MNEURIX has covered how SNK’s live fighters spend meter — the City of the Wolves REV gauge and the KOF XV MAX Mode economy are primers for games still shipping content. Samurai Shodown — sold in Japan as SAMURAI SPIRITS — is the other case: a weapon fighter whose character line stopped years ago and whose netcode was rebuilt after launch. So this is a purchase verdict rather than a fifteenth primer, and it holds to one constraint. Every rule, date and price below comes from a page SNK or Steam actually prints. Where those pages are silent, stale or disagree, the piece says so instead of closing the gap with a number nobody published.
What this covers: a dated buyer verdict on SNK’s 2019 weapon fighter — the Rage economy as SNK’s own manual defines it, the rollback rebuild, the twelve paid fighters, and the three editions on Steam. Why it matters: the game’s content stopped in August 2021 but its netcode changed again in 2024, so advice written in either year is half wrong. The two official pages that describe it also disagree with each other, and neither has been updated. Who should care: anyone arriving from City of the Wolves or KOF XV who wants a cheap second SNK game, and anyone who has been told the fighter is “dead” without being told what actually shipped after 2021.
The verdict, in one screen
| Your situation | Buy it? | The documented reason |
|---|---|---|
| Neutral-first weapon fighter, mostly offline | Yes | Story is nine CPU matches, plus Versus, Gauntlet, Survival and Time Trial. Since Steam patch 2.32 those offline modes need no connection |
| Ranked matches against a large crowd | Qualified yes | Ranked and Casual exist, and a Ranked fight request can stay open while you sit in Training. No official page prints a population figure |
| A game that keeps growing | No | The last playable addition on SNK’s patch index is BAIKEN in Ver.2.40, dated 19 August 2021 |
| A low-end or mismatched PC | Yes, on the 2024 build | The June 2024 update decoupled game logic from framerateframerate. How many images (frames) the game shows per second; higher = smoother motion. 60 fps is a common target., so drops no longer drag button response with them |
| Long combo-route labs | No | The documented systems pay for one read, not a route. Max Rage is a state, not a combo extension |
What the Rage economy is actually paying you for
This is the part that decides whether the game suits you, and it is fully documented in SNK’s English web manual. Fighting-game vocabulary is where guides usually start inventing, so here is the manual’s own set of terms and nothing else.
| Resource | When SNK says you can use it | What it does | What it costs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rage Gauge → Max Rage | The gauge “will fill as you take damage”; full means Max Rage | Attack power up, certain special moves enhanced, Weapon Flipping Technique unlocked | Nothing. The only reward the game pays for losing health |
| Rage Explosion | Any time in a match, once per match | Attack power greatly up, enhanced specials, and both Weapon Flipping Technique and Lightning Blade unlocked | The entire gauge. Duration is longer if your life is low when you trigger it |
| Weapon Flipping Technique | At Max Rage or during Rage Explosion | Sends the opponent’s weapon flying | Ends Max Rage or Rage Explosion |
| Lightning Blade | Only during Rage Explosion | A rush attack whose damage is set by the gauge remaining | Ends Rage Explosion whether it hits or not |
| Super Special Move | Any time, once per match | Each character’s single strongest attack | A once-per-match resource unrelated to the gauge |
Three consequences follow, and they are what separates this from a fighter with a super bar.
The game pays you for being hit. The gauge is not fed by landing attacks; it fills as you take damage, so the player who is losing holds the resource.
The two big spends compete for one bar. Weapon Flipping Technique disarms and ends your powered state; Lightning Blade deals damage scaled to the gauge you have left and also ends it. Spending early on a disarm means the Lightning Blade you wanted later is unavailable, because Rage Explosion is once per match.
Whiffing Lightning Blade is not a neutral mistake, it is the whole state. The manual is explicit that “regardless of whether or not Lightning Blade lands, performing it will cause Rage Explosion to come to an end.” A once-per-match resource is gone on the input, before you know if it connected.
That does not make the game slow. It makes the expensive decision a confirmation rather than a guess, which is a different skill from route memorisation.
What it asks you to unlearn
If you arrive from a game where throws are teched and crouching blocks everything low, the manual lists a specific set of reversals to that instinct:
- Guard Break is the throw. A throw command up close, and the manual states it cannot be guarded against.
- Dodge does not beat everything. Enemy attacks can be dodged on the spot, but a Guard Break “can only be dodged during the first moment of the attack.”
- Surprise Attack is a mid. The manual describes a mid-level attack that cannot be blocked by a crouching guard — the opposite of the low you would expect to block standing.
- Counter deflects slashes. Countering certain slashing attacks deflects and knocks the opponent back, and deflecting a heavy slash can send the weapon flying.
- Blade Catch only works unarmed. Catch a slash with perfect timing while weaponless, down the opponent and disarm them.
- Just Defense leads to Stance Break, and a Sword Clash is resolved by mashing the slash buttons.
- Being unarmed is a real state. Unarmed attacks are weaker, and patch 2.40 exists partly because the command menu had to be corrected to state that Wall Jumping is performed weaponless.
The build you would actually install
The single most useful thing a 2026 buyer can know is which patch line they are getting. SNK’s product page and Steam’s news feed tell two different halves of that story, and the split is easy to misread.
| Date | What SNK published | Why a buyer cares |
|---|---|---|
| 14 August 2019 | Patch Ver.1.11 | Rage Explosion became punishable as a counter-hit. The powered state has carried real risk since year one |
| 15 June 2021 | Patch Ver.2.30 (2.31) | Adds SHIRO TOKISADA AMAKUSA, and lengthens the window to Rage Explode while being Guard Crushed |
| 9 July 2021 | Steam Patch Version 2.32 | Story, Practice, Battle, Gallery and Options became accessible without an internet connection |
| 19 August 2021 | Patch Ver.2.40 (2.41) | Adds BAIKEN and lets you adjust the Guard Crush meter in online Training. Last entry on the product page’s index |
| 9 February 2023 | “SAMURAI SHODOWN COMMUNITY BETA TEST” | SNK announces rollback netcode will be retrofitted, and that a second beta will follow |
| 12 June 2023 and 15 December 2023 | Two announcements, identical text: Steam “now officially has rollback netcode” | The feed never explains why the same announcement appears twice, six months apart |
| 13 October 2023 | “The Final Community Beta Test is live” | References a “recent release date delay” and lists beta bugs, including unskippable character intros |
| 4 June 2024 | “ROLLBACK MAJOR UPDATE” | Intro skip, plus game logic and framerate decoupled so FPS drops no longer slow button response |
| 21 June 2024 | Follow-up patch | Time-out problems, further desync reduction, weapon-flip issues |
| 9 August 2024 | Last item in the feed | Team Battle VS corrections to life bar, rage gauge and rage burst, plus a spectator desync fix |
Read that table top to bottom and the shape of the product is clear. The balance and character line ends in 2021. The online layer is rebuilt in public across 2023 and patched for a further year. The most recent documented change is a Team Battle fix from August 2024, which calls the state “rage burst” where the manual says Rage Explosion. The 2023 beta notes use “Rage Burst” too, so SNK’s own English naming is not consistent.
What stopped growing, and when
Twelve paid characters are listed on the Steam page: RIMURURU, BASARA, KAZUKI KAZAMA, WAN-FU, MINA MAJIKINA, SOGETSU KAZAMA, IROHA, WARDEN, CHAM CHAM, HIBIKI TAKANE, SHIRO TOKISADA AMAKUSA and BAIKEN. The last of those arrives in the 2.40 notes, dated 19 August 2021.
That date is the dividing line. SNK’s product page lists patch notes from Ver.1.11 onwards and stops at 2.40. SNK’s English press index, checked the same day, carries no Samurai Shodown item anywhere in its 2026 listing. And between the Steam feed’s oldest entry (Patch Version 2.32, 9 July 2021) and its newest (9 August 2024), there is no announcement of a new playable fighter.
So the honest description is neither “abandoned” nor “supported”. The roster closed in 2021 and the netcode kept receiving fixes into 2024. The offline product you buy today is the 2021 one; the online product is the 2024 one.
The single-player side of that 2021 product is larger than its reputation suggests. Story is nine matches, and Gallery movies, artwork and sound unlock by completing it. Battle offers Versus, Gauntlet, Survival and Time Trial. Dojo is an “asynchronous online play mode” where you fight Ghost data — profiles the game trains from play, uploadable once a Ghost has learned enough actions and you have played at least one online Ranked Match. The Database page caps you at 100 saved Ghosts.
Which edition to buy
Steam sells the game three ways. The fetched prices rendered in rand because the store geolocated the request to South Africa, so treat the ratio between tiers as the durable part and the currency as incidental.
| Bundle | Items | Contents | Price at fetch |
|---|---|---|---|
| STEAM EDITION | 5 | Base game plus RIMURURU, BASARA, KAZUKI KAZAMA, WAN-FU | R 477.00, 33% off at R 319.59 |
| DELUXE PACK | 9 | The above plus MINA MAJIKINA, SOGETSU KAZAMA, IROHA, WARDEN | R 685.00, 34% off at R 452.10 |
| KIWAMI PACK | 13 | The above plus CHAM CHAM, HIBIKI TAKANE, SHIRO TOKISADA AMAKUSA, BAIKEN | R 893.00, 35% off at R 580.45 |
Two details from the same fetch matter more than the prices. Four of the twelve DLC entries — RIMURURU, BASARA, KAZUKI KAZAMA and WAN-FU — carried no individual price at all and appear only inside bundles, so wanting one of those four specifically means buying a bundle. The other eight were listed at R 52.00 each, with the store’s own “add all DLC” total at R 416.00.
So the Deluxe tier is the cheapest route to eight of the twelve characters. Kiwami is the only bundle carrying all twelve, and the only route to BAIKEN, the last character the game received. If the roster is why you are buying, buy Kiwami. If you want to test the Rage economy first, the entry bundle is base game plus four characters.
What the official pages do not tell you
These are the questions the fetched pages leave open.
- How many people are playing. No official page prints a concurrent-player figure. The only recency signal on the store page is a review count — 17 reviews in the last 30 days, 88% positive, against 1,707 all-time at 81%. That is a proxy for interest, not a queue length.
- A native PlayStation 5 version. SNK’s product line lists PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Stadia, Nintendo Switch, Epic Games Store, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. There is no PS5 entry and no statement about the PS4 version running on PS5, so treat compatibility as unconfirmed.
- Gauge fill rates and frame windows. The manual states the rules of Max Rage, Rage Explosion and Lightning Blade but prints no numbers for fill speed or duration. This article therefore prints none.
- Whether intro skip already existed. Patch Ver.1.11, dated 14 August 2019, says “Character intros and win poses are now skippable.” The 4 June 2024 major update announces “the long-awaited intro skip.” Both are SNK’s words. The 2023 beta notes list “Unskippable character intros” as a known bug, so the likeliest reading is that 2024 restored a 2019 feature after the netcode rebuild — but that is inference, not documentation.
- How long the series had been away. SNK’s own product page says “11 years have passed since the last series installment.” The Steam store copy of the same description says “Ten years have passed.” Both were fetched on the same day. The series is not in doubt; the arithmetic on SNK’s two pages is.
- Whether the manual matches the current build. The English web manual is written for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One and has no page covering rollback, the framerate decoupling or the 2024 patches; its Team VS section predates them. It is still the only official English source for the Rage rules, which is why the rules above come from it while the dates come from Steam.
So is it worth buying
Yes, for a specific buyer: someone who wants a weapon fighter where one confirmed read decides a round, who will play Story, Versus, Gauntlet and Dojo against Ghost data, and who values a finished, documented system over a growing one. The Rage economy rewards losing, the disarm and the kill shot compete for one bar, and the powered state has been punishable since 2019.
No, for the buyer who wants a growing roster, a measured ladder population, or combo routes to lab. The character line closed in August 2021, no official page will say how busy the queue is, and the systems pay for the single exchange rather than the sequence.
The reasonable middle is the entry bundle, a week in Dojo and Training — where the manual confirms you can set both players’ Rage Gauges and toggle a Rage Gauge Revive — and a roster decision afterwards.
