Terraria’s boss list reads like a fight order. It is really a gear checklist with a boss bolted to the end of each step: almost every fight in the chain exists to unlock the material that makes the next one survivable, and the fights that do not do that are the ones you can drop without slowing down. This guide walks the chain in the order the Official Terraria Wiki presents it, pairs each step with the armour tier the wiki’s walkthrough and class guides expect you to have before you pull the summon, and marks which fights gate progression and which are optional loot stops.
What this covers: the full Terraria boss order from King Slime to the Moon Lord, with the summon item, the gear gate and the skippable fights for each step. Why it matters: 1.4.5.0 (“Bigger and Boulder”, January 27, 2026) and its hotfixes through 1.4.5.8 changed enough boss behaviour and armour behaviour that routes learned on 1.4.4 waste time and, in a few places, no longer work. Who should care: anyone starting a fresh world, and anyone whose boss order predates 1.4.5.
The version this route is written against
The wiki’s desktop version list runs from 1.0 to 1.4.5.8, and the 1.4.5.8 page dates that hotfix to August 23, 2026. So the answer to “has anything shipped since 1.4.4” is yes: a full feature update, 1.4.5.0, released January 27, 2026, plus a hotfix line on top of it. The game ships on Windows, macOS and SteamOS/Linux per its Steam listing, and all three desktop builds share one update path.
Several 1.4.5.0 changes touch this route directly, and the wiki’s own boss page history flags the boss-facing ones:
- Pylons work during boss fights and invasions. Teleporting home mid-attempt is now an option rather than a wipe.
- Shimmer invincibility no longer applies to bosses, invasion enemies or the Torch God. The panic-button dodge is gone for the fights that matter.
- King Slime and Queen Slime can teleport to platforms, so arena designs that relied on a raised platform gap are less safe.
- Skeletron and Skeletron Prime can no longer be dodged by accessories when enraged during the day. Oversleeping the sunrise is now lethal instead of avoidable.
- Eye of Cthulhu drops Unholy Arrows on Crimson worlds, and Deerclops’ legs can now be dashed through with a Shield of Cthulhu or the Solar Flare armour set.
- A
/bossdamagechat command reports how much damage each player dealt in a fight.
Two of those are worth internalising before you plan attempts: the Pylon line changes the cost of failure, and the Shimmer line removes an exploit that had become routine.
Pre-Hardmode order and gear gates
The wiki counts 33 bosses in total: 8 pre-Hardmode, 10 Hardmode, 14 event bosses and one special world-seed boss. Only 7 of the 8 pre-Hardmode bosses can appear in a single world, because the Eater of Worlds is Corruption-only and the Brain of Cthulhu is Crimson-only.
| # | Boss | Summon | Gear gate before you start | Gates progression? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | King Slime | Slime Crown, or 150 slimes killed during Slime Rain (75 if already beaten) | Platinum or Gold armour; any piercing weapon | No |
| 2 | Eye of Cthulhu | Suspicious Looking Eye, or a 1/3 nightly chance once a player has 200 HP and 10+ defence with 3 NPCs housed | Platinum or Gold armour; class sets start here (Fossil for ranged, Jungle for magic) | No, but pays ore |
| 3 | Eater of Worlds | Worm Food, or every third Shadow Orb broken (Corruption only) | Silver or Tungsten armour or better, per the walkthrough | Yes, on Corruption worlds |
| 4 | Brain of Cthulhu | Bloody Spine, or every third Crimson Heart broken (Crimson only) | Silver or Tungsten armour or better | Yes, on Crimson worlds |
| 5 | Queen Bee | Abeemination, or destroy a Larva inside a Bee Hive | Molten (melee), Shadow or Crimson (ranged), Obsidian or Bee (summoner) | No |
| 6 | Skeletron | Activate the Old Man’s curse at the Dungeon at night | Molten armour is the listed best; 400 HP recommended | Yes, opens the Dungeon |
| 7 | Wall of Flesh | Throw a Guide Voodoo Doll into Underworld lava while the Guide lives | Full class set: Molten / Necro / Jungle or Meteor / Bee or Obsidian | Yes, starts Hardmode |
Three of those gates are worth spelling out, because they are where new players stall.
The Eye of Cthulhu is not optional by choice so much as by schedule: once one player has 200 health and more than 10 defence and three NPCs are housed, it has a 1/3 chance to spawn at the start of every night until you kill it once.
Skeletron is the real pre-Hardmode wall. The head alone carries 4,400 health, and the walkthrough calls it one of the most difficult pre-Hardmode bosses, generally fought after Queen Bee. Miss the night deadline and it gains a massive amount of defence and spins at high speed for damage that usually kills in one hit — and since 1.4.5.0 that enrage can no longer be dodged with accessories. Kill it and Dungeon Guardians stop spawning, which puts Necro armour and the Dungeon’s weapons within reach before the Wall of Flesh.
The Wall of Flesh cannot be fled. Summoning it applies the Horrified debuff, which blocks running away and kills you outright if you teleport, and the boss must die before it reaches the end of the map. It always drops the Pwnhammer, and that hammer is the only key to Hardmode ore, because breaking Altars requires a Pwnhammer or better.
Hardmode order and gear gates
Everything past the Wall of Flesh is gated on ore, souls and one dungeon door, and the ore gate is the one that sets the pace.
| # | Boss | Summon | Gear gate before you start | Gates progression? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | Queen Slime | Gelatin Crystal, found in the Underground Hallow | Early-Hardmode set; Spider armour plus Spider Staff for summoners | No |
| 9 | The Destroyer | Mechanical Worm, at night | Adamantite, Titanium or Frost pieces; the walkthrough calls it arguably the easiest of the three | Yes, one of three |
| 10 | Skeletron Prime | Mechanical Skull, at night | Same bracket, upgraded with Hallowed Bars as they drop | Yes, one of three |
| 11 | The Twins | Mechanical Eye, at night | Same bracket; kill Spazmatism first, per the walkthrough | Yes, one of three |
| 12 | Plantera | Destroy a Plantera’s Bulb in the Underground Jungle | Chlorophyte or Hallowed; Turtle armour for melee | Yes |
| 13 | Golem | Lihzahrd Power Cell at the Lihzahrd Altar in the Jungle Temple | Shroomite, Spectre, Tiki or Beetle, depending on class | Yes |
| 14 | Duke Fishron | Fish in the Ocean with a Truffle Worm | Available at the start of Hardmode, but the wiki says it takes post-Golem gear | No |
| 15 | Empress of Light | Kill a Prismatic Lacewing in the Hallow, after Plantera | Available post-Plantera, but the wiki says post-Golem gear in practice | No |
| 16 | Lunatic Cultist | Kill the four cultists at the Dungeon entrance | Valhalla Knight, Beetle, Shroomite or Spectre tier | Yes |
| 17 | Moon Lord | Celestial Sigil, or destroy all four Celestial Pillars | Endgame Luminite-tier sets come after | Yes, final |
The three mechanical bosses are one gate, not three. Each is summoned with an item that is crafted or dropped, each must be fought at night, and once a world is in Hardmode with at least one Altar destroyed there is a 10% chance every night that one of them spawns on its own if it has not been killed yet. The wiki’s hardmode walkthrough orders them Destroyer first for melee and ranged, because its souls feed the Light Disc and the Megashark, then either of the other two, with the Twins last.
Which summons you can skip
Six fights can be dropped without blocking the chain, and the wiki is explicit about most of them:
- King Slime. The walkthrough calls it “an entirely optional but fun boss: none of its drops are necessary for game advancement.” It still hands out the Slime Hook, Ninja armour for critical-hit bonuses, and the Slimy Saddle mount.
- Queen Bee. The boss page says that beyond unlocking the Witch Doctor, “she does not advance the game in a major sense.” She is the only source of Bee Wax, and the Beenade she drops is singled out as effective against the Wall of Flesh.
- Deerclops. It sits outside the chain entirely, and its reason to exist is the Houndius Shootius — the first sentry a player can get.
- Queen Slime. “An entirely optional boss: none of its drops are necessary for game advancement.” Her Crystal Assassin set is the only set that boosts all damage types.
- Duke Fishron. “Defeating Duke Fishron does not unlock any new events or other aspects required for game progression” — the payoff is loot, not access.
- Empress of Light. An optional fight that changes nothing in the world; she is enraged with greatly increased damage during the day.
The 14 event bosses — Pumpkin Moon, Frost Moon, Martian Madness, Old One’s Army, Pirate Invasion and the rest — are side content by the same logic, and Mechdusa only exists on a special world seed. Skipping any of this costs you gear, not access.
The Hardmode transition rules that actually bind
Hardmode is not a difficulty toggle; it is a state the world enters permanently on the first Wall of Flesh kill. Two diagonal stripes generate in a V from the top of the world to the bottom of the Underworld, one converting tiles to Hallow and the other to the world’s evil biome, and the “ancient spirits of light and dark” message fires once the conversion is done.
From there the chain is mechanical:
- Altars set the ore ladder. The first Altar destroyed spawns Cobalt or Palladium, the second Mythril or Orichalcum, the third Adamantite or Titanium, and the pattern repeats. Returns diminish hard: reproducing the first three altars’ worth of ore needs nine more (12 total), then 21 more (33 total).
- Pickaxes set the floor. Cobalt and Palladium need at least a Molten Pickaxe. Mythril and Orichalcum need a Cobalt or Palladium drill or pickaxe. Adamantite and Titanium need a Mythril or Orichalcum drill or pickaxe. Chlorophyte needs the Drax or Pickaxe Axe.
- Any one mechanical boss opens Life Fruit, which grows in the Underground Jungle and grants 5 max life per use up to 500 HP.
- All three mechanical bosses open Plantera. The “The jungle grows restless…” message confirms it, and the Drax and Pickaxe Axe that make Chlorophyte minable both need Hallowed Bars plus one soul from each mechanical boss — so Chlorophyte is effectively locked until the trio is down.
- Plantera opens the Temple. She always drops the Temple Key, the Dungeon starts spawning its Hardmode enemies, and biome spread slows to half speed.
- Golem plus Skeletron opens the cultists. The four cultists appear at the Dungeon entrance only once both are dead, and killing them starts the Lunar Events.
Class breakpoints once Hardmode begins
The pre-Hardmode sets are broad — Platinum, Molten, Necro, Jungle, Bee. Hardmode splits them, and that split is where route planning stops being about boss order and starts being about which set your class can actually reach. It is the same gear-gate logic that drives Valheim’s Deep North progression: the biome does not check your level, it checks your equipment.
| Class | First Hardmode set | Mechanical-boss era | Post-Plantera target |
|---|---|---|---|
| Melee | Adamantite Helmet, Frost Breastplate, Mythril Greaves; Titanium Mask and Adamantite Leggings for the defensive variant | Hallowed armour for the dodge, or Chlorophyte for raw stats | Turtle armour from Turtle Shells plus Chlorophyte; Beetle Scale Mail for offence, Beetle Shell for defence |
| Ranged | Adamantite Mask, Frost Breastplate, Mythril Greaves; full Frost armour as the defensive option | Hallowed, then the Shroomite headpiece that matches your weapon type | Shroomite armour — its helmet bonus is 12% in 1.4.5.0 and now applies to ammo as well as weapons |
| Magic | Adamantite Headgear, Adamantite Breastplate, Forbidden Treads | Hallowed Helmet or Chlorophyte Headgear | Spectre armour: Mask for offence, Hood for healing — the class guide notes crits turn the set bonus’s 400 DPS into 800 |
| Summoner | Spider armour plus the Spider Staff, farmed from Black Recluses before you go ore hunting | Hallowed Hood or Chlorophyte Visor; Forbidden Robes with Spider Greaves as the hybrid | Tiki armour |
Two 1.4.5.0 changes land squarely on this table. Spider armour now requires a Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil to craft, so the summoner shortcut is not available on the first day of Hardmode. And all summon weapons lost their mana costs while gaining new summon modifiers, with whip tags no longer stacking, which reshuffles which hybrid pieces are worth wearing.
Sequencing notes that save attempts
Three practical points fall out of the sourcing above rather than out of opinion. Since 1.4.5.0 Pylons work inside boss fights, so a pylon pair near the arena is worth more than a long walk home. Shimmer no longer grants invincibility against bosses, so the arena’s vertical space has to do the work the exploit used to. And the wiki lists Deerclops as becoming invincible once the player is more than 30 blocks away, which is a fight you lose by kiting rather than by dying.
For the mechanical trio, the walkthrough’s advice is to lead Skeletron Prime in one direction or circle him rather than try to outrun him, to treat the Prime Laser as the priority limb, and to fly up or down through the Twins’ charges rather than sideways — advice that does not survive a fight started at 4:00 AM with a sunrise enrage pending.
