frames; more of it lets you run higher settings. is enough to stay off the GPU bottleneck in most fights. Moving to 1440p high-refresh demands more, yet even an RTX 4060 or RX 7600-class card will spend much of its time waiting on the CPU in dense raid content. Spending twice as much on a flagship GPU rarely fixes a stutter problem caused by a weak CPU or slow storage.
Balancing the whole platform is the safest path. A fast CPU paired with single-channel RAM, a cheap power supply, or a laptop-style cooling solution will still produce frametime spikes. Likewise, a powerful GPU on an older four-core processor will show pretty screenshots in empty zones and then falter in a 24-player duty. The goal is a balanced load: the CPU handles simulation and draw submission, the GPU handles pixels, and the storage and memory feed both without delay.
Settings tuning is free performance. In WoW, lowering particle density, shadow quality, and view distance first usually recovers more stable FPS than dropping resolution. In FFXIV, turning down the number of on-screen effects and limiting the frame rate to the monitor’s refresh rate can prevent the GPU from oscillating between wildly different frame times. Addons and overlays should also be audited: each extra Lua script or Discord overlay adds CPU work on the same thread that is already struggling.
Power and cooling round out the picture. A CPU that thermal-throttles mid-fight will introduce frametime spikes that look like network lag. A solid tower cooler or 240 mm AIO, a case with intake airflow, and a stable power plan keep clocks steady. Frame capping through the game or a tool like RivaTuner can also help: it gives the GPU headroom to absorb sudden load spikes instead of running flat out and then dropping off a cliff. On a variable-refresh-rate monitor, a stable cap just below the ceiling, such as 140 FPS on a 144 Hz display, keeps the panel in its smooth range without the sync-state flipping that causes micro-stutter.
